Band of Pirates Seize Salem Competition

Congratulations to our Charlestown Marching Band of Pirates, who despite the venue change due to weather, dominated the Class A competition Saturday at Salem High School.  Charlestown, under the direction of JoAnn Talley, brought home another FIRST PLACE trophy from Salem while also scooping awards for Best Drum Major (Lauren Shay), Best Color Guard, Best Music, and Best General Effect (winning all but one category).  Outstanding work Pirates, and what a way to represent and conquer mother nature’s curve ball!!

Lady Pirate Volleyball Runners Up in Crawford County Tournament

The Lady Pirate volleyball team traveled to Crawford County today for a four team tournament and came away runners up to the host school after beating both Orleans (25-15, 25-15) and Mitchell (25-21, 25-16). Coach Tammy Nuxoll said, “The first two matches of the tournament I thought we played well. Our blocking was good in the first two sets and we had some good serving. [But the Wolfpack] “came out to win in the final match and we couldn’t put a ball down due to their blocking and defense.”  The Lady Pirates fell to Crawford County in two (8-25, 8-25).

Overall, on the day Kayleigh Smith had 11 kills and Kyra Sharp had 10 kills and nine digs. Lanae Crowe contributed 9 aces and Kylie McConnell had 6 aces. Coach Nuxoll credited Abbi East and Kyra Sharp for a nice job of passing.”Although I wish we would have showed up to play against Crawford Co. in the final match, I thought the first two matches were good wins for us,” said Nuxoll.

The Lady Pirates will take Monday to prepare for a very busy week of playing.  They travel to Eastern on Tuesday for a Mid Southern Conference matchup, host Lanesville on Wednesday, hit the road again on Thursday for yet another MSC dual at Salem, and cap off the week in the Borden Invitational on Thursday.  Eastern and Salem sit just behind Charlestown in the MSC standings so our Lady Pirates certainly hope to capture those two road wins this week.

Pirates Run Over #6 Cougars 34-22, on Homecoming

Pirate Football improved to 3-1 (overall & MSC) on Homecoming Friday night, upsetting the Class 3A #6 and two time defending conference champs from North Harrison, 34-22.  Charlestown’s offense capitalized on great Pirate defensive plays in the second half to roll to a 27-15 advantage at the end of the third; then a 34-15 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the game.  The Pirate defense minimized the Cougar’s (3-1) leading rusher Jaylen Peake, as he finished the game with 155 total yards on 23 carries; however 142 of those yards where in the first half.  Devin Lukes collected two huge interceptions, which stymied any attempts by North Harrison to muster momentum; while Bo Braunecker came alive in the second stanza to finish with 8 tackles (6 solo) and a sack.

Once again, the Pirate offense got big ground production by Junior standout Marion Lukes.  Frustrating the Cougar defense, Marion logged 347 yards of rushing on 28 carries; after breaking the Charlestown single game record a week prior after a 475 yard performance.  Marion scored four of the five Pirate touchdowns, on runs of 21 and 6 in the first half; and 61 and 77 in the second half.  Lukes goes into week five of the season with a total of 1,144 rushing yards, placing him solidly among the top five rushers in the nation.

Junior Marion Lukes’ 77 yard rushing touchdown during the 3rd Qtr. vs. #6 N. Harrison:

Pirate quarterback Braiden Murphy scored on a seven yard run midway in the fourth quarter; before North Harrison concluded scoring with 85 yard kickoff return by Zane Armstrong.

The Pirates finished with 439 yards of offense, all on the ground; assisted by Addison Logsdon’s 81 yards on 13 carries.

The Pirates play out of conference next Friday, when they travel to Providence (2-2) High School (Clarksville) for another chapter in the forty plus year history between the two programs.  Kick off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Murphy Stadium, to be broadcasted lived on WPMQ 99.3 FM Radio.

Rally of the Year Helps Lady Pirate Volleyball Top MSC Rival North Harrison

The Lady Pirates rallied back from a 0-2 deficit against the North Harrison Lady Cougars in a classic MSC showdown last night. The Lady Pirates (now 5-5; MSC 3-2) came back to win three consecutive matches (18-25, 25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 15-11) after falling behind 0-2.

“I’m really proud of my program tonight. Both the JV and Varsity were very close matches against a good North Harrison team. I found out tonight that my starting middle was going to be out for a while due to a knee injury, so I had to switch some players around but the whole team worked hard and really stepped up! Every set was close and hard fought by both teams. It was good to see my team’s resilience after being down two sets and fighting their way back. Kayleigh Smith stepped up and covered the middle for us tonight and contributed six kills. Junior, Savannah Spencer played the best game I have ever seen her play and led the offense with 13 kills. Kyra Sharp had 9 kills and 5 service aces. My primary passers, Savannah McClellan, Kyra Sharp, Peyton Crace and Abbi East did their job when we really needed them to. We need to carry this momentum into our tournament this weekend at Crawford Co.” said Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll after the very impressive Pirate victory.

The Lady Pirates are back in action this weekend as they have a tournament at Crawford Co.

McClellan Breaks School Record in Aces as Pirate Volleyball Defeats Madison Shaw in Three

The Lady Pirate volleyball team collected another win last night at home against Madison Shawe in three sets (27-25, 25-16, and 25-7)

Coach Tammy Nuxoll had this to say about the match: “We started out strong against Shaw with strong serving from Savannah McClellan and had a 17-7 lead but got stuck in a rotation and let them score 13 points in a row. We just cannot do that against any opponent. We we able to hang on with Kayleigh Smith scored some big points at the end of the set to allow us to win 27-25. We played a little better each set and were able to put things away in the third set. Lanae’ Crowe did a nice job mixing up the sets and ended the night with 27 assists. Kayleigh Smith and Savannah McClellan had 8 kills each and Kyra Sharp had seven kills. Abbi East had a good nice passing to help the offense. Savannah McClellan had a great night serving and ended up breaking a school record with 9 aces on the night. The previous record was set in 2016 by Amelia McCoy who had 7 aces in one match. We need to increase our focus for a tough conference matchup tomorrow night against North Harrison.”
