Softball will travel to West Washington on Saturday, May 20th to play in their invitational. More information TBA.
Recently Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball Senior Mackenzie Smith gathered with family, friends and coaches to sign a letter of intent to play softball and attend Hanover College next school year. During the past two seasons, Mackenzie has maintained a .505 batting average, logged 55 hits, 16 RBI’s and 47 runs for Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball. Seated in the photo with Mackenzie are Assistant Coach Jeff Webster, her parents Lady Pirate Head Coach John Smith and Marci Smith, and Charlestown HS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert. Mackenzie was also joined by three of her travel play coaches, standing from left to right Paige Dickey (holding Emery Lieberman), Dennie Jenkins, and Chelsea Jordan. Mackenzie plans to major in accounting at Hanover and was attracted to the college because of its location, being close to home and its size. When asked for advice for others wanting to play sports in college, Mackenzie commented the “putting in the work goes a long way and having confidence along the way, and not letting adversity get in the way. Congratulations to Mackenzie Smith and best of luck at Softball at the next level.
Due to the rain yesterday and cold temperatures, all Pirate & Lady Pirate events have been cancelled for this evening. This includes JV Baseball at Lanesville, Softball at Corydon, Track & Field at Salem and Girls Tennis at North Harrison. The Charlestown High School Athletic Department has announced the following makeup dates for the postponed events:
Lady Pirate Softball at Corydon Central will now be played on Tuesday, April 18th starting at 5:00pm.
Lady Pirate Tennis at North Harrison will now be played on Friday, April 21st starting at 4:30pm.
Makeup dates for all other cancelled events have not been determined as of now.
On Tuesday, the Courier Journal announced that Charlestown Softball player Mackenzie Smith had been named as their recipient of the Courier Journal Athlete of the Week presented by Norton Sports Health. Mackenzie led the Lady Pirates to a win in their season opener against New Washington on March 22nd, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs and scoring three runs in their 12-0 win over the Lady Mustangs. The Charlestown High School Softball program and the City of Charlestown – Youth & Family Sports will offer a developmental clinic for girls ages 6-14. This program will be conducted on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Charlestown High School from 12:00 to 3:00, and will focus on age appropriate softball fundamentals in a “camp-like” setting. The cost is $20, which includes admission to the clinic, admission to the Lady Pirates game that follows the clinic, and dinner during the game. It is recommended that participants wear appropriate softball attire (softball pants and both cleats and tennis shoes) and have the needed equipment to participate (glove, bat, helmet, etc.). Cash or check is acceptable (checks can be made to: Pirate Pride, softball in memo). All participants will be invited to stay after the clinic and watch the Lady Pirates Softball Team take on the New Washington Mustangs in their first game of the season!

Anyone interested in trying out for any Charlestown High School Spring Sport must have a completed physical on file with the school Athletic Department.

Any CHS boy interested in playing Charlestown Pirate Golf during the upcoming season should attend a meeting in Coach Tolliver’s room (A224) on Monday, March 6th, during IMPACT. Please contact Coach Tolliver for more information if needed in advance of Monday’s meeting.
Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis will begin Monday, March 13th at 3:15 pm (to 5:00 pm), at the Charlestown High School Tennis Courts. Questions regarding Lady Pirate Tennis can be directed to Head Coach Scott Matthews at smatthew@gccschools.com.
Pirate Baseball Tryouts will be held on Monday, March 13th from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at the CHS Baseball facility. Anyone interested in trying out for the high school baseball team needs to come prepared for inside and/or outside workout on Monday the 13th. Gray baseball pants, black t-shirt, hat and cleats are needed while outside; while tennis shoes or turf shoes are needed inside as cleats are not allowed inside the hitting facility.
