Pirate Baseball Alumni Game Announced

PirateBaseballAlumniLogoThe Charlestown HS Pirate Baseball program has scheduled their 6th Annual Alumni Baseball Game to benefit the program.  The event will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 3:00 pm, at the Pirate Baseball Stadium on the campus of Charlestown HS.  Pirate Baseball is currently looking for any former player or coach that is interested in participating in this event.  The event is intended to provide a fun and exciting environment for all former player and coaches that have donned the Pirate uniform.  Whether you played one year of freshman ball or four years of Varsity ball; all are welcome.  The cost is of this event is $30.00 per person, which covers your game participation and a t-shirt commemorating the event the 6th Annual Alumni Baseball Game.  Game details will be discussed at the event; which will also include a home run derby competition, food and drinks.  Charlestown Baseball apparel, such as shirts, game hats and jerseys will also be available for purchase.  Event registration and information is available at www.PiratePride.BLUE/Baseball or by logging onto http://piratepride.blue/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/2014PirateBaseballAlumniGameRegistrationForm.pdf directly.  Questions can be directed to Head Coach Ricky Romans at 502-641-2883 or Assistant Coach Brian Hester at 502-643-6878.  Additional donations and sponsorships are available.  All proceeds for this event benefit the CHS Pirate Baseball program and are greatly appreciated.

BoleyVSCAll the drama, all the hype, all for a regular season game?  If it doesn’t make sense, you’re just not familiar with Pirate Football, especially since certain coaching moves occurred earlier this year.  The game, when the final score lite up the scoreboard, had been decided by the players on the field; more so than the coaches on the sidelines, but it was fun to witness.  Charlestown threw everything, except the kitchen, at the match-up; including picking the game for the annual homecoming celebration and honoring the 25th Anniversary of the 89 Championship Pirate Football team.  Regardlessly, the game was hard fought and the most memorable to date in the short four year football series between the two schools.  The Pirates remain undefeated against the Dragons, who are definitely more competitive on the gridiron this year.  Charlestown, still resting the team’s leading rusher (Gaddie), fought off four turnovers and uncharacteristic penalties to put the Dragons away; but not until the fourth quarter.  The Pirates (4-1 & 3-1 MSC) took a 21-0 lead on 16 yard Tristan Chester pass to Cameron Hopson, a one yard quarterback keeper, and a four yard Syd Gieseking run.  Silver Creek (2-2 & 2-2 MSC) scored on two drives to trail 21-13 at the halftime break, and more fumbles and penalties killed drives for both teams throughout most of the third quarter.  Charlestown did capitalize on a Dragon fumble from their own ten late in the third, and Anderson and BoneYardCrowdvSCChester combined to tack on another score.  Silver Creek answered again with a five play drive to tighten the score to 27-20; but that was it for the visitors.  Charlestown put up three more scores, starting with a Tate Boley 60 yard punt return for a touchdown with little of nine minutes remaining in the game.  Jarren Anderson run the two finals scores in, one set up by a 42 yard reception from Chester to Garrett Woods.  Anderson led the Pirates on the ground, finishing the game with 111 yards on 23 carries (2 touchdowns).  Tristan Chester finished the game 10 of 14 for 145 yards of passing (1 touchdown); and Garrett Woods added 74 receiving yards on four catches.  Eli Daniel, who was crowned Homecoming King at halftime, added 43 receiving yards on four catches and 60 rushing yards on three carries.  CPPSB named Tate Boley (Offensive) and Quinton Fetz (Defensive) the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMS, and Coyle Nissan Players of the Game.  Congratulations to Emily Barton, who was crowned Homecoming Queen, and the community of Charlestown, backed by a fantastic Bone Yard student section, who packed Dutch Reis Field loud and proud the entire game.

Short Handed Lady Pirate Soccer Ties Whitefield

Playing without starters Sara Rutkowski and Jordan Popp, the Lady Pirates
persevered and manage a tie against Whitefield Academy. Tayte Motsinger scored a
hat trick and an assist on the fourth goal which went to Gabi Wixon. Irene
Romero, Tapanga Larson, Cheyenne Hawk and Piper Clark stepped up and filled the
void left by the absent starters. The defense logged a lot of minutes and stayed
in the game. Motsinger, Wixon, Beverly Quinteros and Isabel Arredondo kept
pressure on the Whitefield defense. A mental error on the second half kick-off
and a controversial call in the box helped keep Whitefield in the game.

Lady Pirates Fight to the End for their Seniors

VBSeniors14Charlestown JV won 25-20, 13-25, 15-14 / Charlestown Varsity lost 23-25, 17-25, 23-25

Coach Nuxoll:  Lady Pirate Volleyball played with a lot of heart and Pride tonight. The Varsity lost three very close sets. In the first set we gained a large lead from strong serving by Emalee Craven. Lanesville slowly ate away at the lead and we dropped the first set by two points. The second set we played tight with them, until they got on a small serving spree and pulled ahead by four points and we couldn’t close the gap. The third match was back and forth until the bitter end. Unfortunately, we couldn’t pull it out. I was proud how the team came together after every play and went after every ball. We were able to make adjustments when they started tipping the ball a little more which allowed us to stay in the sets. Tonight was our Senior Night and the girls played really hard for each other. I hope that they remember how it felt playing with strong team work and can carry that emotion into our future matches. Senior Shelby Goedeker played with energy and made several plays with lots of hustle. She also contributed 3 kills. Senior Keeley Couch played hard and contributed 5 assists and 1 ace. Emalee Craven contributed 5 aces during an 11 point serving spree and 8 kills.

