Rally of the Year Helps Lady Pirate Volleyball Top MSC Rival North Harrison

The Lady Pirates rallied back from a 0-2 deficit against the North Harrison Lady Cougars in a classic MSC showdown last night. The Lady Pirates (now 5-5; MSC 3-2) came back to win three consecutive matches (18-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 15-11) after falling behind 0-2.

“I’m really proud of my program tonight. Both the JV and Varsity were very close matches against a good North Harrison team. I found out tonight that my starting middle was going to be out for a while due to a knee injury, so I had to switch some players around but the whole team worked hard and really stepped up! Every set was close and hard fought by both teams. It was good to see my team’s resilience after being down two sets and fighting their way back. Kayleigh Smith stepped up and covered the middle for us tonight and contributed six kills. Junior, Savannah Spencer played the best game I have ever seen her play and led the offense with 13 kills. Kyra Sharp had 9 kills and 5 service aces. My primary passers, Savannah McClellan, Kyra Sharp, Peyton Crace and Abbi East did their job when we really needed them to. We need to carry this momentum into our tournament this weekend at Crawford Co.” said Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll after the very impressive Pirate victory.

McClellan Breaks School Record in Aces as Pirate Volleyball Defeats Madison Shaw in Three

The Lady Pirate volleyball team collected another win last night at home against Madison Shawe in three sets (27-25, 25-16, and 25-7)

Coach Tammy Nuxoll had this to say about the match: “We started out strong against Shaw with strong serving from Savannah McClellan and had a 17-7 lead but got stuck in a rotation and let them score 13 points in a row. We just cannot do that against any opponent. We we able to hang on with Kayleigh Smith scored some big points at the end of the set to allow us to win 27-25. We played a little better each set and were able to put things away in the third set. Lanae’ Crowe did a nice job mixing up the sets and ended the night with 27 assists. Kayleigh Smith and Savannah McClellan had 8 kills each and Kyra Sharp had seven kills. Abbi East had a good nice passing to help the offense. Savannah McClellan had a great night serving and ended up breaking a school record with 9 aces on the night. The previous record was set in 2016 by Amelia McCoy who had 7 aces in one match. We need to increase our focus for a tough conference matchup tomorrow night against North Harrison.”

Its Homecoming Week, Parade/Pep Rally Tonight!

Indiana’s longest running high school football Homecoming Parade will be held Thursday (TONIGHT), September 6th beginning at 5:00 pm from the south parking lot of the Charlestown High School. The parade route will include traveling south on Monroe from the high school, then west on Main Street before stopping on the city square for a pep rally. Additionally and traditionally, the Pirate Football parents will be selling rib eye sandwiches up on the square from 5:00-6:00 pm during the pep rally festivities like in years past. Pirate Football will host MSC football rival North Harrison Friday night in the Bone Yard with a 7:00 pm kick-off and annual Homecoming ceremony taking place during halftime of the game. HAPPY HOMECOMING PIRATE NATION!

Lukes Runs 475 Yard School Rushing Record in 41-12 Rout

Charlestown Pirate Football (2-1 & 2-1 MSC) traveled to rival Clarksville Friday evening; with hopes of hanging a 12th straight varsity football victory on the Generals and make the all time series 27-22….mission accomplished.  Even though mother nature made Pirate Nation wait til her pregame light show was complete and put away; Junior Marion Lukes and the Pirates wasted no time when the game clock started.

Charlestown cruised to a 41-12 victory, leading 28-6 at the midway point of the evening.  Lukes was simply unstoppable and virtually ran the ball at will finishing the game with 475 yards on eighteen carries and five of the Pirates’ touchdowns; 320 yards on just ten carries during the first half alone.  Lukes’ total against the Generals set a new single game rushing record which had stood since Ryan Roederer’s 350 yard performance against Brownstown in 2000.

Lukes scored touchdowns on runs of 55, 49, 86, 51 and 77 yards; similar to the pregame lightning.  The Pirates also got scoring courtesy of a Devin Lukes touchdown, a Bo Braunecker two point conversion, and three Andrew Mattingly point afters.

The Pirate Defense was led by Sophomore Deke Brown, named the Defensive Player of the Game by The Pirate Network Broadcast on WPMQ 99.3 FM Radio.

“Marion really ran the ball well, looked like he was on another level this evening”, stated Pirate Head Coach Jason Hawkins of his Junior Running back’s performance.

The Pirates are back in action next Friday at home in the Bone Yard, against the defending MSC champs from North Harrison; the Cougars (3-0), who dispatched Corydon 42-7 Friday night.
