Jones Slam Helps Lift Pirate Sluggers Over Columbus East

The Charlestown Pirate Baseball team got the timely situational hits needed to overpower the visiting Class 4A #13 Olympians; and move to 13-5 on the season.  A pair of first inning Pirate errors allowed Columbus East to put base runners in place before their number five batter smacked a home run to jump out to a 3-0 lead.  Two innings later, the Pirates returned the favor.  Senior Jason Houchens started the rally with a double to left field, before Justin Farris singled to right; that set the stage for Ryan Jones, currently batting over .560 on the season.  Jones took full advantage of the opportunity with three run home run over the left center field fence.  Senior Drew Reich kept the rally going by hitting a single before Devon Krueger reached on balls, and Tanner Wesp singled to add two more runs making the score 5-3.  The Olympians tied the score at five in the top of sixth when a single to right field, with bases loaded, plated two.  The Pirates added a run in the bottom of the sixth when Dewey Cardwell slapped a double to left field and Justin Farris drove him home with a triple to right field.  The play provoked CPPSB to name Farris the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game.  Dalton Brown got the win on the mound in relief of starter Colin Martin.  Devon Krueger earned a save in relief of Brown in the sixth.  “Good win tonight for our program. We got good pitching tonight, played solid defense after a couple tough plays early and got some timely hits”, commented Head Coach Ricky Romans.  The Pirates are back in action next Tuesday at New Washington before a big MSC showdown hosting Brownstown.

Lady Pirate Webster to Play in Softball National Championship

WebsterWVPirate Nation still has fresh memories of Indiana All-Star and Lady Pirate standout Alli Webster burning up the plate, and leading Charlestown Softball to winning seasons and Sectional Championships!

Webster, now in her second year playing softball at Wabash Valley Junior College, is still pitching….and still excelling, to say the least.  Webster was just named the 2015 Region 24 College Player of the year, with a pitching record of 23-2 this season.  Alli and her Lady Warriors are 37-11 this season and now headed to the 2015 NJCAA Division 1 National Championship, to be held May 13th through the 16th in St. George, Utah.  The National Championship brings the sixteen Junior College Division 1 Regional Champions, from across the country; together to determine a National Champion using double-elimination tournament.  For more information on the NJCAA Division 1 Softball Championship Tourney, including results, brackets, schedules and links to Live Broadcast Information; log on to www.sgcity.org/njcaa.  For more information about Wabash Valley College Softball, log on to www.wvcwarriorathletics.com/sports/sball.

This season Webster has 234 strikeouts (averaging over ten per game) in 161.2 innings pitched, ten shutout victories, and an earned run average of 1.47.  Alli is a 2013 graduate of Charlestown High School, and the daughter of Jeff and Cindy Webster.

“She is our go-to gal”, commented Wabash Valley Softball Head Coach Paul Schnarre.  “Alli has become well respected in our Region of play; she’s got the talent for where we are going, and has really come through for us all season long”, concluded Coach Schnarre.

When Alli was asked how it feels to be playing for a National Championship at the NJCAA level; she commented “Pretty Amazing!”  Those of us who know Webster, know that she is a bright young lady of few words…..who lets her performance on the field speak for itself.  “Dominating” defines her level of competition in the sport of Softball; its great that Pirate Nation, who witnessed her in high school dominance, can proudly see her succeed at the next level.  Alli’s success is a testament to the philosophies of life-long hard work and perseverance that Alli demonstrates.  She took what she was able to achieve at the high school level and has successfully taken it to the next level.

“Ali is one of the best players I’ve ever coached.  She really enjoys the game and I believe she will do well at Nationals and at the next level!, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kevin Zollman regarding Webster’s impending trip to Utah next week.

In February of this year, Alli verbally committed to play softball next season at Purdue-Calumet (Hammond, Indiana); another nationally ranked program.  Pirate Nation is very proud of Alli and wishes her and the Lady Warriors the best of luck in the National Championship tourney next week!
