Lady Pirate Volleyball Announces Trivia Night Fundraiser

VBTriviaNightPoster300The Charlestown HS Lady Pirate Volleyball program is excited to announce their first annual TRIVIA NIGHT Fundraiser to benefit the high school volleyball program.  The event will be held on Saturday evening, June 3rd, in the cafetorium of the Charlestown Middle School.  Doors will open at 5:30 pm and will consist of teams of up to six players competing through ten rounds of one hundred general trivia questions for prizes and bragging rights.  The event will also include Pull Tab sales, Silent Auction item opportunities, Mulligan sales, and lite concessions; again all to directly benefit Lady Pirate Volleyball.  Teams of all ages are welcome to join in the fun and competition of Trivia-mania.  Teams cost $60 each and can be registered in advance by calling Frank at 502-718-1233.  For more information call Frank at the previous number or email us.

Track & Field Finish Very Successful Regular Seasons

The Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Track & Field teams hosted a three-way meet with Rock Creek and Southwestern Tuesday night at Dutch Reis Field.  Charlestown swept first place in both boys and girls competition.  For the Lady Pirates, it was a milestone season, as they finished first in all of their regular season meets….which may very well be a first.  Charlestown girls won with a total score of 82, better than Rock Creek’s 38 and Southwestern’s 18.  First place girls finishes included:  Jenna Daniel Shot put, long jump, 4×100 Relay; DeAsia King Discus; Tayte Motsinger 100 and 300 Hurdles; Katie Rhodes 1600M, 4×800 Relay; Ashley Wight 400M, 4×400 Relay; Clare Mitchell 3200M, 4×800 Relay; Molly Brauneker 4×800 Relay, 4×400 Relay; Alexis Gurr 4×800 Relay, 4×400 Relay; Carley Conway 4×100 Relay, 4×400 Relay; Ilayah Keltner 4×100 Relay; and Mackenzie Byrnes 4×100 Relay.

“Senior Jenna Daniel finished her last home meet with personal bests in Shot put (increasing her throw 2′), and long jump.  She had a great night.  We had several girls improve their times/throws as well.  I feel we are ready for Conference and Sectional coming up in next 2 weeks”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kim Carroll.

The Pirates scored 69 points to win boys competition, better than Southwestern’s 43 and Rock Creek’s 22.  The Pirates were led by the following first place finishes Tuesday evening:  Luke Fincum-Shot; Brenden Lawler-Long Jump; Bo Braunecker-Discus; Steven Delaney-300 and 110 Hurdles; Trey Woodward-100 Dash and 200 Dash; 4X1 Relay of Woodward, Lawler, Dickens and Wurtsmith; and the 4X4 Relay of Steven Delaney, Logan Gurr, Drashaun Morrow and Trey Woodward.

 

“It was good to finally get to run against competition again, as the North Harrison Invite was cancelled on Friday due to the weather.  With Conference and Sectionals coming up the next two weeks, we really needed the work”, commented Pirate Head Coach Jerry Doyle.

Knoebel Signs with IU Southeast to Play Ball

KneobelSigningRecently Senior Pirate Basketball player gathered with family and school officials to formerly sign his intent to attend and play men’s basketball at Indiana University Southeast.  Jordan stated that given the fast paced style of ball the Grenadiers play; combined with a location that is close to home, were big factors in deciding to play at IUS.  Pirate Basketball Head Coach Jason Connell commented that Jordan’s decision is a “great opportunity” for him, and is well deserving since he has literally “dedicated his life to playing basketball”.  Jordan’s worked hard on being a fast paced player, “his speed and shifty ball handling capabilities” should fit in real well at Indiana University Southeast.  “He’s a tough kid, and we like that”, commented ten year IUS Head Coach Wiley Brown.  “We believe Jordan’s type of leadership defensively” will be a big asset to the program.  Coach Brown has also led his Grenadier teams to seven consecutive KIAC Conference Championships from 2007-08 to 2013-14; six-straight KIAC Tournament titles from 2007-08 to 2012-13; with a 186-67 record.

During Jordan’s signing, shown seated at center, he was joined by his parents Tony and Paula Knoebel, seated on either side.  Jordan was also joined by grandmother Faye Gargano (seated far left) and his sister Marissa (seated far right).  Shown left to right standing and supporting Jordan are IUS Head Coach Wiley Brown, Uncle Jeff, CHS Head Coach Jason Connell and CHS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert.  Congratulations to Jordan Knoebel and his decision to play college basketball at Indiana University Southeast.

Boys Basketball Parent Meeting Announced

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball program will hold a parent meeting Wednesday May 3rd, beginning at 6 pm in CHS Sports Arena.  Parents of boys entering grades 9-12 that are interested in playing basketball next school year are encouraged to attend to discuss spring activities, fundraising, parent expenses, and summer basketball program.

ALERT! Cancellations Tonight

Please be advised that the softball game at home against West Washington and the Track & Field invitational at North Harrison are both CANCELLED for tonight due to the threat of severe weather.

Softball will travel to West Washington on Saturday, May 20th to play in their invitational. More information TBA.

Lady Pirate Tennis Outlasts CAI 3-2

Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis hosted Christian Academy Tuesday evening and improved their record to 6-3 by defeating the Lady Warriors in non-conference play.  Samantha Matthews defeated Meghan Hunt 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in #1 singles; Sidney Goedeker fell to Maddie Brown 6-4, 6-2 in #2 singles; and Maddie Nuxoll defeated Lindsey Bilkey 6-0, 6-0.  Christian Academy won #1 doubles (Hannah Bussey and Lizze Hill) while Brenley Berger and Erin Kimbrell won #2 doubles.  Charlestown is back in action Monday at Austin in MSC play.

Girls Track Wins, Delaney Becomes School Hurdle King

DelaneyThe Pirate and Lady Pirate Track & Field team traveled to Scottsburg High School Tuesday evening for a three-way meet including Austin.  Pirate Junior Steven Delaney, broke Charlestown’s school record in the 300 meter hurdle event with a time of 40.20; breaking Brian Baker’s 2006 record of 40.36.  Not to be finished, Delaney then became the school Hurdle King by breaking the 110 meter hurdle school record, logging a time of 14.99 and beating Adam Kemple’s 1996 record of 15.10.  The Pirates took second place at the boys meet with 48 points, behind first place Scottsburg’s 63, and ahead of Austin’s 44.

The Lady Pirates have won the girls meet scoring 90 points and better than host Scottsburg’s 45 and Austin’s 15.  Lady Pirate First place finishes include:  Molly Brauneker – 4×800 relay, 4×400 relay, 800M; Alexis Gurr – 4×800 relay, 4×400 relay; Katie Rhodes – 4×800 relay, 1600M; Clare Mitchell – 4×800 relay; Ilayah Keltner – 100M, 4×100 relay, 200M; Jenna Daniel – 4×100 relay, shot put; Mackenzie Byrnes – 4×100 relay; Tayte Motsinger – 100M hurdles, 300M hurdles, high jump; Carley Conway – 4×400 relay, 4×100 relay, long jump; Ashley Wight – 4×400 relay; and DeAsia King – Discus.

“We had 12 individual girls with personal record’s, and in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.  I am so proud of the improvement all the girls are showing in each meet.  They continue to get better and better”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kim Carroll.
