Pirate Skipper Romans Nearing Milestones

RomansCharlestown Pirate Baseball’s Head Coach Ricky Romans is a stickler for details, and has proven time after time that its the details that take you places in the long run.  Coach Romans took the Charlestown helm in 2004, and a situation where the Pirates hadn’t won more than nine games in each of its prior four seasons.  It took Romans just one season to return the Pirates back to winning form, of which he has steadily improved on ever since.  Romans holds everyone around his program to a higher level than the local average, and its made Pirate Nation a better and highly respected local baseball hub as a result.  Romans pits the Pirates against the toughest competition around for a reason, the details.  The 11th ranked Pirates are in the midst of another successful season, Mid-Southern Conference Champions, and 16-5 record going into tonights (Wednesday) non-conference match-up versus Lanesville.  What the Lanesville game isn’t about, if you ask Coach Romans, is milestones his personal coaching record is on the brink of accomplishing.  Coach Romans will correct you with what his program’s obvious main objectives currently are this season.  Pirate Baseball Head Coach Ricky Romans, in his 12th season at Charlestown, has 198 wins and only 121 losses.  Coach Romans is obviously two wins away from a 200 win coaching milestone at Charlestown; but also one win away from passing former Coach Mike Hall as the winningest Pirate Baseball Coach in Charlestown history.  Good luck to the Pirates as they travel to Lanesville tonight, Saturday as they compete in the Benton Central Invitational, and next week versus New Albany and Sectional #30 play; but also THANK YOU COACH ROMANS for taking care of the details moving the Pirate Baseball program up and ahead of the average.

Lady Pirates’ Bottom Seven Rally Forces Salem to Share

2015SoftballMSCchampsThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team (18-4 & 7-2 MSC) began Tuesday evening’s showdown with conference leader Salem eight days ago.  The game rain delayed in the bottom of the fourth last Monday, with the difference being a Lady Lion solo home run in the third.  Eight days the weight of the match-up loomed, especially with the Lady Pirates who have experienced the recent Softball and Basketball showdowns between the two groups of competitors.  Charlestown and Salem resumed the game Tuesday evening, the Lady Lions with a 1-0 lead and two away in the bottom of the fourth for the Lady Pirates.  Charlestown continued to make adjustments for Salem’s pitcher, Brooke Miller; who continued to deliver a hard-to-hit-solid ball.  Two singles and two errors in the top of the fifth allowed Salem to balloon its lead to 4-0 heading into the fifth inning.  Cline doubled in the sixth, but Charlestown was unable to plate any runs through six complete; however Lady Pirate Pitcher Carly Price zeroed in on what was working and held Salem at bay in the sixth and seventh.  Price pitched the complete game, striking out five and walking one Lady Lion.  The bottom of the seventh, seemingly the Lady Pirates’ last chance at a share of the 2015 softball conference title was real; but it wasn’t written on anyone’s face.  Senior Kaitlynn Henning led off with a single, then Sophomore Mackenzie Smith (who finished the game four for four at the plate) singled to move Henning into scoring position at third.  Then it was the flip of a switch…. somewhere in the Charlestown dug-out.  Junior Leah Sherrill singled and scored Henning to cut the lead to three with two on base and no outs.  Juniors Carly Price and Lexi Logsdon hit back-to-back stand-up triples to plate three more runs and tie the score at four.  Logsdon, representing the winning run on third, awaited to be plated for the walk-off victory.  Salem (15-8 & 7-2 MSC) elected to make a pitching change (Kilburn); but it wasn’t enough to stop the Lady Pirate momentum.  Two batters later, with one away, Sophomore Kendall Cline smacked a shot to third base scoring Logsdon for the win.  Logsdon got a great jump off third and slid under the tag at home for one of the most aggressive steals of her career.  Charlestown’s 5-4 win forced Salem to share the Softball Conference Championship, the Lady Pirates second since 2012 and fifth all time (1996, 1997, & 1998).  Mackenzie Smith was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game by CPPSB.  Charlestown has won fourteen straight when it visits Henryville (4:30 pm first pitch) on Wednesday.  Henryville is ranked third in 2A ball with a record of 24-3; which promises to be a good competitive game in advance of next week’s Sectional.  The Lady Pirates will also host Southwestern Thursday night and Brown County on Friday night for Senior Night and recognition of retiring coach Zollman.

Pirates Draw the Dragon Rematch in Sectional Opener

Charlestown Pirate Baseball learned its necessary path to a 2015 Class 3A Sectional 30 title, and that includes an opener versus their rival Dragons.  Sectional 30 will be hosted by North Harrison High School, scheduled for Wednesday, May 27th through Monday, June 1st.  Game #1 pits Silver Creek vs. Charlestown, Game #2 pits Brownstown Central vs. Corydon Central; both games scheduled for Wednesday evening May 27th.  The bottom half of the brackets include a Thursday Game #3 match-up between North Harrison and Madison; and (Game #4) Scottsburg and Salem.  Wednesday’s winners and Thursday’s winners will match-up on Friday evening for the Sectional Semi-Finals.  The Sectional Championship is scheduled for Monday, June 1st at 6:30 pm.  The Pirates dropped the regular season showdown with Silver Creek 4-0, earlier in the month with an uncharacteristic performance at Creek.  All Pirate Baseball Post Season games will be broadcasted live by Pirate Pride Sports at www.CPPSB.com.

Pirate Golf Make Two Trips to Wooded View

The Charlestown Pirate Golf team competed in the Mid-Southern Conference Tournament this past Saturday; at Wooded View Golf Course, in very rainy conditions.  Despite the rough weather conditions, all team members shot a lower 18 hole total than they did at the Wooded View Invitational played back in April.  Miles Matthews carded a 97, followed by Kyle Jackson and Brady Christman who both shot 103.

The team returned to Wooded View last night for a match against Jeffersonville and Clarksville.  Matthews once again led the way and tied his season low score of 43.  Kyle Jackson came in with a 49 and Brady Christman finished with a 51.

Pirates Pounce Lions 13-5, Earn First MSC Title Since 87

The Charlestown Pirate Baseball team improved to 16-5 & 8-1 MSC Monday evening at Salem, handily defeating the host Lions on their Senior Night, 13-5.  The win also gave the Pirate program its third Mid-Southern Conference Baseball Title, and first since 1987.  “I’m very proud of our entire team and coaching staff today.  Our guys have worked extremely hard all year and it’s great to see their hard work pay off”. commented Pirate Head Coach Ricky Romans regarding the win.  Charlestown will celebrate Senior Night festivities Tuesday evening at CHS, hosting Seymour.  The Pirates scored five in the first, three in the second, and three in the seventh….after a couple of runs in between to keep Salem at bay all evening.  Charlestown scored their thirteen runs off fourteen hits and while committing only two errors.  Kelly Rider stayed undefeated on the mound (6-0), getting the win.  Rider also had a solid night from the plate, hitting a home run, and batting in four runs.  Additionally, Ryan Jones finished 2-4, with 2 Runs, Dewey Cardwell finished 2-3, with 2 Runs, and 2 RBI’s, Drew Reich recorded hits 3-5 from the plate, including a double, a triple and two RBI’s.  Senior Jason Houchens also added a double while getting two hits off four trips to the plate.  The win is the Pirates’ 11th out of the last 13 outing.  The Pirates will learn their Sectional draw Tuesday morning, which will be announced by the IHSAA shortly after 10 am Tuesday.  The Sectional pairings will be announced by CPPSB via Twitter as soon as they are announced.  The Pirates will travel to Lanesville Wednesday and will participate in the Benton Central Invitational Saturday.
