Charlestown Athletic Director Elected to IHSAA Board

Charlestown High School Athletic Director Chad Gilbert was recently elected to the IHSAA Board of Directors Southern District Urban Seat.  As part of the Executive Committee, Gilbert will take the place of Paul Neidig who was selected to become an Assistant Commissioner of the IHSAA earlier this year. In his fifth season as the Pirates’ Athletic Director, Gilbert has pioneered the development of new coaches and created a winning atmosphere inside the Athletic Department. While speaking about his recent election win, Gilbert commented, “I look forward to serving the student athletes in our state as a member of the IHSAA Board of Directors. I hope to find being a part of this Association fulfilling and ultimately one of the highlights of my career. I want to represent our entire district in a positive way.” Gilbert will take his seat on the board at the IHSAA Executive Meeting on January 11th, 2018.

Pirates Use Charity Stripe to Get Past Scottsburg

The Pirates improved to 2-2 (1-1 MSC) on the young season Friday evening after out lasting conference foe Scottsburg in a tight-throughout contest Friday evening in the Arena.  Charlestown led 12-9 after one period complete, but trailed 21-20 at the break as the Pirates equalized the visiting Warriors by making 19-22 at the free throw line.  Charlestown led 30-29 after three before posting a 46-42 final score.  The Pirates were led in scoring  by Junior Courtland Black, who finished the game with 18 points.  Sophomore Bo Braunecker continued to prove his varsity scoring abilities finishing the game with a dozen.  Junior Brady Latham and Freshman Ty Crace each added six respectively for the winning cause.  “Kids made plays when we needed them.  (I’m) proud of the way we finished the game”, commented Pirate Head Coach Jason Connell after the game.  The evening Junior Varsity opener went to Scottsburg 47-45.

The Pirates will join the Lady Pirates Tuesday December 5th at Henryville’s Furnish Gym for a varsity double header; varsity girls will tip at 6:00 pm and boys at approximately 7:15 pm.  The Pirate Network WPMQ 99.3 FM is scheduled to broadcast Tuesday’s Pirate and Lady Pirate Varsity double header, live from Henryville High School.  Both Boys and Girls Junior Varsity match ups with Henryville will be played the following evening (Wednesday) at the CHS Sports Arena.

Charlestown Sweeps Mustangs in Basketball Double Header

The Charlestown Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball teams squared up Wednesday evening in James Matthews Gymnasium for some old fashioned and neighborly rivalry double header basketball action.

The Lady Pirates improved to 4-2 on the young season by thrashing the Lady Mustangs 78-29; and led by Jacqueline Biscardi’s 20 game point high, including four treys.  Not that Charlestown didn’t book balanced scoring, Samantha Matthews added 18 and Karston Watson another 17 as their offensive performances continue to excel.  Gabbie Gagnon knocked down three three-pointers to accumulate all her scoring on the evening.  The Lady Pirates led 17-2 after one and 34-15 at the break before cruising through a 44 point second half; mainly using a tough full court defense to force 27 host turnovers.  The Lady Mustangs (3-3) were led in scoring by Madison Fields, who finished with nine.  New Washington Girls Basketball Coach Kirsti Holloway was quoted in the News and Tribune’s coverage as “I’m just completely flabbergasted,”….. “Never in my wildest imagination did I expect an outcome like this.”  The Lady Pirates host MSC foe Austin on the 29th of November.

The Pirates (1-1) dominated the Mustangs in the second of the double header, the majority of the game; but allowed the Mustangs to fight their way back into the game forcing overtime.  Charlestown prevailed 60-49 after finding the basket again from the charity stripe in the extra period; including Brady Latham scoring six of his total nine of the evening on six huge free throws.  Charlestown led by as many as eighteen at times, outscoring the host Mustangs 10-2 in the second frame.  The Pirates were led in scoring by Max Mitchell’s 14 and got 12 from Bo Braunecker, and another 10 from Addison Logsdon.  New Washington (0-1) was led in scoring by Hunter Miles, who finished with 13 points, including three treys.  The Mustangs out rebounded the Pirates 32-31.  The Pirates begin MSC play on Tuesday, November 28th at Silver Creek; who is 1-0 after a 38-34 win at Henryville earlier this week.

Lady Pirate Home Opener Saturday Night

Pirate Nation, it is time!! Tomorrow night is the home opener for Coach Scott Matthews and the Charlestown Girls’ Basketball team. The Lady Pirates, who feature junior Samantha Matthews (averaged 15.9 points per game last year) and senior Bri Harvey (averaged 13.2 points per game last year) face off against conference rival and state ranked North Harrison Lady Cats, which includes Junior Lily Hatton (averaged 20.1 points per game last year), and senior Cali Nolot (averaged 13.5 points per game). The Lady Pirates (1-0) open up conference play tomorrow night, JV tip will begin at 6:00pm, with the varsity to follow. Come out and support your Charlestown Lady Pirates tomorrow night!

Romeo & the Bulldogs Visit CHS Arena Nov. 21st

The New Albany Bulldogs and their Senior five-star college recruit (ranked 6th Nationally by Rival.com) Romeo Langford will visit the CHS Sports Arena for a regular season boys basketball match up with the Pirates on Tuesday, November 21st.  Langford is a 6-5, 175 pound shooting guard, who during his high school career has averaged 29 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists per game while leading New Albany High School to a state championship in 2016.  Langford is viewed as the favorite to win Indiana’s prestigious Mr. Basketball award next year; and has narrowed his college pick down to Indiana, North Carolina, Kansas, UCLA and Vanderbilt.  Tickets for the game are $5.00 each and on sale now in the Charlestown High School Athletic Office, until sold out.  Special Notice to Pirate Nation Fans:  Due to ticket demand for this game, CHS season passes can not be used for admission into this event.

Band of Pirates Travel to Indy Finals Saturday

The Charlestown Band of Pirates will be traveling to Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana this Saturday to perform in the ISSMA Scholastic Finals!

After a fantastic performance in Prelims and receiving GOLD with distinction in Effects, we are very excited for this performance and are very proud of what our marching band and color guard have done this year.

This years show is titled, “Carmen,” and includes selections from George Bizet’s famous opera, including “Habenera” and “Toredador.” The band is under the field direction of Natalie Lowe with Brass Captain Ethan Hartsfield, Woodwind Captain Lauren Gaines, Percussion Captain Kylen Farmer, and Guard Captain Sarah Peak.

The band will be departing CHS at 6:30am and will be performing at 11:13am.
