Pirate Cheerleader James Stacey Signs with Western Kentucky

In front of family, friends, and coaches, James Stacey recently signed his national letter of intent to continue his cheerleading endeavors at Western Kentucky University next year.

Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a city with a population of more than 60,000 approximately 110 miles south of Louisville and 65 miles north of Nashville, Western Kentucky’s hilltop campus is a place of beauty and friendliness.WKU’s undergraduate division offers one hundred one academic majors that lead to the baccalaureate degree and 111 academic minors are available. Nine associate degree programs are offered along with thirty-seven undergraduate certificate programs. 

The Western Kentucky athletic department sponsors 14 (6 men / 8 women) varsity sports, competing at the NCAA Division I level. Known as the Hilltoppers, Western Kentucky is a member of Conference USA, which enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU.

When asked about his future with the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers, James had this to say: “I’m very excited to cheer and attend Western Kentucky University where I will major in Computer Science. It’s going to be a memorable experience.”

Cheer coach Katelyn Maymon said, “The coaching staff is extremely proud of Jimmy’s decision to cheer for a collegiate program. We were blessed with the opportunity to coach him for his senior basketball cheer season, and during that time we loved his commitment to giving a 100% in stunting and tumbling! Flyers trusted his dedication and persistence to keep stunts in the air, and he persevered through training to achieve elite skills! Not to mention he is also a power house tumbler! Tumbling on the gym floor is not every cheerleader’s favorite task, but Jimmy was never afraid to perform elite skills to show off for the crowd. He is an amazing performer, an incredible athlete, and a great team player. We can’t wait to see what he accomplishes with the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky! ”

Pirate Cross Country Standout Alexis Gurr Signs to Run at Hanover College

In front of family, friends, and coaches on Thursday evening, Alexis Gurr signed her national letter of intent to continue her cross country endeavors at Hanover College next year.

Nestled in 650 acres of a wooded campus and located on the banks of the scenic Ohio River, Hanover College is a private, liberal arts institution where brains and beauty truly intersect. Their rigorous interdisciplinary academic program with 33 majors attracts the best and the brightest from across the region and beyond.

The Hanover College athletic department sponsors 20 (10 men / 10 women) varsity sports, competing at the NCAA Division III level. Known as the Panthers, Hanover College is a member of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, a conference comprised of institutions in Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio.

When asked about her future with the Hanover College Panthers, Alexis had this to say: “Hanover is a dream come true and to have the opportunity to continue my passion for running only makes it better.”

Cross Country coach Jerry Doyle said, “I’m proud of Alexi for pursuing her dream of running in college!  I’ve enjoyed having the privilege of coaching her for four years, and I know that she will be successful at the next level. I see her desire to improve, and I know with hard work, she will attain her goals.”

Pirate Baseball’s Brady Latham signs to play at Kentucky Wesleyan University

On Thursday evening, Brady Latham gathered with coaches, family, friends, and teammates to sign his national letter of intent to play baseball at Kentucky Wesleyan College during the 2019-20 season.

Kentucky Wesleyan College is located in Owensboro, Kentucky just 40 minutes east of Evansville, Indiana, 2 hours west of Louisville, Kentucky. KWC offers 29 majors and 13 pre-professional curriculums.

The Kentucky Wesleyan College athletic department sponsors 21 (11 men / 10 women) varsity sports, competing at the NCAA Division II level. Known as the Panthers, Kentucky Wesleyan is a founding member of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), a conference comprised of institutions in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and West Virginia. NCAA Division II operates on a partial-scholarship model, and athletic scholarships are awarded at Kentucky Wesleyan at the discretion of each head coach.

When asked about his opportunity to play at the next level with the Panthers, Brady said, “Being able to sign with Kentucky Wesleyan is a blessing. I’ve worked so hard to be where I am and for this opportunity to be presented to be is a dream come true. I’ve been through a lot in my athletic career and I couldn’t be any more thankful and appreciative for the support system that I have behind me especially with my parents. As soon as I went on my visit and met with Coach Lillpop, I fell in love with the school and the program.  I couldn’t be any happier where I am at this point in my life and I am very excited for the future to come. I am forever grateful to have all the people in my life that I do. So thank you all!”

Charlestown Pirate coach Ricky Romans said, “I couldn’t be more proud of Brady for the hard work the he has put in during his time with us. He has earned this opportunity and there is no doubt in my mind that he will succeed at Kentucky Wesleyan.  I look forward to watching him improve this year and contribute at the next level.”

Pirate Wrestling Advances 9 to Regional

The Charlestown Pirates wrestled at the Jeffersonville Sectional this past weekend. Twelve wrestlers participated, eleven made the podium, and nine qualified for the regional next Saturday, also to be held at Jeffersonville. Complete results are as follows:

Pirate Wrestlers Claim 6 MSC Weight Class Championships, 2nd Place Overall

The Pirate wrestling team took runners up at last week’s Mid Southern Conference championships at Eastern High School. The Pirates won in six weight classes, placed second in two, and 4th in two out of a total 14 weight classes, 6 total schools. Freshman Ben Phillips; Sophomores Deke Brown, Colin Knox, and Manuel Ordorica; and Seniors Sean Baker and Peyton Hamm all won conference, while Freshman Jakob Lewellen; Sophomore Lucas Gagnon; and Seniors Austin Cooper and Mark Sherrill all placed as runners up; and Freshmen Carlos Lozano and Jesse Wheeler placed 4th for the Pirates. Team results are as seen below:

Samantha Matthews Signs to Play at the University of Tampa

Recently Senior Lady Pirate Basketball player Samantha Matthews gathered with family and school officials to sign a letter of intent to attend and play women’s basketball at the University of Tampa.

Samantha stated that the day was a day she dreamed about since she was a child. She feels like Tampa is the best fit for her because on her visit, it felt like a place she could call “home.” She added that it was a strong school academically and feels she will fit in with the coaches.

During Samantha’s signing, shown seated at center, she was joined by her parents Paige Barrett and Scott Matthews (Lady Pirate Head Coach), seated on either side.  Samantha was also joined by her stepmother Candace Matthews (seated far right front row), her stepfather Jeff Barrett (seated far left front row).  Shown left to right standing and supporting Samantha are Lady Pirates Assistant Coach Jason Hawkins, sister Sloane Barrett, CHS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert, stepsisters Skylar Cochran and Alexis Finchum, and Cross Country Coach Jerry Doyle.  Congratulations to Samantha on her decision to play college basketball at the University of Tampa and best wishes for a successful education and career.
