Boys Soccer:  Silver Creek 2 – Charlestown 1

It was a close match throughout, as expected, but it was Silver Creek who found their way onto the scoreboard first off a penalty kick late in the first half from Junior Midfielder Jacob Atkins.  Silver Creek held the tenuous lead throughout a good portion of the second half as Charlestown struggled to get the ball in behind their staunch defense.  Finally it was a long through ball from Senior Attacking Midfielder Michael Navetta that assisted Junior Trent Wight for a sweet 1v1 against the Dragons keeper that allowed Wight to slot home the equalizer.  But the draw was not to be tonight, as the Charlestown goal tender was caught coming too far out off his line and watched helplessly as the ball bounced high up and over his head to Silver Creek Sophomore Merlin Palencia who drove home the game winner for the host Dragons.

Merica! is the Theme this Friday Night Pirate Nation

mericafansPirate Nation students (@CHSBoneYard on Twitter) have declared the theme for this Friday’s home football game as “Merica'”.  So parent and fans, wear as much red, white & blue to the game Friday night, supporting not only our Pirate Football team; but also the spirited CHS students who are stepping up and making Pirate Nation Proud!  The Pirates (2-1) will host MSC foe North Harrison in the Bone Yard, with a 7:00 pm kick-off.  Tailgating in the CHS parking lot will begin between 5 and 5:30 pm.  Additional features at this Friday’s game include Little Pirate Football Night and the recognition of the 2014 Lady Pirate Softball Sectional Championship team.  If you have a social media Twitter account, consider following @CHSBoneYard and Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting @CPPSB.

Pirates Throttle Generals 49-28 on the Road

The Charlestown Pirate Football team (2-1 & 1-1 MSC), coming off last Saturday’s last second heart breaker versus Brownstown in the “Oil Can”, showed little sign of let down Friday night at Clarksville.  The Pirates, didn’t rebound, they took their emotional frustrations out on their next opponent….sorry Generals, for the eighth consecutive time; routing Clarksville 35-0 before cruising to a 49-28 conference win.  Generals fans were allowed their fun, and the Generals padded their stats; as Clarksville Coach Steve Cooley left his varsity in the entire game when Coach Ward pulled his starters, well before mid-way through the third.  Charlestown (who won the coin toss and deferred) struck pay-dirt on their first drive, and it only took two plays to march 61 yards.  Junior Syd Gieseking capped the drive with a 5 yard touchdown run.  The Pirates’ second drive took four plays, encompassed 61 yards and again was finished with a Gieseking 21 yard TD run.  Charlestown stopped the third General possession with a Junior Tate Boley interception of an attempted 21 yard Kissell (Cville QB) pass.  After a Pirate punt, the Generals fumbled on the Charlestown 30 yard line, recovered by Boley.  Sophomore Antonyo Gaddie ran over half the Clarksville team on the next play, rolling 82 yards for another Pirate touchdown to make it 21-zip.  The Generals punt on their next possession before the Pirates marched 60 yards in five plays, highlighted by a Gaddie 10 yard TD to push the score to 28-0 midway through the second.  Clarksville punts on their next drive before Senior QB Tristan Chester hit Senior Eli Daniel for a 67 yard touchdown strike, on the second play from scrimmage, to take a 35-0 halftime lead.  Gaddie opened the second by returning the kick-off 85 for a touchdown, however a Pirate penalty nullified the score.  Charlestown scored on their first drive of the second half after nine plays ended with a six yard touchdown pass from Chester to Sophomore Garrett Woods.  Clarksville (2-1 & 1-1 MSC) got on the board with six minutes remaining in the third, but failed on the ensuring conversion.  Charlestown responded two plays later, including a 49 yard Junior Jarren Anderson TD run to make the count 49-6.  Junior Kicker Jose Arredondo missed the school record of eight PAT’s in one game by when, kicking a perfect seven extra points during the game.  Clarksville scored three times against the Pirate reserves before attempting an on-side kick with seconds remaining in the game.  Pirate QB Tristan Chester finished 8 for 11 for 126 yards and two TDs and was named the Offensive Player of the Game.  Kyle Flowers, who finished the game with 12 tackles, was named the Defensive Player of the Game.  Charlestown opens home play Friday, hosting North Harrison (1-2) in the Bone Yard.

