Charlestown Welcomes Coach Joe Witten to Lady Pirate Softball

WPMQ would like to welcome Coach Joe Witten to Charlestown Lady Pirate softball for the 2021-22 season!
Coach Witten comes to us with an extensive and impressive resume. He spent ten seasons at Floyd Central before he made the move to Indiana University Southeast where he spent the last nine seasons as the head of the Grenadiers’ very successful NAIA program.
While at Floyd Central, Coach Witten earned five Hoosier Hills Conference titles, five sectional titles, one regional title, and one state finals appearance. He was a five-time HHC Coach of the Year, a four-time ICGSA District V Coach of the Year, and a four-time Indiana All-Star game coach. With 222 wins for the Highlanders, Witten is the all time winningest coach in school history.
More recently at Indiana University Southeast, Witten compiled a 293-129-1 record and is the program’s all-time wins leader. Under his direction, the Grenadiers made six national tournament appearances in eight possible seasons. Witten was named conference Coach of the Year four times. Each of his nine Grenadier teams were named NAIA Scholar Teams with 3.0 GPAs or higher and 22 scholar-athletes were named NFCA Scholar-Athletes during his tenure. The Grenadiers placed 47 student-athletes on all-conference teams from 2013-2021.
WPMQ is excited to have Coach Witten on the softball field and in the classroom at CHS.

Crace Signs with Alice Lloyd to Play College Hoops

Front (L to R): Kali Crace (sister), Angela Crace (mother), Ty Crace, Trey Crace (brother)
Back: Ryne Loggins (ALC Assistant Coach) and Sean Smith (Charlestown Basketball Coach)

Recently, Charlestown senior Ty Crace was joined by teammates, family, and friends as he signed his celebratory letter of intent to attend school and play basketball at Alice Lloyd  College next year.

Alice Lloyd College is a private work college in Pippa Passes, Kentucky. From the early Native Americans to the brave settlers to the small family farms to the proud coal miners there is no doubt that the Appalachian Mountains are rich with history. Alice Lloyd College resides in the heart of Appalachia and has over one hundred years of history. ALC offers eighteen majors under a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science.

Alice Lloyd College teams are nicknamed the Eagles. The college is a dual member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the NCCAA primarily competing in the River States Conference (RSC). They compete in the Mid East Region of NCCAA Division 1.

When asked about his choice to play for the Eagles at Alice Lloyd, Crace said, “Alice Lloyd is a good fit me because they’ve allowed me to follow my dream of playing college basketball as well as my college being paid for towards a great education that will prepare me for my future endeavors. Charlestown High School is for sure my home and I’m thankful for everyone that’s been there for me throughout my journey.”

Charlestown basketball coach Sean Smith has coached Crace for 2 years now. He has guided and allowed Crace to be a key player on the team for these last couple years. This is what he had to say about his former player: “We would like to congratulate Ty on the next chapter of his basketball career at Alice Lloyd. Ty has a great deal of passion for the game of basketball and has worked hard to earn this opportunity. He is a skilled player who can score in a variety of ways and who can also create scoring opportunities for others. We are happy for Ty and wish him and the Eagles the best of luck!”
