CBDL Hosting a Coaches Clinic October 22nd

The Charlestown Basketball Developmental League (CBDL) will host a FREE Basketball Coaching Clinic on Wednesday, October 22nd, from 6-830 PM, at the Charlestown High School.  This purpose of this clinic is to help develop all of the basketball players among our community teams ; Schools (Elementary, Middle, High), CBDL, Travel Teams (CYP, CYLP) and our players that are in AAU programs.

Organizers are encouraging all current coaches to attend (all levels), with an open invitation to anyone that might be interested to coach down the line.  This may be an opportunity for some prospective coaches to learn a little bit more before they jump into coaching the game, especially if they are sitting on the fence.  This coaching clinic will include on-court demonstrations with local players; while performing some of the drills and skills that many of our current coaches use.  Diagrams for participants to take notes on along with time for questions and answers will coaches will be made available.  Currently all high school and middle school coaches have been asked to lead the before mentioned demonstrations, and Coach Gilbert will be conducting a presentation at the clinic.

Rhodes Wins at Providence, Lady Pirates 3rd

ProvidenceInvitXC2014The Charlestown HS Cross Country team ran at New Albany’s Community Park Tuesday evening, in the annual Providence Invitational.  Frosh Katie Rhodes led the Lady Pirates and was the individual girls champion; for her second win of the year!  Senior Whitney Andrews ran 4th and Gabi Gagnon 13th to round out the Lady Pirate medal winners!  The Lady Pirates placed 3rd as a team; even without their #3 runner Alysha Flaget, who was under the weather.  “Had Alysha been available it would have definitely been a different (team) outcome, but we want her ready for sectional on Saturday” commented Coach Jerry Doyle.  The Pirate Cross Country team was led by Seth Parker, who medaled by placing 13th during the race.  “I’m looking forward to Sectional and qualifying for another Regional as a team”, concluded Coach Doyle after Tuesday’s outing.

Fall Sport Sectional Information

Pirate Nation several fall sports are preparing for Sectional play, and so should you….here the 411 you need to know.  Boys Tennis and Girls Golf Sectional play has ended, and unfortunately Charlestown teams did not advance.

Pirate Soccer will be begin Sectional #27 play at Columbus East High School on Wednesday, October 8th versus Scottsburg with a 5:30 pm start.

Lady Pirate Soccer will begin Sectional #27 play at Columbus North High School on Thursday, October 9th (7:00 pm start) versus the winner of tonight’s Scottsburg/Coumbus East winner.

Pirate & Lady Pirate Cross Country will compete in Sectional #28 in Hanover (hosted by Southwestern HS) on Saturday, October 11th beginning at 10:30 am.

Pirate Football will compete in Class 3A Sectional #31 beginning Friday, October 24th.  The blind draw for the eight team sectional will be announced on Sunday, October 12th, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Lady Pirate Volleyball will host the Class 3A Sectional #30 beginning on Tuesday, October 21st in the CHS Sports Arena.  The blind draw for the eight team sectional will be announced on Monday, October 13th, beginning at 8:00 am.

Cross Country Competes in MSC Meet

AndrewsRhodesMSCThe Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country team met at Hardy Lake in Scott County, with Mid-Southern Conference counterparts, to decide and settle the final 2014 conference standings for boys and the girls in their sport.  The Lady Pirates (as a team) finished fourth behind Salem (3rd), North Harrison (2nd) and Silver Creek.  Senior Whitney Andrews was the top Charlestown runner of the day, finishing 7th while Freshman Katie Rhodes followed closely in 9th place.  Andrews and Rhodes, based on their respective finishes, qualified for All Conference Honors.  Rounding out the Lady Pirate results, Alysha Flaget finished 20th, Gabi Gagnon 22nd, and Erin Kimbrell 25th.  “It’s good to see Whitney Andrews getting back to form after her heat exhaustion/dehydration episode at Seymour, and good to have Gabi Gagnon back running well even with severe tendinitis!  All of the ladies ran well today in the cooler weather, with junior Molly Sumner running a personal best today” commented Head Coach Jerry Doyle.

