Lady Pirates Battled, Giving the Devils All They Could Handle

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team (1-1) traveled to Jeffersonville for a non-conference match-up.  Charlestown fell short of the victory, losing three of four sets 19-25, 25-16, 23-25, and 22-25.  Despite the loss Thursday evening, it was a really good match and the gym was really rocking with lots of great fan support on both sides.  “I really want to thank the Charlestown fans that came out tonight to cheer for us”, stated Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The first set Charlestown struggled some with passing and it became difficult to get some things going.  Better passing in the second set contributed to a Lady Pirate win over Jeff 25-16.  In the third and fourth sets, Jeff took advantage of a substantial lead, however Charlestown was able to battle back to get with-in one point to lose 23-25 and 22-25.  “We were down 7 or 8 points and was able to battle back, but a little too late in both sets”, commented Coach Nuxoll.  Kaia Reid led the Lady Pirate offense with 15 kills and Hannah Thibideau was right behind her with 11 kills and five aces.  Maddie Nuxoll contributed 26 assists.  Molly Braunecker finished with 17 digs and Hannah Vincent and Chrissa Ledbetter both contributed 16 each.  “I thought Hannah Vincent made some good defensive plays to help us turn around some of those big deficits.  This is a good group and they will come into practice to work hard tomorrow for our conference tri-match with Brownstown and Clarksville Saturday morning”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting will cover both games Saturday, live from Brownstown, beginning at 10:00 am at www.CPPSB.com.

The Charlestown Junior Varsity squad improved their record to 2-0 by topping Jeffersonville in Thursday’s opener, 2-1 (25-17, 23-25, & 15-9).  “I was also really proud of our JV team to come out with a win in three sets.  Savannah Spencer had nice serving; Korea Tutt did a good job in the middle offensively and with blocking; and Sam Crace did a nice job distributing the ball as a setter, making some big defensive plays”, summarized Coach Nuxoll.
