Charlestown stayed on the winning side of the scoreboard Thursday evening with a 69-63 conference victory at Austin (5-11 & 1-6 MSC).  The Pirates (7-10 & 2-4 MSC) led the Eagles 29-21, then 48-40 enroute to the win behind Jamal Long’s game high 23 points.  Senior Eli Daniel finished with 18 and Korey Harris 12 respectively.  The Pirates return to action Saturday evening at home versus the Corydon Panthers.  The JV game tips at 6:00 pm with the Varsity scheduled for tip at approximately 7:30 pm.  Saturday’s game will also see the program honor the 40th Anniversary of the 1975 Charlestown Pirate Sectional Championship team.

The Pirate Basketball team improved to 6-10 on the season by traveling to Borden (10-6) on Saturday evening and picking up a non-conference win 46-42 in overtime.  “We played a great game defensively….and in overtime, we battled and kept our composure.  I’m proud of our guys” commented Coach Jason Connell after the game.  Tristan Chester led the Pirate scorebook, finishing with 14 points.    Korey Harris and Tanner Wesp each added eight points respectively for the Pirates.  The win ended a three game skid for Charlestown with their next contest on the road at Austin, Thursday February 5th.

Mark your calendar’s Pirate Nation!  Saturday, February 7th, 2015, Charlestown High School Athletic Department marks the victorious occasion of the 1975 Pirates Championship teams’ return to court side along with their venerable Coach John E. Wood to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in capturing the first Madison Sectional Tournament for the high school.
Gearing up for the celebratory affair will be talented hoops players that made it happen for coach Wood: Clark Bottorff, John Denney, Danny Gregory, Tony Hall, Jerry Johnson, John Jones, Jim Knight, Kem Martin, Mark Moore and Billy Smith. They were the elite mechanism that brought home the Pirates first sectional crown at Madison.
Two members from that marvelous team that contributed so much to the winning success are no longer with us. They are iconic Pirate athletes, Perry Buckner and Rick Hogue, whom made their versatile presence known on the hardwood.
Coach John E. Wood and the 1975 Pirates will be recognized before the start of the Pirates clash with MSC rival the Corydon Central Panthers.
The Charlestown High School Pirates basketball program will celebrate 100 years of hoops action in 2017, and the return of these excellent athletes to their alma mater presents only the second in a series of special Pirate tributes to other extraordinary coaches, players and teams, and their incredible moments on the hardwood.

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team used a 37-9 second half scoring advantage to upset Christian Academy on their home floor Saturday evening.  The loss is the Warrior’s 4th of the season, as they dropped to 13-4; after coming into the contest against Charlestown favored by a dozen points.  Christian Academy, currently ranked fifth in 1A, defeated Jeffersonville 60-33 on December 27th and fell to Bloomington North by one in overtime on December 30th.  The Pirates (5-7) led the Warriors 31-17 at halftime.  “We ran our offense so well, our defensive rebounding was excellent”, commented a proud Coach Jason Connell.  Junior Jamal Long, who averages 10 points per game, led all scorers with 22 points, Tristan Chester added 13 and Lex Smith 12 for the winning Pirates.  Charlestown is back in action on Tuesday in the CHS Sports Arena, hosting 4A #8 New Albany.  Pirate Nation, come out and support your Pirates, as they continue to improve.

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team traveled to Seymour Thursday evening for an out of conference contest versus the Seymour Owls (4-7).  The Pirates trailed the majority of the game; and by as much as twelve points before rallying in the fourth to cut the deficit to two with two minutes remaining.  Then the opportunities ended as the Pirates fell 52-49 to drop to 4-6 on the season.  Jamal Long lead the Pirate scoring with 14, and was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game by CPPSB.  Korey Harris finished the game with 10 points and Tristan Chester added nine.  Charlestown is back in action Tuesday at Rock Creek Academy.

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team opened Silver Creek Holiday Tourney play Monday evening with a 65-47 drumming of Clarksville.  The win moved the Pirates to 4-3 on the season and the right to face #7 and host Creek Tuesday evening in the tourney Championship game.  Silver Creek dispatched Providence Monday evening in game one, 55-32, pitting the last four winners of the Holiday Tourney (Providence and Clarksville) against each other in Tuesday’s 6:00 pm Consolation Game.  The Pirates jumped out to a 17-9 first quarter lead before posting a 28-17 score at the break.  Charlestown was led by Jamal Long’s 12, and eight points scored respectively by Lex Smith and Gage Martin.  Charlestown and Silver Creek tip in the Holiday Tourney final, Tuesday night at approximately 7:30 pm.  The two schools have not met in the final since 2009, which is also the last time the host Dragons won the tourney.  Listen to Tuesday’s final on Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting, at www.CPPSB.com or on your mobile device using the free CPPSB app.  Silver Creek Holiday Tourney History can be found at www.PiratePride.blue/boysbasketball.

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team (3-2 & 1-2 MSC) traveled to Clarksville Friday night and secured their first conference victory 54-40.  The Pirates led at the half 23-19 before expanding their lead by games end.  Hunter Crace led the scoring attack for the Pirates, finishing with 13 points.  Tristan Chester and Korey Harris added 9 points each respectively for the winning cause.  Charlestown returns to action next Saturday when they host Providence in the CHS Sports Arena.
