Pirates Survive Double OT versus Salem, 79-71

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team hosted Salem for their regular season finale in the CHS Sports Arena Saturday night.  The pre-game festivities included honoring winter sport Seniors, the 1990 Pirate Basketball Sectional Championship team, and all military veterans in the house with a 50′ x 80′ American flag National flag.  The Pirates trailed the Lions 32-28 at halftime, but battled back in the second half to tie at 54 at the end of regulation.  Both teams tied at 59 after the end of the first overtime.  Jamal Long led Pirate scores with 23 points, Korey Harris and Gage Martin both finished with 15 points a piece, and Eli Daniel added 12 points.  The Pirate finish the regular season with a 10-12 record overall and 4-5 in MSC play.  The Pirates will begin Sectional play Wednesday versus host Corydon at 7:30 pm.

Pirates’ 1990 Sectional Champs Celebrate 25 Year Mark

1990BBBSectionalChampsIn 1990, Coach Allan Cundiff created one of the most phenomenal Pirates’ teams that have withstood time in the annals of hoops legacy at Charlestown High School.  And, on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the CHS Sports Arena, these extraordinary Pirates along with Coach Cundiff will be honored prior to the Mid-Southern Conference encounter between the host Pirates and the Salem Lions on their Silver Jubilee of winning the IHSAA Floyd Central Sectional tournament.

          The 1990 Pirates were led by outstanding players, Buster Bussey, Brad Crace, Jamie Denney, Scott Fellows, Will Fugate, Chad Gilbert, Tony Jarvoka, Marlon Jemerson, Ross Knecht, Kyle Lovan, Todd Satterly, John Smith and Hank Weedin. They ended their basketball campaign 21-3, with the most victories by any Charlestown squad. They were Silver Creek Holiday Champs, undefeated Mid-Southern Conference champions, Floyd Central sectional champions, and Seymour regional semi-finalists.

The 1990 Pirates’ impressive average span of wins was 22.3 points per game. The final coaches poll had them ranked 18th in the state, and in the final Associated Press Indiana High School Basketball Poll, the Pirates ranked 8th in the Hoosier State.

            The Charlestown High School Pirates boys’ basketball program will celebrate 100 years of hoops action in 2017, and the return of these exceptional athletes to their alma mater presents only the third in a series of special Pirate tributes to other extraordinary coaches, players and teams, and their incredible moments on the hardwood.  After the game, come and enjoy the memories with these powerhouse players and Coach Cundiff in the Hospitality Room at the CHS Sports Arena. Light refreshments will be served.

Indiana’s Boys Basketball Sectional Pairings Announced

The Charlestown Pirate Basketball program (9-11), learned their path to returning to the Sectional #30 Sectional Championship game Sunday evening.  The Class 3A Boys Basketball Sectional will be hosted this year by Corydon High School; Tuesday through Saturday, beginning March 3rd through March 7th.  Charlestown has drawn host Corydon (14-5) in their first round game in the second lower bracket game opposite of a game between Scottsburg (13-6) and North Harrison (6-14).  Charlestown and Corydon will tip off at approximately 7:30 pm on Wednesday, March 4th.  The upper half of the Sectional #30 bracket, games played on Tuesday evening at Corydon High School, includes Madison (11-8) vs. Salem (8-12) and Silver Creek (18-2) vs. Brownstown (15-3).  The Pirates will finish their regular season this week Monday night at New Washington, Tuesday night hosting Jeffersonville, and Saturday hsoting Salem.  Silver Creek is the defending Sectional #30 Sectional Champions.  Complete Boys Basketball Sectional pairings are available at http://www.maxpreps.com.

Pirates Top North Harrison on the Road, 75-57

jamalLong14aThe Charlestown Pirate Basketball team improved its record to 8-11 and 3-5 in the conference by wasting no time defeating the home standing Cougars in Ramsey Thursday evening.  North Harrison dropped to 5-14 under first year head coach Kevin Jones; while the victory gave the Pirates their fifth win in the last six match-ups with the Cougars.  “We got off to a great start because of our defense.  It was a great team win” commented Pirate Head Coach Jason Connell after the game.  The Pirates led the Cougars 26-9 at the end of the first, then 40-21 at the half.  Jamal Long, who averages twelve points a game, led the Pirate scorers Thursday night by finishing with 29.  Eli Daniel added 8 points, while Derek Walters, Lex Smith and Korey Harris all finished with seven points a piece, respectfully.  Charlestown used the quick start to cruise to a 75-57 victory by game’s end.  Charlestown is back in action Tuesday evening at New Washington.  The Pirates topped the Mustangs 69-39 in the season opener in the CHS Sports Arena.

Pirate Basketball gets road win at Austin 69-63

Charlestown stayed on the winning side of the scoreboard Thursday evening with a 69-63 conference victory at Austin (5-11 & 1-6 MSC).  The Pirates (7-10 & 2-4 MSC) led the Eagles 29-21, then 48-40 enroute to the win behind Jamal Long’s game high 23 points.  Senior Eli Daniel finished with 18 and Korey Harris 12 respectively.  The Pirates return to action Saturday evening at home versus the Corydon Panthers.  The JV game tips at 6:00 pm with the Varsity scheduled for tip at approximately 7:30 pm.  Saturday’s game will also see the program honor the 40th Anniversary of the 1975 Charlestown Pirate Sectional Championship team.

Pirates Edge Borden 46-42 on the Road

The Pirate Basketball team improved to 6-10 on the season by traveling to Borden (10-6) on Saturday evening and picking up a non-conference win 46-42 in overtime.  “We played a great game defensively….and in overtime, we battled and kept our composure.  I’m proud of our guys” commented Coach Jason Connell after the game.  Tristan Chester led the Pirate scorebook, finishing with 14 points.    Korey Harris and Tanner Wesp each added eight points respectively for the Pirates.  The win ended a three game skid for Charlestown with their next contest on the road at Austin, Thursday February 5th.
