Delaney Signs Intent to Attend Hanover

Charlestown High School Senior Track & Field standout Steven Delaney gathered with family, friends and school officials Wednesday to sign his intent to attend and run track at Hanover College.  Delaney will soon leave his high school career, but one which has continually left a mark in not only the Charlestown High School athletic recordbook, but also its academic recordbooks.  Delaney has already earn two years of college credits through Ivy Tech; but will also graduate at this year’s valedictorian.  Delaney has been the Pirate hurdle king of CHS for several years, holding the school record in both the 110m hurdle event (14.70) and the 300m hurdle event (39.38); a record he has improved on at twice during his high school career.  Delaney looks to improve on that beginning this week during the IHSAA Boys Sectional.  Delaney is the current MSC and Jeffersonville Sectional 300 meter hurdle defending Champion.

Joining Steven for his signing event are CHS Track Coaches David Daniel (seated left) and Jerry Doyle (seated right of Delaney); and Charlestown High School Athletic Director Chad Gilbert, seated far right.  Parents Allen and Desiree Holz (standing from the left), friends Trey Woodward and Andrew Shaw (standing center), and parents James and Kristy Delaney.

When asked what advice he would give to young runners following him who want to run in college; Delaney stated “find ways to be competitive and always work hard to never be satisfied with results”.

Lady Pirate Vincent Signs with Saint Mary of the Woods

Charlestown High School Lady Pirate Volleyball Senior Hannah Vincent recently gathered with family and school administrators to officially announce and sign to attend and play volleyball at Saint Mary of the Woods College in West Terre Haute, Indiana.  When asked about her decision, Hannah spoke highly of their nursing program, which is her career interest; and stated that the “campus is beautiful”.  When asked, Hannah provided the following advice for student athletes entering high school:  “Work hard on the court, but harder in the classroom to help open opportunities that keep up with your (athletic) skills.  Hannah is a four year varsity letter player who finished her Senior year of play with 259 digs and 29 aces before participating in the Indiana Elite North vs. South All-Star Game last November.  Hannah also is a National Honor Society member and will graduate with Academic Honors and an Associates Degree when finished with high school in the spring.  Hannah, seated front and center with parents (left to right) Jennie Vincent, Jeremy Vincent and Elizabeth East, was joined by Saint Mary of the Woods Volleyball Coach Stephen Beeler, Charlestown HS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert, and Charlestown HS Volleyball Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Coach Beeler stated that Hannah’s personality is “perfect for our program, as we have a very close-knit team”.  “She’s got a great work ethic….I see more potential, and think I can help her reach her potential” (at Saint Mary of the Woods).  Charlestown HS Volleyball Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll, who has coached Hannah throughout high school, stated: “Hannah has worked hard to improve over the past four years, as her serving was a real asset to our (CHS) program. Saint Mary of the Woods is great for up and coming high school program athletes, as it gives more players the opportunity to take on the next level of competition; and I definitely think Hannah is up to that task, as a college freshman.  Congratulations to Hannah Vincent, who plans on beginning her college journey at Saint Mary of the Woods this fall; and thank you for your hard work and outstanding representation of Pirate Nation.

Lady Pirates Win 19th Holiday Tourney Title

The Charlestown Lady Pirates (10-3) surged in the second half, courtesy of the charity stripe; to outlast the Providence Pioneers 40-36 and earn the program’s 19th Holiday Tourney Title.  The Lady Pirates played nip and tuck with the Pioneers (6-6) to a 17-17 tie at the break.  Charlestown surged near the end of the third to outscore Providence 13-8 before slowing things down in the fourth.  Charlestown built a five point lead with four minutes remaining, but turnovers allowed the Pioneers to fight back to within one with less than two minutes on the clock.  Providence was forced into fouling late; however solid free throw shooting by Erin Kimbrell and Samantha Matthews sealed the deal for the Lady Pirates.  Charlestown scored its final ten points of the game from the charity stripe.  Matthews finished the game a little under the weather and scoring 17 points after scoring 22 the night before against Clarksville.  Jackie Biscardi added 12 points on four treys; while Bri Harvey finished with five and Kimbrell four.

Samantha Matthews, who scored nearly 40 points during the tourney, was named the annual Butch Troutman Tourney MVP, while Bri Harvey and Jackie Biscardi were named to the all-tourney team.  “It’s a good win because a game we had to fight through and really earn it against a quality opponent,” Head Coach Scott Matthews said, “and we showed we can be resilient in tough spots and make plays to come out on the winning side.”