The JV team pulled together to pull out a close win in a tough three set match. I’m very proud how the girls remained calm and supported each other through the match even when Lanesville started a come back. The first set both teams played well and had several rallies back and forth. Lanesville had a few rotation violations late in the match which we were able to capitalize on. In the second match, we had a few break downs in passing which allowed Lanesville to pull out of reach. In the third set, The scoring went back and fourth. Kiersten James, our middle blocker, came up with two HUGE blocks in a row at the end of the set to help us pull ahead. Lanesville was down 11-14, but had a scoring comeback to tie the set at 14-14. We were able to hang on and earn the last point to win the match. Highlights for this match include 4 blocks by Kiersten James, three kills from Hannah Vincent, and 6 aces and 2 kills for Maddie Nuxoll.

Lady Pirate Volleyball would like to thank the CHS students who came out to the match tonight and to the Pirate Pride Booster Club for paying for the first 25 students to get into the game.  A special shout-out to the CHS boys soccer team who showed great support!

Rhodes Leads Lady Pirates to CAI Invite Win

LadyPirateXCCAIChamps2014Tuesday evening, the Charlestown High School Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country team competed in the annual Christian Academy Invitational; the Lady Pirates defending their 2013 title in the event.  Defend the Lady Pirates did, winning the invitational for the second straight year; largely behind the girls event champion time of 20:49 by Frosh Katie Rhodes.  The Lady Pirates placed five runners in the top 15 finishers!  Senior Whitney Andrews finished in 5th place, Alysha Flaget in 9th, Gabi Gagnon in 12th, and Erin Kimbrell in 13th!  “The girls ran a tremendous race with the cooler temperatures……(I) Couldn’t be more proud!, commented Head Coach Jerry Doyle.  The Pirates also had some notable performances at CAI, as Seth Parker finished 8th overall in 19:14 and Skyler Elmore finished 20th, both receiving Medals.  Pirate Matt Fellows set a new personal record and Darian Zeise ran very well tonight!  For more information on Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country, log on to www.PiratePride.BLUE/CrossCountry.

Pirate Soccer Shuts Out Eagles, 7-0

The Charlestown Pirates hosted the Austin Eagles on Tuesday evening and quickly asserted control of the game getting into the opposing penalty box twice within the first five minutes of the game and drawing contact to earn penalty kicks which were easily converted by Junior attacking midfielder Trent Wight who would go on to earn a rare hat trick of penalty kicks in the game. By the time Senior team captain and attacking midfielder Michael Navetta placed his goal into the net in the 33rd minute, the game was all but over. Freshman attacking midfielder Demetrio Ortuno entered the game and quickly soon helped Senior Colin Martin find the net for his 5th goal of the season with just under 9 minutes remaining in the half. Martin was replaced by Junior Dillon Gray who would control the striker position up until the final 5 minutes of the game, producing countless attacks on goal but never quite finding his way to score. The first half ended with Wight’s third and final penalty kick, Wight would not return to the game after he and Senior Brayden Cooksey were replaced by Freshman duo Anthony Carey and Jeremiah Paiz. The second half started with Paiz, Carey, Ortuno, and Gray being joined by fellow Freshmen Sergio Bolanos, Isai Galvan and Hunter Twist. Together the Freshmen ran the table on the Eagles by dominating possession for the entire second half as the Varsity upperclassmen were benched for the remainder of the game. Isai Galvan would score inside the box for his second goal of the season and Anthony Carey would manage to put the ball into the net twice for his first two goals of his career. But it was Freshman Demetrio Ortuno who used his slight frame and diminutive stature to raise the fans out of their seats on more than one occasion. Although he never scored, Ortuno arguably provided three of the more entertaining moments of the entire game as he narrowly missed from a diving header where upon he threw his body headfirst through the air to contact the ball, later he nearly completed a bicycle kick in the box and perhaps his greatest missed shot of all was a free kick from the corner of the penalty area that he bent up and over the defensive wall of Eagles and beat the keeper only to have the crossbar cruelly deny him with a thunderous clank. “All in all it was a very entertaining game and it shows just how much talent we are developing here in Charlestown, the future is very bright,” said Coach Andrew Smith about the freshmen performances.

Volleyball Senior Night-Free Admission to First 25

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team will host Lanesville this Wednesday evening for their final regular season home game; also designated as Senior Night in honor of Keeley Couch, Miranda Wood and Shelby Goedeker.  The games begin at 6:00 pm in the CHS Sports Arena.  FREE ADMISSION TO THE FIRST TWENTY-FIVE CHS STUDENTS, courtesy of the Pirate Pride Booster Club.
