Pirates Sweep Rebels 5-0, Play Salem Tuesday

Charlestown Pirate Tennis hosted Southwestern Monday afternoon for a non-conference showdown with the Rebels.  The Pirates put the sweep on the visitors, dominating to a 5-0 conclusion at Charlestown High School.  Miles Matthews won #1 singles play (6-1, 6-1); Trey Woodward won #2 singles (6-3, 6-2), and Steven Delaney took #3 singles (6-0, 6-0).  Jacob Doherty and Chase Wray also dominated #1 doubles play, winning (6-0,  6-0) while Trent Reid and Isaac Bates finished the sweep winning #2 doubles (7-5, 6-2).  The win over Southwestern improved the Pirates record to 12-3 heading into Tuesday’s MSC finale at Salem, and Wednesday’s Silver Creek Sectional opener versus Silver Creek at 4:30 pm.

Pirate Tennis Tops Cougars 4-1

Charlestown Pirate Tennis traveled to Ramsey, Indiana Thursday evening to clash with MSC foe North Harrison.  The Pirates took care of business, winning 4-1 behind continued solid singles play.  Miles Matthews won #1 singles (6-3,  6-2), Trey Woodward won #2 singles (6-2,  6-0), and Steven Delaney finished the sweep winning 6-0 and 6-1.  Josh Copeland and Jacob Doherty took care of #1 doubles (7-5,  6-2); however Chase Wray and Aaron Meyer lost in three sets 5-7,  7-6 (8-6 tiebreaker) 6-10 in super tiebreaker for third set due to darkness.  “Singles play was outstanding and good to see 1 Doubles bounce back after setback at Brownstown”, commented Head Coach Scott Matthews.  Charlestown improved to 11-3 (6-2 in MSC) on the season with sectionals approaching next week.

Fall Sport Post Season Play Approaching

The 2016 regular seasons of fall sports are beginning to wind down and prepare for post season state tourney play, here are the dates you need to know in advance as details of all post season play will be posted on www.PiratePride.BLUE when official:

Pirate and Lady Pirate Soccer will learn their sectional match-up pairings on Friday, September 23rd between 8am and noon.  The Pirates and Lady Pirates will play in the Class 2A Sectional #28 at Floyd Central between October 3rd and 8th.

Pirate Tennis will learn their sectional match-up pairings on Monday, September 26th.  The Pirates will play in the Silver Creek Sectional between September 28th and October 1st.

Pirate Football will learn their sectional match-up pairings on Sunday, October 2nd at approximately 8:00 pm.  The Pirates will play in Class 3A Sectional #31 between October 21st and November 4th.

Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country will participate in their sectional meet on Saturday, October 8th, hosted by Southwestern High School in Hanover, Indiana.

Lady Pirate Volleyball will learn their sectional match-up pairings on Monday, October 10th, at approximately 8am.  The Lady Pirates will play in the Class 3A Sectional #30 hosted by Brownstown HS between October 18th and 22nd.

Pirate Tennis Sweeps Hornets

Charlestown Pirate Tennis swept the visiting Henryville Hornets Wednesday evening 5-0 and improved their record to 10-3 and 5-2 MSC on the season.  Miles Matthews won #1 singles, Trey Woodward took #2 singles, and Steven Delaney handled #3 singles.  Jacob Doherty / Josh Copeland won #1 Doubles and Chase Wray / Aaron Meyer won #2 Doubles to secure the shutout.  The Pirates will travel to North Harrison Thursday for a huge Mid-Southern Conference showdown with the Cougars.  Best of Luck Pirates!

Pirate Tennis Tops Brownstown on the Road

Charlestown Pirate Tennis traveled to MSC rival Brownstown Monday evening and improved their record to 10-3 and 5-2 in conference with a 3-2 win over the Braves.  The match was tight, but the Pirates prevailed as Miles Matthews and Trey Woodward put two quick points on the board for the Pirates winning 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-3 respectively in one and two singles.  But the match wasn’t decided until Steven Delaney pulled out a two and a half hour three set match 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 including winning the last six games of the third set after falling behind 3-0.  Doubles teams of Josh Copeland and Jacob Doherty 1 doubles and Chase Wray and Aaron Meyer both lost in straight sets.  Patrick McCutcheon/ Jase Smith, Jacob Roberts/Issac Bates, and Nathan Massie/Jaz Bruce played well in JV matches against the home standing Braves.  Pirate Tennis will be back in action Wednesday hosting Henryville and Thursday at North Harrison.

Pirate Tennis Sweeps Corydon 5-0

The Charlestown Pirate Tennis team improved their record to 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the MSC Thursday evening after traveling to Corydon and sweeping the Panthers 5-0.  Miles Matthews took #1 singles 6-0, 6-1, Trey Woodward handled #2 singles 6-2, 6-0, and Steven Delaney dominated #3 singles 6-0, 6-0.  In doubles play, Pirates Josh Copeland and Jacob Doherty won 6-0, 6-0 while Pirates Chase Wray and Aaron Meyer took care of #2 doubles business to the tune of 6-2, 6-2.  IN Junior Varsity action, Jacob Roberts and Trent Reid won 8-6 and Nathan Massie and Pat McCutcheon won 8-7 (7-1).  The Pirates now prepare for Saturday’s Jeffersonville Invitational and a big MSC showdown Monday at Brownstown (4-2).

Pirate Tennis Sweeps Borden

The Charlestown Pirate Tennis team (4-2 overall; 0-2 MSC) looked impressive on Tuesday night when they swept sectional rival Borden at home 5-0 to improve their season record to 4-2 overall. In one singles, Miles Matthews took down Joseph Volstedt 6-2, 6-2. At two singles, Trey Woodward defeated Dawson Nale 6-2, 7-5. At three singles, Steven Delaney defeated Brandon Thompson 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles teams played extremely well. At one doubles, Josh Copeland and Jacob Doherty defeated Corey Anderson and Mason Morris 6-3, 6-0. Also, at two doubles, Chase Wray and Aaron Meyer defeated Mason LaGrange and Jackson Wagnor 6-4, 6-2. Coach Matthews said this win was a great team win, and that singles played outstanding against Borden. The Charlestown Pirates (4-2 overall) will try to pick up their first MSC win of the season on Tuesday night, September 6th, as they travel up to Scott County to face off against Austin.