CHS C-team lost 8-25, 13-25 / CHS JV lost 5-25, 13-25 / CHS Varsity lost 6-25, 7-25, 6-25

Coach Nuxoll:  We really didn’t show up to play tonight, and you cannot do that with a team like Silver Creek. Silver Creek has a good team, and I was hoping that we would make them earn a win. We really struggled passing tonight at the JV and the Varsity level. When our passing wasn’t working, we got frustrated and started to hang our heads. We have got to learn that we can make mistakes, but still communicate and play as a team. On a positive note, our Cteam played Silver Creek last week and scored more points against them this week. Brooke Bowling showed hustle while Hannah Vincent passed well in the second set. Tyrah Martin got a block and two service aces to give the JV a tiny spark in the second JV set.

Lady Pirates Place 6th at Cougar Classic, Three Medal!

Cross Country

IMG_1427.JPGThe Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country teams competed in North Harrison’s annual Cougar Classic Thursday evening; among at least twenty other schools and over 400 runners.  The Lady Pirates finished in 6th place as a team, with three runners earning medal finishes.  Whitney Andrews finished 20th, Katie Rhodes 23rd, and Gabi Gagnon in 26th place; again against hundreds of runners.  The Charlestown Lady Pirates, as a team, were only beaten out of first place by Jasper, Bedford-North Lawerence, North Harrison and New Albany.  Head Coach Jerry Doyle stated “I couldn’t be more proud of the hard work these ladies are putting in!”

Cross Country will be in action again next Tuesday in the Scottsburg Invitational; and will be fund raising for their program this Saturday with a Yard Sale and Bake Sale at the Charlestown High School parking lot from 9am to 2pm, and a Car Wash at the Charlestown Firehouse on Park St from 11am to 2pm.  For more information about Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country, log on to www.PiratePride.BLUE/CrossCountry.

Dr. Melin Listening Session, PP Meeting Monday

SuperMelinGreater Clark County Schools Superintendent Dr. Andrew Melin, will host a Listening Session in the Charlestown High School Media Center (Library); this coming Monday, September 8th, from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.  Everyone in the community, especially those with students in the Charlestown area schools, are welcomed and encouraged to attend and get answers to education related questions or topics on their mind.

Pirate Pride will hold their September Business Meeting thirty minutes after Dr. Melin’s Listening Session, beginning at 6:30 pm, also in the CHS Media Center.

Charlestown’s Adam Hoff Name Athlete of the Year

The Charlestown High School Athletic Department is proud to announce that 2014 graduate Adam Hoff; has been named the 2014 Republic Bank Male Athlete of the Year by Vype Magazine.  Each year, one boy and onathAdamNov2013e girl are selected from among the Athletes of the Month to be named Athletes of the Year.  These students are each awarded a $1,000 college scholarship.  This year’s winners have not only achieved exceptional success in athletics and academics, but have demonstrated leadership both on and off the playing field and shown personal initiative in community service.

The football, swimming, track & field and wrestling teams have all counted Adam a member during his high school career, and he served as captain for football and wrestling. A four-year football player, Adam was named 2013 Indianapolis Colts/Ivy Tech Scholar Athlete of the Year, received the 2013 Team 110% award and was named to the 2013 All Conference Team. In wrestling, he was the 2011 Conference Champion and Regional Qualifier in the 170 lb. weight class. Adam was a member of Key Club, National Honor Society, Student Council and Earthwise, a school recycling group. He was vice president of Students Against Destructive Decisions and volunteers for Hosparus and youth football. He enjoys reading, hunting, fishing, archery and target shooting. “He does an excellent job of helping to create an urgency for excellence in everyone he is around,” says Melissa Stewart, his teacher and nominator.

This marks the second consecutive year that a Charlestown High School Athletics has been named Vype Magazine’s Athlete of the Year, as Aaron Daniel was awarded the same honor in 2013.
