CHS Student Council Releases 2020 Football Homecoming Information

Student Council would like to issue the following statement regarding homecoming week, September 28th through October 2nd:

The 2020 Charlestown High School football homecoming ceremony will be held at halftime of the varsity football game against Corydon on Friday, October 2nd. We would like to congratulate the following students on their selection to the homecoming court:
Freshmen–Anna Almeciga and Clay McClelland

Sophomores–Hailey Metzger, Tenley Schott, Malachi Rios, and Peyton Ward

Juniors–Shanyia Bryant, Raegan Grissom, Trinity Murphy, Eric Goedeker, Jakob Lewellen, and Connor Smith

Additionally, we would like to wish good luck to those seniors who are candidates for queen: Grace Adams, Lillie Carrico Katelyn Devers, Abbigail East, Tenley Moore;

and for King: Jacob Glover, Dalton Hester, Matthew Henning, Eric Wigginton, and Kaeden Woods

The following spirit days will be observed that week as part of the annual spirit week:

Monday, September 28th–Class Shirt Day

Tuesday, September 29th–Pajama Day

Wednesday, September 30th–Decade Day

Thursday, October 1st–Pink Out (In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month; Student Council salutes the survivors and honors those who lost their battle)

Friday, October 2nd–Black Out/Pirate Pride Day

And now the tough part: the longest running football homecoming parade in the state.  Planning a parade this year has proven most difficult, but we are thrilled to announce that we will be able to keep some of the tradition going, albeit in a very limited capacity on Monday, September 28th at 4:30 P.M.  As a result of COVID restrictions and social distancing guidelines, many hard decisions had to be made to make sure we are adhering to expectations of school administration and the Clark County Health Department, so this year’s student participation will be limited to the homecoming court, class officers or selected representatives of a class for the four class floats, cheerleaders, marching band, and the varsity football team.  We welcome the students and community to line up along the parade route, respecting the cones set out for social distancing by the City of Charlestown.

The parade route remains the same and can be seen below.  The parade will not stop on the square this year as we are not able to hold the pep rally.  Student Council members are working on a virtual pep rally that will be shared via social media. We apologize for any inconvenience this plan causes, but Student Council has put forth their best effort to continue the tradition as much as possible and asks for your respect and support in the event.

Ricky Romans Letter of Resignation to Pirate Nation

Pirate Nation,

It has truly been a blessing leading the baseball program for the last 17 years. When I was fortunate to be hired in 2004, I never envisioned being the Head Baseball Coach through 2020. There was something about the program, and the community, that allowed me to grow so close so quickly. As an individual that grew up going to school and working in Jeffersonville, I will never forget when asked “why Charlestown?” during my interview. My response was that I believed it was a great opportunity for both of us. All I wanted was a chance to coach the game I have loved since I was a kid. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Hall gave me that opportunity with only one year of high school assistant coaching experience on my resume. Their belief in me fueled me to work hard and do the best I could for Charlestown, which quickly became home to me and my family. We eventually moved to the area and have raised our family here since 2009. I have always believed in loyalty, and Charlestown has shown great loyalty to me through the years. Many changes have occurred within the administration during my tenure, as I have worked for many wonderful people including Principals Dick Johnson, Keith Hedges, Mark Laughner, John Rowland, and Amy Cook. As for Athletic Directors, I have been blessed to work for Tony Hall, David Null, Kim Carroll, and Chad Gilbert. All these individuals have allowed me to grow not only as a coach, but as a person as well. They have treated me with great respect, and I will forever be grateful for their kindness and generosity.

Personally, Charlestown High School helped me through many difficult times in my life. When my mother died in 2006, it was one of the hardest times of my life. Then, in 2016 when I lost my father, followed by my stepfather in 2017, adversity of life struck again. As I told our players, life is challenging at times. Sports are a great release from the real world sometimes, and coaching baseball and being around great people kept me busy during some of the most challenging times in my life. Much of that is due to the help I received from my assistant coaches through the years, which included John Smith, Darren Floyd, Brian Hester, Bryan Roberts, Jim Worley, Bryan Glover, Jeremy Eger, Kyle Craig, Joe Natterman, Chris Nickles, Matt Siler, Chuck Latham, Brian Smith, Josh Romans, and Rick Romans Sr. We had so many wonderful times on and off the ball field together, and I genuinely appreciate all their hard work and commitment to Pirate Baseball.

All good coaches realize that teams start and end with the players. Even though I have a list of players since 2004, I do not want to take a chance on missing someone so I will just say it has truly been an honor coaching each of you. We have had many exciting times, and some challenging and heartbreaking times as well. I am sorry we could not bring more championships to Charlestown, but I will never forget the exciting come from behind victory in the Sectional Championship in 2009 and the Conference Championship in 2015. It was always my goal for you to be successful on the baseball field, but it was more important for me that you turn into great young men. Hopefully, even though you probably did not agree with our decisions at times, you realize that we, the coaches, genuinely care about you. As I now step away, I want to say Thank You for allowing me to be a small part of your development and I truly wish all of you the best in your future. I will always be just a phone call away if you need anything.

Forever a part of the Pirate Family,
Coach Romans

This Week in Sports August 31-September 5

Weekly recap and outlook provided by the WPMQ Sports Broadcasting class of Charlestown High School.

Lady Pirate Cross Country is Off to a Sizzling Start

The defending Mid Southern Conference and Sectional champion cross country team is off to another hot start after the girls finished 3rd to Indianapolis Cathedral and Seymour in the Seymour Invitational! Skylar Cochran and Jessie McCoy finished in the top 10 with Laney Hawkins, Jackie McCoy, Kaylee Kinser and Emma Faulkner in the top 25!

Last night, they traveled to Silver Creek for the annual Hokum Karem meet and finished second behind perennial cross country powerhouse Floyd Central in a meet with top area schools! A hokum karem race is a two-person relay race where teammates alternate running a 3k loop. Each teammate will complete the loop once.  For the Lady Pirates the team of Skylar Cochran and Jessie McCoy placed 5th, Laney Hawkins and Jackie McCoy were 7th, Emma Faulkner and Kaylee Kinser were 15th,  and Rachel Wilcox (paired with a Silver Creek runner) finished 18th.

Other teams in the meet included Madison, Borden, Jeffersonville, Silver Creek, Crothersville, Eastern, Salem, Lanesville, Christian Academy, and Scottsburg.

Dylan Kinser is the Pirates’ only male runner this year.  He has finished top 25 in both races so far.
