Lady Pirates Top Rival Jeff 9-3, Ready for Salem

CarlyPriceThe Charlestown Lady Pirates stepped out of conference play Monday night at Jeffersonville, winning their thirteenth consecutive game and downing the host Red Devils 9-3.  The Red Devils got off to a quick 3-0 start over Charlestown in the bottom of the first; but were then shut down by the visiting Lady Pirates the remainder of the game.  Carly Price pitched the complete game and got the win for Charlestown from the circle, improving her season record to 12-2.  Price buckled down in the second and finished strong, striking out six, and walking four.  Charlestown poured on the runs in the fourth, scoring six times and keeping the pressure on through Jeff pitching changes and adjustments.  Junior Bethany Hall led the Lady Pirates from the plate, finishing a perfect four for four, all singles and two RBI’s.  Hall got the Big Blue offense rolling in the fourth with a shot to left field.  Leah Sherrill and Carly Price both finished two for four from the plate respectfully.  Sherrill scored two runs and finished with two RBI’s, including one off a huge double to the center field wall in the top of the fifth.  Price added another RBI.  Charlestown finished the outing with 13 hits, putting a damper on Senior Night activities for the home-standing Red Devils.  The Charlestown JV team fell to thier counterparts in the night-cap, 6-1.

The Lady Pirates (17-4) now turns their full attention to finishing their rain delayed contest with Salem.  A win over the Lady Lions will give Charlestown a share of the 2015 Mid-Southern Conference Softball title, with Salem.  Tuesday’s game will pick-up where it was placed into rain delay, trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth with Kendall Cline on first and two outs.  The game will be broadcasted by Pirate Pride Sports on www.CPPSB.com and will begin at 5:30 pm with a JV match up to follow.  Charlestown has won MSC Softball titles in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2012.

Softball Skipper Kevin Zollman Announces Retirement

Zollman2Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball Head Coach Kevin Zollman has announced that he has decided to retire at the conclusion of the 2015 spring season.  Coach Zollman has been at the helm of Lady Pirate Softball since 2002, when he replaced Coach Don Carroll.  Coach Zollman has amassed an overall record of 174-145 during his fourteen seasons (not including the remainder of the current season); which includes back-to-back sectional titles in 2013 and 2014, as well as a Mid-Southern Conference Title in 2012.

Zollman’s 2015 squad (as of Sunday May 17th) has a record of 16 wins and 4 losses, is a half game from winning a share of another Mid-Southern Conference Title, and recently upset the #2 team in the state of Indiana (8-2) on their home field.  The Lady Pirates have also won both the Providence and Edgewood Invitational Tournaments this season.

The Lady Pirates will be celebrating Coach Kevin Zollman, along with their three seniors, during their final home game on Friday, May 22nd.  All former Lady Pirate Softball Coaches and Players are invited and encouraged to attend the celebration before the game; which is scheduled for a 6pm first pitch.

Thank you Coach Zollman, your career as the Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball Head Coach has been historic; we wish you a great retirement after years of hard work, dedication, and leadership.

Low Cost Sports Physicals Available June 8th

Charlestown Primary Care has once again agreed to provide low cost Sports Physicals to Pirate Nation Athletes in preparation for the up-coming 2015-16 school year.  These Sports Physicals are for any Charlestown High School or Charlestown Middle School students (including incoming 6th graders) who are planning on trying out for or participating in any school sport for the upcoming school year.

All Sport Physicals will be performed at Charlestown High School, on the evening of Monday, June 8th, between the hours of 6 and 7 pm.  Each sports physical will be $20 cash (no exceptions), and each student must arrive with a completed IHSAA Physical Form, including parent and student signatures where required.  CLICK HERE to download and print the CHS Athlete Packet, including the correct IHSAA Physical Form.

Lady Pirate Tennis Closes MSC Play with Win Over Corydon

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis team (6-9 & 4-5 MSC) closed out Mid-Southern Conference play with a commanding 5-0 victory over visiting Corydon Central Thursday evening.  The win is the team’s third consecutive, and positions them to finish within the top five of the final conference standings….a nice improvement.  Results include Singles #1: Megan Crawford (CHS) defeated Valerie Crawford 6-2, 6-0; Singles #2: Jessica Renn (CHS) defeated Meredith Wells 6-3, 6-3; Singles #3: Suzannah Fielding (CHS) defeated Jenna Price 6-0, 6-3; Doubles #1: Emily Barton and Haley Bussey (CHS) defeated Annie Blumenstock and Grace Gusler 6-2, 6-1; Doubles #2: Sarai Soto and Sidney Goedeker (CHS) defeated Kayla Elliott and Ashlyn Crawford 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

The Lady Pirates will travel to Crawford County for their season finale Monday before competing in Sectional play beginning next Wednesday.

