Tom Hamilton, Former Pirate Basketball Coach-Passes

HamiltonCharlestown High School Pirates Coach Tom Hamilton died Wednesday in Shelbyville, KY. He headed the boys’ varsity basketball program at Charlestown from 1968 to 1970, where he directed outstanding players Danny Albertson, Bob Brashear, Mike Bottorff and Norman Kalkhoff.

Hamilton, a graduate of Morehead State University and a giant of a man—six-feet-seven; always with a gracious smile, began his coaching career at Raceland High School in Kentucky, before coming to Charlestown. He was there for three seasons, 1964-65, 1965-66 and 1966-67, producing a remarkable 72 wins with only 22 losses with the Rams.

Coach Hamilton was the younger brother of the outstanding All-American Steve Hamilton from Morehead State University, who also was a standout at Charlestown. Hamilton played for Coach John E. Wood in 1956 and 1957. Hamilton said he had the “best” in the coaching world under his former mentor, Coach John Wood. “Wood came to Charlestown in 1955 and replaced Norton, who went back to Kentucky. Coach Wood was a really good coach and he did really well. His first year with the Pirates was also the first year in our new high school and gym. We were excited about all these events taking place in Charlestown at the time,” he said.

In his three seasons with the Pirates, Coach Hamilton won 33 and lost 31. Some of his athletes that he mentored while at Charlestown were 6’2” Danny Albertson, 6’1” Mike Bottorff, Bob Brashear, Rex Davidson, Norman Kalkhoff, 6’3” Greg Kemp, and Mike Russell. These were excellent players at Charlestown and Hamilton was mainly responsible for transforming them into solid citizens after they left high school and continued their higher education or enter into the working profession.

Who could ever forget when one of Hamilton’s exceptional athletes and great shooter, Danny Albertson poured in 45 points to break the 35 points set by outstanding ace Donnie Bush in 1962? The sparkling performance by Albertson occurred when Henryville visited the Pirates on November 21, 1969.

Charlestown has had the privilege of some of the finest coaches to ever grace the hardwood and guide young men not only in the basketball arena, but also in their careers. Coach Tom Hamilton is among one of the best. He was a winning coach in every sense of the word and ranks as one of the best at Charlestown. He was 75.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday April 12, 2015 at Shelby Christian Church in Shelbyville with his son, Paul Hamilton speaking. Shannon Funeral Home in Shelbyville, KY is in charge of the arrangements.

#2 South Central Gets Past Pirate Baseball, 3-2

The Pirates and the Rebels were originally scheduled to meet at South Central Monday evening; however mother nature had a problem with that.  The game was moved to Charlestown, where limited rain had fallen and the two ranked teams in their respective classes went to work for a non-conference-early-season match-up.  South Central (1-0), ranked #2 in Class A ball, fell behind early in the game when the Pirates (1-1), ranked #11 in Class 3A, landed on the scoreboard first with a run in the opening inning.  The Rebels scored three runs in third, and enough defense in the remaining innings to hold on for a 3-2 victory.  South Central’s Nick Veith got the win from the mound.  Pirate Baseball Slugger Kelly Rider had a nice hitting night for the Pirates, finishing with a double and a home run.  “We left way too many men on base tonight, especially in scoring position.  I thought Veith threw a nice game for them and we just didn’t make adjustments.  It’s early so we’ll make the necessary changes and corrections as we go”, commented Pirate Head Coach Romans.  The Pirates collected five hits and only one error on the night.  The Pirates host New Albany Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm.

IHSAA Announces New School Classifications for 2015‐16, 2016‐17

The Indiana High School Athletic Association, in a March 31st Press Release, announced the new classifications for member schools in several sports for the next two school years.  The enrollment figures, the total of boys and girls in grades 9‐12, were submitted by the schools to the Indiana Department of Education last fall and are used to determine the classifications in the sports of baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls soccer, softball and volleyball.  These class changes will be effective for next school year (2015-16) and the following school year (2016-17).

No changes in class alignment were announced for any Mid-Southern Conference, as Silver Creek will remain 4A, Charlestown, Corydon, North Harrison, Scottsburg, Brownstown and Salem remain 3A, and Clarksville, Austin, and Eastern(Pekin) remain 2A.

A couple Pirate and Lady Pirate Sectional foes will change in a few sports, as Mitchell will drop from 3A to 2A in Baseball, Basketball, Softball and Football.  The Mitchell Bluejackets have been a Football Sectional 31 opponent of the Pirates for the past four years; creating an opening for realignment.  Due to their post season tournament success factor, Providence will move from 2A to 3A and likely join the same Sectional the Lady Pirates play.

According to school enrollment figures, the press release also indicated that Charlestown’s enrollment increased to 735, making it the 16th largest 3A school in the state; and the largest 3A school in the Mid-Southern Conference.  The remaining MSC 3A enrollments numbers include Corydon-717 (21st); North Harrison-660 (33rd); Brownstown-571 (56th); and Salem-558 (58th).

Pirates Begin Season with Win Over 4A Plainfield

The Charlestown Pirate Baseball team got their 2015 campaign off to a winning start Tuesday evening by defeating Plainfield 8-7.  The Plainfield Quakers, coming off a 3-2 loss earlier in the day to Jeffersonville; are an Indiana Class 4A high school from Hendricks County, 10 miles west of Indianapolis.  Plainfield jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning and would take that lead into the bottom of the 3rd.  Charlestown’s offense was sparked in the home half of the 3rd by a leadoff double down the left field line by Ryan Jones.  Dewey Cardwell would follow with a walk.  After advancing on a double steal, Tanner Wesp plated Jones and Cardwell with a 1 out single.  Following another single by Kelly Rider, Brady Hester delivered with a run scoring single with 2 outs to score Wesp.  The Pirates then took the lead on a single by Jason Houchens to score Atom Ward and Brady Hester.  Ward had come on as a courtesy runner for Rider, who was the starting pitcher for the Pirates.  Charlestown would add another run in the 4th inning on a 1 out double by Drew Reich, which scored Ryan Jones after Jones reached on a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cardwell.  The lead grew to 8-4 in the bottom of the 5th when Houchens and Jones scored after drawing walks and ultimately scoring on a couple of Plainfield errors.  Plainfield would add 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning to end the scoring on the night and the Pirates closed the door with a 1-2-3 in the 7th to get their first victory of the new campaign.  “I’m very pleased with our effort tonight.  It’s always nice to get off to a good start with a win.  Kelly threw the ball well tonight and our offense got timely hits.  All in all, it was a good opener to the season”, commented Pirates Head Coach Ricky Romans.  The Pirates are back in action on Friday night when they host Alexandria in the first round of the Silver Creek Invitational at Charlestown High School.  First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm.
