Lady Pirate Softball Thumps Austin, 15-2

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team traveled to Austin for an important conference clash with the Lady Eagles.  Charlestown (9-4 & 3-2 MSC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings; highlighted by a Mackenize Smith solo in the park home run.  Austin added two runs in the fourth, before Charlestown put the game away with a seven run sixth inning before winning 15-2.  Charlestown played twenty-one players during the game.  Junior pitcher Carly Price got the win from the circle, allowing only two hits, and retiring ten batters.  Smith finished 2 for 3 at the plate (including a double and a triple) with two runs, Leah Sherrill went 2 for 4, and Kaitlynn Henning finished 2 for 3 with a double.  The Lady Pirates are back in action Tuesday at Corydon, in an extremely important MSC game; which will be broadcasted by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting beginning at 5:00 pm.

Pirates Find a Way to Win Slugfest with Madison

Ugly is ugly, but a win is a win….the measure the Pirates found themselves feeling after bettering Madison by one run in a non-conference clash Tuesday evening at Charlestown High School.  Regardless, the tenth ranked Pirates (10-3) found the way to get it done in the bottom of sixth and seventh innings, in a game with 25 total hits and 9 total errors.  Austin Smith got the win in relief from the mound in three innings.  Charlestown led Madison 6-4 after four innings completed, before both teams poured on the runs in the fifth; as the Pirates plated five and the Cubs six for a 11-10 score.  Madison scored two more runs in the top of the sixth to take a one run lead before the Pirates plated one in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score, hold Madison (2-8) in the top of the seventh, then score the winning run in the bottom of seventh for the 13 – 12 final score.  Austin Smith is now 4-0 after strikiing out five Madison batters in the final three innings of the game.  Ryan Jones finished 3-4, with 3 Runs, and a RBI.  Dewey Cardwell went 2-5 at the plate but knocked in four runs, and Atom Ward fiinished 2-2, with 2 Runs and a RBI.  “Tonight was just an old fashioned slugfest.  Neither team played great and our defense and pitching was just horrendous.  After all that, somehow we found a way to win”, commented Pirate Head Coach Ricky Romans.  For lack of better words…the upcoming nine days of games are crazy for the #10 3A Pirates.  Charlestown will host Clarksville Thursday, a team that represents a very important conference clash; then travel to Class 4A #2 Floyd Central on Friday, then to Class 3A #5 and arch-rival Silver Creek Monday, before hosting Class 2A #10 Austin next Thursday.  If these games won’t prepare the Pirates for post season play, nothing will on area schedules.  Don’t miss a chance to watch these talented young men play baseball for PirateNation.

Rider and Pirates Outlast Cougars in MSC Battle

The Pirate Baseball team traveled to North Harrison for an important conference battle, as both teams came into the game undefeated in conference play.  The Pirates (9-3 & 4-0 MSC) posted three runs in the first the and held the Cougars to two runs for the 3-2 win.  The Cougars scored their two runs in the fifth inning of play, but it wasn’t enough.  Kelly Rider pitched the complete game, finishing with eight strikeouts, four hits and the win.  “Kelly threw a great game tonight and battled through a lot of adversity. He was sharp and competed tonight”, commented Head Coach Ricky Romans after the contest.  North Harrison (10-3 & 3-1 MSC) had four hits and one error on the evening.  Pirate Tanner Wesp finished two for four at the plate while Pirate Colin Martin finished two for three and two RBIs.  Charlestown will host Madison on Tuesday, April 28th beginning at 5:30 pm.

Lady Pirates Solid Versus Seymour

CarlyPriceThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team stepped out of conference play Monday evening; traveling to Seymour to challenge the Lady Owls.  The Lady Pirates (8-4) started slow, allowing Seymour to plate two runs in the bottom of the first.  Charlestown answered in the third, also scoring two and tying the hosts until the top of the fourth.  Brooke Adams, Kaitlynn Henning, Carly Price, Bethany Hall, and Kendall Cline all singled in the fourth to push their lead to 6-2.  Seymour answered with one run in the sixth before Charlestown plated two more runs in the top of the seven on four additional hits.  Carly Price pitched the complete game and got the win from the circle; as the Lady Pirates topped Seymour 8-3.  Price allowed only five hits and three earned runs, along with striking out three.  Leah Sherrill finished the game 3 of 4 from the plate, including a triple and two RBI’s; earning her the Coyle Chevy, GMC, Buick and Choyle Nissan Player of the Game.  Carly Price finished two of four with two RBIs, while Mackenzie Smith also finished two for four.  “I thought we started slow, but our defense really gave us chances as the game continued.  There’s alot of softball still to be played”, commented Heach Coach Kevin Zollman.  Seymour fell to 6-4, however have chalked up wins against Bedford-North Lawrence, Jeffersonville, Columbus North, and Colmbus East.  The Charlestown Junior Varsity team also got the win in the night-cap, defeating Seymour 10-8.  Lady Pirate Softball is back in action Thursday at Austin.