Rider & Pirates ‘Focused’ in Eliminating Brownstown

The Charlestown Pirate Baseball team (15-5 and 7-1 MSC) moved within one game of their share of the program’s first Mid-Southern Conference Baseball crown since 1987.  The Pirates are currently tied with Silver Creek with one conference game remaining, a Monday showdown at Salem (1-7 MSC).  Thursday night the Pirates eliminated Brownstown (15-7 & 5-3 MSC) from conference contention by defeating the visiting Braves 7-1, behind solid pitching by Kelly Rider.  Rider stayed perfect from the mound (5-0), pitching the complete seven innings, allowing two hits, one run, one walk and four strikeouts.  “I’m very pleased with our effort tonight. We were focused and ready to play after a couple good days of practice. Kelly threw the ball well and we gave him some good run support early that allowed him to settle in”, commented Charlestown Head Coach Ricky Romans after the game.  Colin Martin (.533) led the Pirates from the plate, finishing two for three, including a double and two RBI’s.  Drew Reich also added a double from the plate for the winning cause.  The Pirates scored seven runs off eight hits and committed two errors; Brownstown committed one error.  Saturday, the Pirates will host their Invitational Tournament; slating Charlestown vs Tell City at 11:00 am and Providence vs Mt. Vernon (Posey) at 1:30 pm. Lady Pirates Roll Past Eastern 12-0

The Charlestown Lady Pirates won their 12th consecutive game and improved their season record to 16-4 (6-2 MSC) when rolling past visiting Eastern-Pekin Thursday evening 12-0.  The Lady Pirates scored three in the first, four in the second, and five in the third while shutting out the Lady Musketeers.  Lexi Logsdon finished 3 for 3 with three runs; Kaitlynn Henning finished 2 for 2 with two runs, and Carly Price hit a double RBI triple in the second and plated twice.  Charlestown will host the annual Invitational Tournament Saturday, as Lanesville and Austin will square off at 10:00 am, followed by Charlestown versus Crothersville at noon.  The consolation game is scheduled for 2pm and the Championship game 4:00 pm.  Catch updated via Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting on Twitter.

Lady Pirate Tennis Downs New Washington 4-1

Wednesday, the Charlestown Lady Pirate Tennis team traveled to county arch rival New Washington for a non-conference showdown with the Lady Mustangs.  The Lady Pirates improved their season record to 5-9 with a 4-1 victory at New Washington.  The winning results include :  Singles #1: Megan Crawford (CHS) was defeated by Melanie Dieterlen 4-6, 2-6; Singles #2: Jessica Renn (CHS) defeated Reagan Zimmerman 4-6, 6-4, 6-0; Singles #3: Suzannah Fielding (CHS) defeated Natalie Harrod 6-1, 6-3; Doubles #1: Emily Barton and Haley Bussey (CHS) defeated Lacy Higbie and Morgan Baird 6-3, 6-3; and Doubles #2: Hannah Bussey and Sidney Goedeker (CHS) defeated Katie Harrod and Beth Kehrwald 3-6, 7-5, and 6-0.

The Lady Pirates got the victory coming off a May 8th victory over MSC rival Brownstown, 3-2.  Those results included:  Singles #1: Megan Crawford (CHS) was defeated by Kirsten Acker 4-6, 5-7; Singles #2: Jessica Renn (CHS) was defeated by Brookelyn Hattabaugh 1-6, 6-7; Singles #3: Suzannah Fielding (CHS) defeated Claire Smith 6-0, 6-2; Doubles #1: Emily Barton and Haley Bussey (CHS) defeated Heidi Martin and Sydney Cockerham 6-0, 6-3; and Doubles #2: Sarai Soto and Sidney Goedeker (CHS) defeated Jordan Trowbidge and Jenny Runge 7-5, 7-5.  The win put Charlestown 3-5 in MSC competition.

The Lady Pirates finish Mid-Southern Conference play Thursday (Today) at 5:00 pm hosting the Corydon Central Lady Panthers (0-7 in MSC).
