Lady Pirate Volleyball Weekend News and Notes

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team (2-2 & 1-1 MSC) hosted conference rivals Clarksville and Brownstown in the CHS Sports Arena Saturday morning.  Both Charlestown matches were broadcasted live and archived by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting.  Charlestown started the tri-match action by matching up with Clarksville, a team the program hadn’t defeated but once in the past decade.  Charlestown swept the visiting Lady Generals three to nil in the best of five match.  Final set scores recorded are 25-15, 25-13, and 25-12.  “This is my fourth year coaching at Charlestown and our match against Clarksville is the best I’ve ever had a team play.  Everyone was focused and contributed to the win.  When my players took control of the set, they did not let Clarksville back in.  I was proud with how they played with control and confidence”, summarized Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Notable Lady Pirate performances included Kaia Reid’s 10 kills, and Maddie Nuxoll’s 23 assists.  Emalee Craven recorded 5 blocks and Chrissa Ledbetter and Amelia McCoy did a great job passing; Ledbetter led the defense with 15 digs.  “This is the team we will strive to have on the floor every match”, added Coach Nuxoll.  Maddie Nuxoll was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC & Coyle Nissan Player of the Game.

Brownstown, ranked #8 in the state preseason poll, then dispatched Clarksville, 3-0 before clashing with the host Lady Pirates in game three.  Charlestown fell to Brownstown in three, 19-25, 15-25, and 9-25.  “Against Brownstown, we struggled to get an offense going.  We gave them too many free plays and with a good team like Brownstown we cannot afford to allow them to run their faster offense.  One of my middles was injured in the second set with a sprained ankle, and we couldn’t get get anything going for us n the third set”, commented Coach Nuxoll on the loss.  Kaia Reid finished the Brownstown match with 8 kills off the sets of Maddie Nuxoll, who had 13 assists.  Chrissa Ledbetter recorded 16 digs and was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC & Coyle Nissan Player of the Game.

The Lady Pirates will host New Washington Tuesday, travel to Henryville on Wednesday, and host Madison on Thursday; all matches begin at 6 pm (JV) with Varsity immediately following at approximately 7:30 pm.
