Lady Pirate Volleyball Splits Tri-Match at Brownstown

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team (2-2 & 2-1 MSC) traveled to Brownstown Central High School Saturday morning for the annual rotating MSC tri-match with Brownstown and Clarksville.  Charlestown faced off with Brownstown first, falling 0-3 (12-25, 12-25, 13-25); before defeating Clarksville 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16).  Both games were broadcasted and archived by Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting at www.CPPSB.com.  Brownstown defeated Clarksville in the third match 3-0 (25-9, 25-7, 25-6).

“The first match of the day against Brownstown was a tough one”, stated Charlestown Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  “I think we are a better team than what the scores show, but Brownstown deserves a lot of credit for their defense.  We had some good solid hits, but their defense picked up everything which really frustrated our hitters”, summarized Coach Nuxoll.  Hannah Thibideau led the Lady Pirates with 4 kills while Kiersten James and Kayleigh Smith each had 3 kills.  Defensively, Hannah Vincent led the team with 10 digs while Chrissa Ledbetter, Sidney Goedeker, and Molly Braunecker each contributed 9 digs.

The Lady Pirates refocused after the Brownstown match; and returned more to early season form against Clarksville.  “We came out strong in the first set and continued that throughout the match.  One of the highlights of the match was our blocking”, commented Coach Nuxoll.  Hannah Thibideau, who was named Coyle Chevy, Buick and Coyle GMC Player of the Game; had 4 block assists, one solo block, and led the team in kills with seven.  Maddie Nuxoll had 6 kills and 21 assists on the offensive side of play.  Chrissa Ledbetter had a good passing game and led the defense with 12 digs.  “Everyone was able to get into the game and contribute to the win.  I am proud of the entire group”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.

Lady Pirates Battled, Giving the Devils All They Could Handle

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team (1-1) traveled to Jeffersonville for a non-conference match-up.  Charlestown fell short of the victory, losing three of four sets 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, and 22-25.  Despite the loss Thursday evening, it was a really good match and the gym was really rocking with lots of great fan support on both sides.  “I really want to thank the Charlestown fans that came out tonight to cheer for us”, stated Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The first set Charlestown struggled some with passing and it became difficult to get some things going.  Better passing in the second set contributed to a Lady Pirate win over Jeff 25-16.  In the third and fourth sets, Jeff took advantage of a substantial lead, however Charlestown was able to battle back to get with-in one point to lose 23-25 and 22-25.  “We were down 7 or 8 points and was able to battle back, but a little too late in both sets”, commented Coach Nuxoll.  Kaia Reid led the Lady Pirate offense with 15 kills and Hannah Thibideau was right behind her with 11 kills and five aces.  Maddie Nuxoll contributed 26 assists.  Molly Braunecker finished with 17 digs and Hannah Vincent and Chrissa Ledbetter both contributed 16 each.  “I thought Hannah Vincent made some good defensive plays to help us turn around some of those big deficits.  This is a good group and they will come into practice to work hard tomorrow for our conference tri-match with Brownstown and Clarksville Saturday morning”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting will cover both games Saturday, live from Brownstown, beginning at 10:00 am at www.CPPSB.com.

The Charlestown Junior Varsity squad improved their record to 2-0 by topping Jeffersonville in Thursday’s opener, 2-1 (25-17, 23-25, & 15-9).  “I was also really proud of our JV team to come out with a win in three sets.  Savannah Spencer had nice serving; Korea Tutt did a good job in the middle offensively and with blocking; and Sam Crace did a nice job distributing the ball as a setter, making some big defensive plays”, summarized Coach Nuxoll.

Lady Pirates Open Season with 3-0 Win at Corydon

VBatCorydonThe senior laden Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team opened their 2017 season Tuesday evening on the road versus MSC rival Corydon.  Charlestown defeated Corydon 3-0 last season; and had not won two in a row in over a decade….until Tuesday night.  The Lady Pirate Varsity (1-0) squad defeated Corydon (0-1) to a convincing tune of 25-10, 25-14, and 25-12; led by Coyle Chevy, Buick and GMC Player of the Game Senior Maddie Nuxoll.  Log on to www.CPPSB.com to listen to the archived broadcast of the game.  “Tonight was a good way to start the season.  It was a total team effort and everyone contributed for the win.  I (Coach Nuxoll) was pleased with the team’s focus and the way they worked together to try some new plays.  Serving was definitely a plus for us.  Our tough serving helped to keep Corydon from running a faster offense out of the middle.  I’m excited to start the season and to see what these girls can accomplish together this year”, summarized Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The Charlestown offense was led by Senior Kaia Reid, who finished with 15 kills.  Senior Kiersten James, Freshman Kayleigh Smith and Senior Maddie Nuxoll each contributed 4 kills a piece.  Nuxoll also contributed 20 assists and 22 service points.  The Lady Pirate defensive posted 11 digs by Senior Chrissa Ledbetter and 10 digs from Senior Hannah Vincent.  “We will go back in the gym tomorrow to prepare for a tough Jeffersonville opponent on Thursday”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  The Charlestown Junior Varsity squad also defeated Corydon, finishing 25-15, 25-9 to begin their season 1-0.
