Pirate Grapplers Repeat at So. IN. Wrestling Conference Tourney

The Pirate WreSIWCstling team won their second straight SIWC (Southern Indiana Wrestling Conference) tournament Saturday at Southwestern High School.  Bryant Haynes and Zach Higdon each were individual champions in their respective weight classes.  Tanner Smith had a 2nd place finish.  Darian Zies, Cameron Hopson, Tyler Olsen, and Brady Christman each finished with 3rd place finishes.  Jordan Combs finished 4th and Kody Hartman placed 6th.  The Pirates edged Scottsburg in a 13 team tournament to take the title.  Bryant Haynes was named outstanding wrestler for the
tournament.

Long and the Pirates Upset Academy 68-28

jamalLong142The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team used a 37-9 second half scoring advantage to upset Christian Academy on their home floor Saturday evening.  The loss is the Warrior’s 4th of the season, as they dropped to 13-4; after coming into the contest against Charlestown favored by a dozen points.  Christian Academy, currently ranked fifth in 1A, defeated Jeffersonville 60-33 on December 27th and fell to Bloomington North by one in overtime on December 30th.  The Pirates (5-7) led the Warriors 31-17 at halftime.  “We ran our offense so well, our defensive rebounding was excellent”, commented a proud Coach Jason Connell.  Junior Jamal Long, who averages 10 points per game, led all scorers with 22 points, Tristan Chester added 13 and Lex Smith 12 for the winning Pirates.  Charlestown is back in action on Tuesday in the CHS Sports Arena, hosting 4A #8 New Albany.  Pirate Nation, come out and support your Pirates, as they continue to improve.

Lady Pirates Snap Eastern Streak, 49-36

LexiLogsdonBBThe Charlestown Lady Pirates hosted the Eastern Lady Musketeers Tuesday evening in a critical MSC game in the CHS Sports Arena.  Eastern was riding an eight game winning streak entering the game.  The Lady Pirates struggled offensively the majority of the game; but defensively made it happen with a 49-36 win to improve their record to 14-2 (5-1 MSC).  After building a 30-21 halftime advantage, Charlestown came into the second half stepping up the defensive pressure, turning 18 visitor turnovers into high percentage offense.  Eastern’s (11-5 & 4-2 MSC) floor general found herself in foul trouble, about the same time in the fourth Justice Burdin did; however the Lady Pirates used a ten point lead to milk some time.  Shelby Goedeker drained a three pointer with just under two minutes remaining to seal the victory.  The Lady Pirates were led in scoring by Kaitlynn Henning’s 14 points and Justice Burdin’s ten.  Lexi Logsdon finished with 9 points, however consistently put herself in situations to help her team; earning her the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC, and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game.  Shelby Goedeker also finished with nine points while also battling foul trouble.  Charlestown is back on the road Friday at Providence for a non-conference showdown with the Lady Pioneers.

Lady Pirates Fall to Brownstown in MSC Showdown

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Basketball team suffered through some cold shooting difficulties at home, falling to the Brownstown Lady Braves for the MSC lead 57-52.  The Lady Pirates were led in scoring by Kaitlynn Henning (18), Justice Burdin (15), Bethany Hall (7), and Shelby Goedeker (5).  Charlestown 13-2 is next in action Tuesday evening when hosting Eastern-Pekin (4-1 MSC) in the CHS Sports Arena.  TUESDAY’S GAME HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS A PINK OUT GAME, IN HONOR OF CANCER RESEARCH, SURVIVORS AND VICTIMS.

Pirates’ Late Surge Comes Up Short at Seymour

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team traveled to Seymour Thursday evening for an out of conference contest versus the Seymour Owls (4-7).  The Pirates trailed the majority of the game; and by as much as twelve points before rallying in the fourth to cut the deficit to two with two minutes remaining.  Then the opportunities ended as the Pirates fell 52-49 to drop to 4-6 on the season.  Jamal Long lead the Pirate scoring with 14, and was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game by CPPSB.  Korey Harris finished the game with 10 points and Tristan Chester added nine.  Charlestown is back in action Tuesday at Rock Creek Academy.

Lady Pirates Fight Back to Beat Jeff 46-44

Henning14The Charlestown Lady Pirate Basketball team won their fifth straight and improved to 13-1 over all this season by defeating rival Jeffersonville (9-7) Thursday evening in the CHS Sports Arena.  The Lady Pirates, led in scoring by Senior Kaitlynn Henning’s 18 points and Justin Burdin’s 14, led 9-3 at the end of the first quarter; however trailed the Lady Red Devils 23-18 at the midway point.  Shelby Goedeker finished the game with six points, while Lexi Logsdon and Bethany Hall both added three points each respectively.  “They never gave up….They played to the final buzzer”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Mike Prichard about the contest.  The game served as a warm-up for Saturday’s MSC Showdown versus Brownstown (12-3 & 5-0 MSC), which is scheduled to tip off beginning at noon in the CHS Sports Arena.  The varsity game will be broadcasted live by Charlestown Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting beginning at approximately 1:30 pm on www.CPPSB.com.

Lady Pirates Pummel Rock Creek 108-21

The Charlestown Lady Pirates moved to 12-1 on the season with a 108-21 win over visiting Rock Creek Academy (4-11) in the CHS Sports Arena Tuesday evening.  Charlestown jumped out to a 26-5 first quarter lead before stretching it to a 62-7 halftime advantage before posting the victory.  The Lady Pirate starters accounted for 68 total points, lead by Justice Burdin’s 20 points, Lexi Logsdon’s 18, and Kaitlynn Henning’s 16.  The Lady Pirate reserves scored the remaining 40 points of the winning score.  Freshmen Erin Kimbrell (14), Bri Harvey (12), and Gabi Gagnon (8) combined for 34 points as even the Lady Pirate reserves were much more than the visiting team could handle.  Charlestown will host Jeffersonville (9-6) on Thursday evening, and Brownstown (12-3) on Saturday afternoon (1:30 pm) in a huge conference showdown.
