Charlestown Wins the Pirate Relays Overall Trophy

pIRATERELAYS2016Charlestown High School Boys and Girls Track teams competed in the annual Pirate Relays Wednesday night, hosted at Charlestown High School.  The Pirate boys and girls teams both placed 3rd respectively; but overall their combined scores were good enough to earn the Event Boys and Girls Combined Team Champions Trophy; beating Corydon, Crawford Co, Austin, North Harrison and Scottsburg.

Lady Pirate finishes of note included:  1st place: Long Jump – Molly Brauneker / Ilanya Keltner; and 800M Relay combo of Molly Brauneker, Cheyanne, Ilanya Ketner, & Tayte Motsinger.  2nd place: High Jump – Tayte Motsinger / Cheyanne Hawk; Shuttle Hurdles – Tayte Motsinger / Carrley Shreve; the 1600M Relay combination of Carrley Shreve, Gabi Gagnon, Molly Brauneker, & Alexis Gurr; and the Sprint Medley combo of Ilanya Ketner, Carrley Shreve, Gabi Gagnon, and Alexis Gurr.

Pirate finishes of note included:  1st place:  Long Jump, Shuttle Hurdle Relay, and the 1600M Relay combination.  2nd place: High Jump, 400M & 800M relays.

“I am so proud of the girls.  We had 9 girls competing, several girls had 4 events.  Adia Wells, Alex Chester, and Cheyanne Hawk, Molly Brauneker, Ilanya Ketner had personal bests in their field events.  I cannot remember the last time the track teams won the Combined Team Champion Trophy”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kim Carroll.

Mandatory Pirate Basketball Meeting Scheduled

Pirate Basketball Head Coach Jason Connell has announced that he will hold a mandatory parent meeting for any one having sons wanting to try out for CHS Pirate Basketball next year.  The meeting will be held Monday, April 25th at 6 in the main gym.  Discussions will include summer activities, fundraising, and expectations.

Sherrill and Lady Pirates Take Down Creek 6-3

SherrillsoftballThe Mid-Southern Conference Softball race, although early in the season, is just that, a race.  Coming into Tuesday’s game at Silver Creek, Charlestown… along with North Harrison, Salem, and Silver Creek were sharing an undefeated conference start, with Brownstown one game back and in the mix.  The Lady Pirates, along with the rest of the Mid-Southern Conference Softball programs; know that every single conference game is critical.  Tuesday evening, the Charlestown Lady Pirates did what they had to do; beat arch-rival Silver Creek and keep themselves in a position to vie for defending their 2015 title.  Scoreless after three complete innings, Charlestown scored one in the fourth and three in the sixth to lead the hosts 4-0 going to the bottom of the sixth.  The Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs heading in to the seventh (4-2); when Senior Leah Sherrill basically put the game away for Charlestown.  Despite  Creek showing signs of a rally, and Charlestown clinging to a two run lead with two outs; Sherrill smacked her third homer of the season at a perfect time.  Sherrill finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate, including a triple and three RBIs.  Silver Creek was held to one run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 6-3 final score.  Carly Price got the seven inning win from the circle, allowing three runs on just five hits, and striking out five.  Lady Pirate MacKenzie Smith went 2-for-4 and scored three times and Brooke Adams finished 2-for-3.  Charlestown improved their record to 6-3 & 3-0 MSC, while the Dragons fell to 3-1 in MSC play.  The Lady Pirates will be back in action on Thursday, hosting MSC rival Clarksville at 5:00 pm.  Charlestown will host North Harrison May 3rd, host Brownstown on May 5th, and travel to Salem on May 9th.

Spring Sports Season Preview Show On-line

Spring Sports Season Preview ShowCharlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting has posted their 2016 Spring Sports Season Preview Show on-line at www.PiratePride.BLUE/PreseasonShows.  The annual video show features Pirate Baseball Head Coach Ricky Romans and Lady Pirate Softball Head Coach John Smith.  The show was filmed last week on the campus of Charlestown High School by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting and Ctown.TV.  Thanks to sponsors Bill Broughton Trucking and Excavating, Papa Johns Pizza, Grayson Funeral Homes and Fields Custom Cabinets.

Lady Pirate Tennis Blanks Salem 5-0

Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis continued their winning ways Monday evening, improving their record to 5-1 & 4-1 MSC with a 5-0 thrashing of host Salem.  Samantha Matthews won #1 singles 6-2, 7-6 (9-7); Megan Crawford won #2 singles 6-0, 6-0; Sidney Goedeker won #3 singles 6-4, 6-2; while Suzannah Fielding & Haley Bussey won #1 doubles 6-4, 6-2; and Hannah Bussey & Maddie Nuxoll won #2 doubles 6-4, 6-2.  JV Doubles was also victorius as Brenley Berger and Grace Sellers won 8-3.  The Lady Pirates will host MSC rival Scottsburg Tuesday evening at 5:00 pm.

Pirate Softball Slips Past Warriorettes

Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball hosted the Warriorettes of Scottsburg in an important Mid-Southern Conference match-up.  Charlestown (5-2 & 2-0 MSC) jumped out to a 8-2 lead in a error plagued battle; before a Scottsburg five run rally came up short in the top of the seventh.  The Lady Pirates’ Carly Price got the win from the circle, allowing seven hits, four runs and retiring six batters.  Charlestown scored eight runs off thirteen hits while Scottsburg scored seven off seven hits.  Both Carly Price and Sarah Willinger both recorded timely triples to help the Lady Pirates survive.  Leah Sherrill finished 3-4 at the plate with two RBI’s, while Mackenzie Smith and Bethany Hall both finished 2-4 at bat.  Charlestown will next host New Albany Monday at 5:00 pm.

Lady Pirate Tennis Tops South Central 4-1

Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis stepped out of Mid-Southern Conference play Thursday evening hosting the Rebels of South Central High School.  The Lady Pirates (4-1 & 3-1 MSC) swept doubles play and won two of three singles matches.  Samantha Matthews fell in #1 singles 7-5, 1-6 & 2-6; Megan Crawford won in #2 singles 6-0 & 6-2; Sidney Goedeker won in #3 singles 6-3 & 6-2.  Suzannah Fielding and Haley Bussey won the #1 doubles match 3-6, 6-2, & 6-4; and Hannah Bussey and Maddie Nuxoll won in #2 doubles 2-6, 6-0 & 6-2.  Charlestown is back in action at Salem Monday in MSC play.
