Lady Pirates Advance with 3-0 Sweep of Salem

SectionalVBThe Charlestown High School Lady Pirate Volleyball team (21-9) advanced to Saturday’s Class 3A Sectional #30 Semi-Final round by dispatching Salem 28-26, 25-21, & 25-17 Tuesday evening at Silver Creek.  “I am happy that we were able to get a round one win under our belt.  This is the first post season win since I took over the program five years ago, so I am proud of our program.  We did not play our best tonight, but I’m glad we were able to stay composed when Salem came back to make the matches close in the first and second sets.  Salem’s #10 (Brown) gave our passers trouble with her serve, and Salem was able to cut into some large leads that we had, but we continued to hang on for the wins. We are still battling with a few injuries, so I’m hoping not playing again until Saturday will help us have more time to heal,” summarized Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Charlestown’s offense was led by Kaia Reid, who finished the game with 11 kills; and Fresham Kayleigh Smith who had 9 kills on the night.  Senior Maddie Nuxoll contributed 30 assists and 15 service points.  The defense was led by Senior Chrissa Ledbetter’s 17 digs; while Seniors Molly Braunecker and Hannah Vincent added 12 digs each respectively.  “We will have to put it all together and play our best in the next round against Brownstown”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  Charlestown and Brownstown, who drew the sectional bye, will clash in Saturday’s 11:00 am Semi-Final game at Silver Creek High School.  If you can make it to the game, you can listen to it live at www.CPPSB.com.  Photo courtesy of Michael Thibideau.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Defends Invitational Reign at New Wash

LADYPIRATEvbNWInviteFor the second consecutive year, the Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team wins the New Washington Invitational.  The Lady Pirate Varsity squad swept Switzerland County (25-19, 25-11), Clarksville (25-19, 25-21), and New Washington (25-23, 25-18) to successfully repeat; while the Junior Varsity squad, for the second time in three seasons, also took first place in the New Washington Invitational.  Saturday’s three wins, improves the varsity’s regular season record to 20-9; bettering last season’s 18-11 regular season mark.  The Junior Varisty defeated host New Washington 25-6, 25-5 to earn their trophy.  “I’m super proud of the Lady Pirates today, with both the JV and Varsity bringing home tournament championships at the New Washington Invitational.  We were without one of our starting middles and had a few others not at 100% today, so I’m really proud of how everyone stepped up and contributed to the wins.  Overall, our passing was pretty solid which allowed our hitters to take good swings at the ball.  Everyone had big plays when needed to help us win matches.  This is a selfless team who has done a great job of encouraging each other and that definitely was seen today”, summarized a proud Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The Lady Pirates logged a very balanced offensive attack Saturday, with each hitter making big plays when needed.  Senior Kaia Reid led the team with 26 kills and five service aces; Freshman Kayleigh Smith had 22 kills; Sophomore Hannah Thibideau contributed 17 kills and four blocks; and Sophomore Korea Tutt finished with 8 kills on the day.   Senior Maddie Nuxoll helped the offense with 62 assists.  The Charlestown defense had a good day, especially during the closest set of the day, the second against New Washington, “Sidney Goedeker made some great defensive plays to help us stay in the match”, added Coach Nuxoll.  Senior Sidney ended up with 15 digs.  Senior Chrissa Ledbetter led the defense with 28 digs, Senior Molly Braunecker had 22 digs and five service aces; while Maddie Nuxoll contributed 17 digs.  Senior Hannah Vincent also had 15 digs; while Senior Sam Crace added 12 digs.  “This was a total team effort and just what we needed leading into Sectionals on Tuesday against Salem”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  Lady Pirate Volleyball will play Salem to open Sectional play at Silver Creek, Tuesday at 7:00 pm.  The Lady Pirates deserve a big crowd making the short trip Tuesday to help cheer them on; however if you absolutely can’t make it, Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting will cover Tuesday’s game live beginning at 6:30 pm at www.CPPSB.com.

Lady Pirate XC are Sectional Runner ups, Three Pirates Advance

XCSectional2017Saturday the Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country team traveled to Hanover for the Sectional Round of the State Tournament.  The Lady Pirates, a strong favorite…..showed why, finishing runner-up to a very strong Jennings County team.  “We are excited to be heading to the Brown County Regional as a team! The ladies have worked hard all season, and continue to run well, as shown by the fact that we had four in the top 20, to receive All-Sectional honors!” commented Charlestown HS Head Coach Jerry Doyle.  The top four Lady Pirate finishers were Sophomore Carley Conway (3rd place/21:21.0), Senior Katie Rhodes (8th place/22:18.7), Sophomore Ashley Wight (10th  place/22:37.2), and Junior Alexis Gurr in 13th place/22:55.5.  The Lady Pirates scored 55 points, behind Jennings County’s 29, but better than Madison’s 73, and Silver Creek’s 136.  The Charlestown girls team will compete next Saturday at the Brown County Regional with high hopes of producing Semi-State qualifiers again.

The Pirates finished seventh as a team; however qualified three runners for next Saturday’s Regional meet.  Sophomore Josh McCoy finished 20th (18:22.3) and received Sectional Honors, Junior Drashaun Morrow finished 30th (19:26.2), and Junior Harrison Adams finished 35th (19:55.9).  “It was great having another year with a complete boys team, and I am looking forward to keep building on the foundation that has been laid, as we were a young team, with three freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors.  The future of Pirate and Lady Pirate XC looks bright in the years to come!”, summarized a proud Coach Doyle.