The Pirate (boys) team did not fair as well during the outing, however Coach Doyle stated that he is “proud of the effort that the guys gave today in the cold temps, and with some very good runners in our conference.  I’m excited for next season when we can field a complete team, especially with 2 freshmen and 2 sophomores this year!”  Seth Parker did finish his MSC run in a time of 18:44, after breaking into the record book on Tuesday.

Pirates Ganged Up On, but Survive at Corydon 13-6

ChesterGaddieCharlestown has gotten the best of Corydon over their eleven football meetings, 9-2 counting Friday nights win; however sometimes the vacuum of outside forces ruins a good rivalry game, like Friday night at Corydon.  The Pirates were penalized eleven times, totaling 125 yards; while Corydon was penalized eight times for 62 yards….but no one had control of the game-especially the officials.  Words wouldn’t justify the impact the officials had upon the “game”…so enough about the ugly-here’s the good and the bad.  Charlestown scored first, on their second drive of the game, when Garrett Woods caught a 37 yard TD pass from QB Tristan Chester to cap a five play 71 yard drive.  Jose Arredondo added the point after to make it a 7-0 advantage, which lasted until 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Wind driven rain and falling temperatures complicated field footing and the passing offense of both teams.  A bad Corydon fourth quarter punt set the Pirate offense up on the Panther 25 yard line when Chester went to work again, hitting Cameron Hopson for an apparent 25 yard touchdown pass; but it was overruled as Hopson was called down on the three yard line-even though he caught the ball at the two yard line and back stepped into the end zone.  Chester run the ball in for a touchdown on the next play, however the two point conversion attempt failed.  Corydon (5-2 & 4-1 MSC) scored on their next drive, greatly assisted by three unexplained unsportsman-like conduct flags against the Pirates.  “Unexplained” in this situation should be defined as the officials unwilling to explain the penalty circumstances to Charlestown coaches.  The Panthers attempted a two point conversion run, which was snuffed behind the line of scrimmage by the Pirates…..Charlestown 13-Corydon 6 with 4:54 remaining.  The Pirates recovered the Panthers ensuing on-side kick and were able to run the clock out to end the game.  Charlestown finished the game with a balanced 237 total yards of offense (132 on the ground  and 105 in the air); while holding the Panthers to 198 total yards of offense (162 on the ground).  Antonyo Gaddie’s returning (from injury) numbers finalized with 103 yards on 25 carries.  Garrett Woods finished with four catches totaling 64 yards.  The Pirates (6-1 & 5-1 MSC) return home next Friday to host Providence on Senior Night in the Bone Yard.

2005 Lady Pirate Champions to be Honored

LadyPirateBasketball2005anniversaryLogoThe Charlestown High School Athletic Department and Charlestown Girls Basketball Team will honor one of the great teams in school history, Tuesday night, November 25th,  during the home Girls Basketball game versus New Washington.  The 2004-2005 Lady Pirate team, that was led by former Head Coach Tony Hall, had a record of 21-6 that year and won the Holiday Tournament, along with Sectional and Regional Crowns.  Former coaches, players, and managers of that historic team will be honored, during the course of the evening games.  There will also be a meal provided for each of the members of that team and their families.  So please come out and support these great group of former players and coaches, share some great memories and cheer on the current Lady Pirates as they play one of their biggest rivals the New Washington Lady Mustangs. The JV game starts at 6pm and the Varsity Game Starts at 730.

Hopson & Parker Enter CHS Recordbook

SethParkerNewPirate Football’s Senior wide receiver Cameron Hopson and Pirate Cross Country’s Sophomore runner Seth Parker; both after big performances over the past two weeks, have earned spots in the Charlestown High School Recordbook.

Parker, while running a personal best time of 18:11 in Tuesday’s New Washingtion Invitational, landed on the CHS All-Time Top Thirty 5k Runners list in the Recordbook.

Hopson, while catching three touchdowns during Pirate Football’s CameronHopsonNEWwin at Salem last Friday, tied Charlestown’s existing record for Most TD Receptions in a Game; also held by Joe Crank versus Floyd Central in 1979.

Congratulations to both Cameron Hopson and Seth Parker for their outstanding work in competition; while leaving their record-setting mark in Charlestown Pirate Athletics.
