Pirate Sluggers Upset Brownstown 2-1

BaseballCaptureCharlestown Pirate Baseball hosted their MSC rivals from Brownstown Thursday evening to close out conference play for the season.  The game, originally scheduled for May 11th had been rescheduled due to wet field conditions, proved that this year’s young Pirate Slugger team have potential to be a sleeper opponent in next week’s sectional.  Sophomore Brendan Brainard (3-0) got the call tonight, pitching seven complete innings, earning the win after walking two and striking one out, while the Pirate defense equalized five Brave hits.  Brownstown (14-6 & 6-3 MSC) scored one run in the top of the second, before being denied home plate the remainder of the game.  Brave pitcher Maxie (4-1), recorded his first lose of the season while visiting Charlestown (7-16 & 3-6 MSC) Thursday evening; as both team logged two errors each.  The Pirates tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, but found a hero in Junior Jacob Doherty who finished the game 1-2 at the plate including a double and the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh.  “Couldn’t be more proud of the guys for the heart and effort tonight.  We didn’t play mistake free but they showed a ton of heart and that’s what matters most.  Brendan pitched exceptionally well and gave our team a chance.  This was a quality win for our young ball club”, commented a pleased Pirate Head Coach Ricky Romans.  The Pirates will travel to and compete in the Bedford-North Lawrence Invitational Saturday, before opening Sectional play Wednesday versus Sectional host Silver Creek.

Lady Pirates Finish 5th at Sectionals, Advance Six

Charlestown High School Lady Pirate Track and Field made the short trip to Jeffersonville High School Tuesday night to compete in the IHSAA Sectional meet.  The Lady Pirates finished as a team in fifth place, out of 13 teams; while also advancing six of their team to four events at next Tuesday’s Regional meet.  Advancing are Jenna Daniel, in Shot put event; DeAsia King, in the Discus event; Tayte Motsinger, in the 100M hurdles event; and the 4×100 relay team of Ilayah Keltner, Jenna Daniel, Mackenzie Byrnes, and Carley Conway.  The Regional meet will be held at Bloomington North High School next Tuesday.

The above 4×100 relay also tied the 20 year old school record last night with a time of 53.50.  “We had several girls PR last night.  I am extremely proud of the girls advancing to regionals.  Our 4×100 relay ran great last night”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kim Carroll.

Lady Pirate Tennis End Regular Season with Win

The Charlestown HS Lady Pirate Tennis team finished their regular season campaign Tuesday evening with a 4-1 win at Madison; moving their record to an impressive 12-3 (6-3 MSC) mark.  Samantha Matthews, Maddie Nuxoll, and Sidney Goedeker were all three victorious at Madison Tuesday while sweeping the Cubs in singles competition.  Brenley Berger and Erin Kimbrell won in #2 Doubles; however Hannah Bussey and Lizzie Hill lost a close #1 Doubles match.  Lady Pirate Tennis will now prepare for Sectional play beginning Thursday (May 18th), 4:30 pm at Silver Creek High School; as they will face off against the first round winner of Henryville v. Borden.

Delaney & Woodward Claim MSC Titles, Pirates Finish 2nd

MSCchampsDelaneyWoodwardThursday night was the boy’s turn to compete for conference track & field honors as the Pirates traveled to Corydon High School for their Mid-Southern Conference Championship meet.  Charlestown finished an impressive second place overall, scoring 83 points; trailing Silver Creek’s 147 point first place card.  Brownstown, Scottsburg and Corydon rounded out the top five team scores.  The Pirates were led by two first place / conference championship finishers; as Trey Woodward won the 200 meter dash win a time of 23.15, and Steven Delaney won the 300 meter hurdle event and again shattering the school record with a time of 39.57.  Delaney broke the 300 meter hurdle school record twice this season.  Delaney also finished second place in the 110 hurdles (15.22), and long jump event (20’6.5″).  The Pirate 4×100 relay team of Brenden Lawler, Mitch Wurtsmith, Charles Dickens & Woodward also finished second with a time of 45.3.  The 4×400 relay team of Woodward, Logan Gurr, Drashaun Morrow & Delaney also earned a second place finish in a personal record time of 3:37.51.  Additional Pirate finishes of note including Luke Finchum’s 3rd place Shot Put finish (45’3.25″); Brendan Lawler’s 4th place Long Jump finish (19’11.75″); Bo Braunecker’s 4th place Discus finish (116’6″); and Trey Woodward’s 4th place 100 m dash finish (11.58).  Congratulations to Mid-Southern Conference Champions Steven Delaney (300 m hurdles) and Trey Woodward (200m dash); as well as to the entire Pirate Track & Field Team for finishing an impressive MSC runner-up this year.

Cancellations Tonight

The softball game between Charlestown and Eastern Pekin, and the baseball game between Charlestown and Brownstown Central has been cancelled due to field conditions. Softball will make their game up between Eastern Pekin during the West Washington Invitational on Saturday, May 20th. The Charlestown vs. Brownstown Central baseball game will be made up on Thursday, May 18th at 5:30pm.