Pirate Soccer Falls to Courgars 2-1 in Sectional

The Charlestown Pirate Soccer team traveled back to Scottsburg Wednesday evening for a Sectional semi-final round match-up against the North Harrison Cougars.  “Today, we got were eliminated from sectionals, losing 2-1 against North Harrison. The Pirates showed a lot of character on the field and they played a perfect first half.  This is something they have not done all season”, commented Pirate Head Coach Christian Martinez.  The only Pirate goal came at the 17 minute mark of the first by Andrew Mattingly with an assist from Eric Sipes.  “The second half started really good, but a clear “off sides” that the referee didn’t’ call was the reason for NH to tie the game.  After that we held good on our lines, but unfortunately they scored another goal.  We kept trying to tie the game and had more opportunities to score, but it just didn’t happen.  I’m so proud of these boys for working so hard all the time! I want to thank the coaching staff – Mike, Franco, Russ, and especially Kimberly Wray for dealing with everything and supporting the team 100% which allowed us coaches to focus all of our effort on the boys. GO PIRATES!!” concluded Coach Martinez.  The Charlestown Goalie Matt Parrela had 3 saves and 2 allowed; as the Pirates had 18 shots and 8 on goal, while North Harrison had 8 shots with 5 on goal.

Lady Pirate Soccer Falls in Sectional 2-3

Charlestown Lady Pirates and Corydon played a hard fought MSC rematch in the first round of sectionals at Madison.

Both teams came out ready to play on this Tuesday evening; one looking to repeat their regular season win and the other looking for revenge. The Lady Pirates came out on top (2-1) during the regular season but couldn’t pull out the win in sectionals.

Charlestown had more shots on goal during the first half but only Corydon was able to put one of theirs away (25:11 Lilly Wolfe).

Charlestown scored first during the second half (19:40 Jessaca Rawson) but couldn’t hold on and allowed a second goal from Corydon just a minute and a half later (18:12 Gracie Paden). Coyrdon scored one more before the game was over (12:14 Gracen Lander).

Charlestown played hard down to the final minutes and scored a second goal with only 2 minutes remaining in the game (2:18 Ilayah Keltner).

Although the Lady Pirates pushed to the very last second, they couldn’t muster another goal and their season ended in the first round.

“I really thought we could come back there at the end. Something sparked a fire and we really looked like we wanted it. Unfortunately, we waited to long to kick it in gear and time wasn’t on our side. Both games we played against Corydon this year were well played on both sides of the field. Regardless of the score, I’m proud of the way these girls kept playing to the end of the game. I know it’s been a long season for my players, especially since we’ve been battling injuries and low numbers, but I’m thankful for the group of girls that came out this season and the effort they gave me. It’s been a fun season and I look forward to next year.

Pirate Soccer Defeats Scottsburg and Advances

PirateSoccer2017SectionalCharlestown Pirate Soccer, after trailing 2-0 at the half, defeats host Scottsburg 5-3 in the Class 2A Boys Soccer Sectional.  “We had a good comeback win against Scottsburg.  The Pirates had a horrible first half, making lots of mistakes on the midfield and defense lines and not keeping possession of the ball. We ended the 1st half with 2 goals against us. During half time, the assistant coaches, Mike and Franco, and I discussed what we could change for the 2nd half.  Luckily, it worked!  Even though Scottsburg scored 1 more goal at the beginning of the second half, we tied the game and then scored 2 more goals and ultimately won 5-3.  I’m so proud of this team and the coaching staff.  Everyone will rest tomorrow to be ready for our next game against North Harrison on Wednesday,” commented Pirate Head Coach Christian Martinez.

Charlestown’s first goal came at the 7:33 minute in the second half when Sergio Bolanos scored on an assist from Anthony Carey.  Demetrio Ortuno scored (assist by Bryson Andasol) shortly after and the rally was on.  Sergio Bolanos, assisted by Andrew Mattingly, scored twice to take the lead with just under six to remain.  Ian Flora sealed the deal for the Pirates with another goal, assist by Sergio Bolanos, with just under four remaining.  Pirate Goalie Matt Parrela had 8 saves with 3 allowed; as Charlestown had 15 shots, 13 on goal versus Scottsburg’s 14 shots, and 11 on goal.

The Pirates’ win advances them to Wednesday’s Sectional Semi-Final round versus North Harrison.  The game will begin at 5:30 pm at Scottsburg High School.  The above photo captures the team applauding Pirate fans in attendance for their support during the rally.

Lady Pirates Finish 2nd at MSC, Pirates 8th

Cross Country

The Charlestown HS Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country team traveled to Pekin Saturday morning for the annual Mid-Southern Conference Championship meet.  The Lady Pirates, among the favorites to win conference this year finished runner-up; however placed four runners within the honors of All-Conference and Honorable Mention.  The Pirates finished eighth as a team and saw Josh McCoy finish All-Conference and in a time the placed in the CHS Recordbook Top Thirty.  “It was a perfect day for running, however we came up just a little short, to a very strong Corydon girls team! We talked before the race about leaving it all on the course, and our Lady Pirates did just that! We had a couple of ladies set personal records on a very tough course. As a coach, that is all I can ask for, and for that, I am extremely proud of our team! Carley Conway and Ashley Wight received all conference recognition by placing 4th and 9th respectively. Receiving honorable mention was Katie Rhodes in 15th and Skylar Cochran in 16th. Finishing conference runner-up is a great accomplishment as we continue to improve year after year and build the program! We now look forward to next Saturday as we will compete in sectional at Hanover. For the boys, we finished 8th with a very young team. The highlight of the day was Josh McCoy breaking into the All-Time top 30 at Charlestown, as he is in the record book tied at 24th by running 17:56! I look for great things from Josh in the coming years! The guys continue to work hard, and have a desire to grow and improve. I am excited about the future of Pirate and Lady Pirate XC , as we have some very strong talent coming up through the elementary and middle school ranks!”, summarized Pirate Head Coach Jerry Doyle.
