Pirate Soccer Hangs Tough with Southern

Wednesday evening, the Pirate Soccer team hosted Louisville Southern High School at Dutch Reis Field, falling 2-6 to cap a very busy game week for Charlestown.  “Southern High School is another strong team we had to face for game three of three this week.  They were very skilled to say the least”, commented Pirate Head Coach Christian Martinez.  Bryce Wray scored the first Pirate goal at the 32 minute mark on an assist from Andrew Mattingly, and the second Pirate of the game came at the three minute mark of the second half by Andrew Mattingly.  “Even though we lost our game, the Pirates played from their hearts.  Unfortunately, two of the starter players were unable to play and that left the team with less subs.  That is definitely not what cost us the game, though.  All the boys played the best I have seen so far this season and I am so very happy with the effort and teamwork I have witnessed. I am sure the Pirates are tired after three tough games in a row, and I hope they are able to get good rest over the next few days”, concluded Coach Martinez.

The night ended with the Pirates taking 6 shots, which 2 were on goal with Southern taking 20 shots, with 15 on goal. Pirate Goalie Matt Parrella finished with 9 saves and 6 allowed.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Tops Henryville in the Arena

For the first time in over five years, the Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team earned a Varsity victory Wednesday evening hosting the Henryville Hornets.  The Lady Pirates improved to 4-2 by defeating Henryville (3-1) 25-16, 25-22, 14-25, 25-14.  “Tonight was a good win for us.  It is the first time we have beaten Henryville since I have been coaching at Charlestown. We started off strong in the first set and were able to capitalize on some Henryville errors. Henryville came back stronger and had fewer errors in the second set, but we were able to keep our
lead.  We were out hustled in the third set.  Henryville made some really great plays on defense and put the ball in strategic positions on our side of the court that we just weren’t focused or prepared for. We got back on track in the fourth set and played hard from the start. We were able to get a good lead and keep it. I was proud of the way we handled the final set”, summarized Charlestown Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The Charlestown offense was led by Freshman Kayleigh Smith; who had 10 kills on the night.  Senior Maddie Nuxoll
contributed 20 assists and 19 digs.  Senior Molly Braunecker led the defense with 20
digs while Senior Chrissa Ledbetter added nineteen digs.  “We will have to come
back mentally prepared to play a tough Madison team Thursday” concluded Coach Nuxoll.

The Charlestown Junior Varsity squad had a tougher time with Henryville, losing their first match of the season 0-2 (18-25, 17-25).

Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball improved to 3-2 on the young season after dispatching the Mustangs 3-0 Tuesday evening in New Washington.  Charlestown won 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 in what were largely contested sets throughout the match.  “Playing New Washington is always a good game because of the rivalry between schools.  We did a good job tonight of getting an early lead and keeping it despite point surges by New Washington.  We had a pretty good serving game which kept New Washington from running a faster offense.  I like how we stayed focused and were able to win in three” summarized lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Senior Kaia Reid started the first set with strong hittin, finishing the first set with five kills before  ending the match with eleven total kills.  Senior Maddie Nuxoll helped the offense with twenty assists; while Senior Chrissa Ledbetter led the defense with 12 digs.  Nuxoll also contributed ten digs on defense.

Pirate Soccer Falls to Corydon 5-1 in MSC Opener

The Pirate Soccer team traveled to Corydon for their conference opener Tuesday evening, and second of a three in a row stretch this week.  “Tonight, we lost our first game of the season, against Corydon 5-1, and they proved to be a very strong team”, commented Pirate Coach Christian Martinez.  The Pirates scored an early goal at the 1 minute mark by Sergio Bolanos with an assist from Bryce Wray.  “I got the impression that the Pirates became overconfident at that point.  We lost our positions in the field, allowing Corydon to win”, explained Coach Martinez.  Corydon tacted on two more goals in the first half to take a 3-1 lead to halftime.

“During half time, we had our normal discussion about the errors made in the first half and how to improve in the second half.  However, it just didn’t work out this time.  We continued to make the same errors, which cost us two more goals”, stated Coach Martinez.

After a post-game discussion with the team, “I feel they understand the areas that were not as strong tonight and know what they can do to improve.  I continue to be proud of this group and there was a lesson to be learned tonight. You win some, and you lose some.  I will never be disappointed when they try so hard”, Coach concluded.

The night ended with the Pirates taking 12 shots, which 6 were on goal with Corydon taking 20 shots, with 11 on goal. Our goalie Matt Parrella had 6 saves and 5 allowed.