Henning & Burdin Help Lift East All-Stars to Win

HBCAeastteamWhile most high school girls were sleeping off the all night affects of Prom, Lady Pirates Kaitlynn Henning and Justice Burdin were lacing up the shoes for one more high school game.  Sunday’s annual HBCA (Hoosier Basketball Coaches Association/www.hbcahoops.org) East-West All-Star Classic, at Bloomington North High School; provided the event and venue for one more game before thoughts of college became real.  Henning and Burdin, who recently signed to play Junior College Basketball with tow different schools within the same college conference; got one more chance to play together, and along with Lady Pirate and East All-Star Coach Michael Prichard.  The East All-Star team rallied from a 36-30 halftime deficit to beat their West All-Star counterparts 90-84 in overtime.  Kaitlynn Henning finished the game with 12 points and Justice Burdin 3 respectively.  Game MVP went to Floyd Central’s Madison Kaiser, who finished with 27 points and 16 rebounds.  For more coverage of both the girls and boys HBCA All-Star Classic, go to Justin Sokeland’s article at www.thehhcsports.com.

Lady Pirates Double Up Louisville PRP

SoftballThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team has had success with the non-conference Louisville programs it has played this year.  After dropping their season opener versus Holy Cross, Charlestown has since defeated Louisville Eastern, Fern Creek and now Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP) twice.  The Lady Pirates rallied in the sixth to beat PRP 4-3 in Friday evening’s game one of a double-header; then held on to win the second game 8-7 and improve to 7-4 on the season.  The Lady Pirates will travel to Seymour (6-2) on Monday.

Kaitlynn Henning got Charlestown on the board in the second inning of game #1 with an RBI single that plated Brooke Adams and tied the game at one all.  The Panthers added two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead until the bottom of the sixth; when Kendall Cline got the rally started with a lead off triple.  PRP walked the next Lady Pirate batter, Erin Kimbrell, before Brooke Adams doubled to score Cline and Kimbrell and tie the score at three.  Leah Sherrill, with two away, got her only hit of the game on an RBI single to plate Mackenzie Smith for the winning run after holding PRP at bay in the top of the seventh.  Carly Price got the win, striking out three Panther batters.

Charlestown jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game #2.  The Lady Pirates loaded the bases after Cline got a lead off single, Adams reached after being hit by a pitch, and Henning was walked.  Smith, Sherrill and Price each singled to plate all five runs.  PRP answered, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the third, for a 5-4 game.  Charlestown pushed the score to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Bethany Hall doubled to score Sherrill and Price.  PRP answered again, plating three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score at seven.  After holding PRP in the top of the seventh, Lexi Logsdon, the winning run, reached base on balls when leading off in the bottom of the seventh.  Logsdon was then plated for the win when Hall followed with a single and Kendall Cline hit a RBI walk-off double to end the game with a final score of 8-7.  Leah Sherrill had another big game at the plate, finishing 3 for 4; while Mackenzie Smith, Bethany Hall, and Kendall Cline all finished 2 for 4.  Cline started in the circle before Price got the save in relief of Cline in the fourth.

Tennis: Lady Pirates Top Eastern 3-2

Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis improved to 3-3  on the season and 2-3 in Mid-Southern Conference play after defeating Eastern-Pekin on the road Thursday evening.  Charlestown took the win with a 3-2 advantage, in dominate singles play.  Results include:

Singles #1: Megan Crawford (CHS) was defeated by Kolbi Sponcel 1-6, 2-6

Singles #2: Emily Barton (CHS) defeated Kira Asher 6-1, 6-0

Singles #3: Suzannah Fielding (CHS) defeated Olivia Pickerill 6-1, 6-1

Doubles #1: Jessica Renn and Haley Bussey (CHS) were defeated by Asia Hurst and Riki Hamilton 4-6, 6-3, 0-6

Doubles #2: Hannah Bussey and Sidney Goedeker (CHS) defeated Kirsten Jayne and Ashley Albertson 4-6, 6-0, 7-5

The Lady Pirates return to action Monday at Floyd Central.
