Cross Country Runs Well at North Harrison

IMG_1321Charlestown Cross Country traveled to North Harrison Thursday evening to participate in their annual invitational.  On a beautiful/perfect day for running, the girls finished 12th out of 20 teams. The girls were lead by Junior Katie Rhodes who finished in 18th place, who also had her season best time of 21:43. We had several ladies run their person best and season best times tonight. Senior Piper Clark ran her person best in the tins of 26:09. Freshman Claire Mitchell ran her personal best in the time 23:42. Sophomore Alexis Gurr ran her season best in the time of 25:26. Junior Kelsey Lakes ran her season best in the time of 25:40. Sophomore Samantha Matthews ran her person best time in 29:18. Freshman Carley Conway struggled midway through the race, but finished strong in the time of 22:59.

The boys placed 20th out of 22 teams. The guys were lead by senior Seth Parker, who ran his season best in the time of 18:54. Senior Logan Gurr ran his personal best in the time of 21:39. Freshman Josh McCoy ran a personal best in the time of 20:20. Other season bests include senior Darian Zeis (21:06), sophomore Drashaun Morrow (20:57), junior Matt Fellows (21:35), sophomore Harrison Adams (21:59).

Pirates Soccer Ties Madison

The Charlestown Pirate Soccer team (1-1-2 overall; 0-0-1 MSC) took on Madison at home on Tuesday night. The Pirates tied an extremely good Madison team whom have previously defeated the Pirates in recent years. Raul Martinez scored the tying goal with 30 seconds left in the match to save the game for the Pirates. An extremely happy Coach Wight commented the following after the game, “very proud of the boys, they never quit and kept fighting until the very end. Once again the movement of players with and without the ball were very good. The boys are getting better each game. This team is starting to play excellent soccer.” The Pirates will be back in action tonight as they face off on the road against MSC rival Scottsburg.

Pirate Tennis Sweeps Borden

The Charlestown Pirate Tennis team (4-2 overall; 0-2 MSC) looked impressive on Tuesday night when they swept sectional rival Borden at home 5-0 to improve their season record to 4-2 overall. In one singles, Miles Matthews took down Joseph Volstedt 6-2, 6-2. At two singles, Trey Woodward defeated Dawson Nale 6-2, 7-5. At three singles, Steven Delaney defeated Brandon Thompson 4-6, 6-0, 6-0. Both doubles teams played extremely well. At one doubles, Josh Copeland and Jacob Doherty defeated Corey Anderson and Mason Morris 6-3, 6-0. Also, at two doubles, Chase Wray and Aaron Meyer defeated Mason LaGrange and Jackson Wagnor 6-4, 6-2. Coach Matthews said this win was a great team win, and that singles played outstanding against Borden. The Charlestown Pirates (4-2 overall) will try to pick up their first MSC win of the season on Tuesday night, September 6th, as they travel up to Scott County to face off against Austin.

Pirates Finish Fourth at New Albany Invite

The Pirate Tennis team travel to and participated in the annual New Albany Invitational meet this past Saturday.  The Pirates as a team finished 4th overall, due to the following outstanding results:  Singles #1; Miles Matthews runner up 2-1 on weekend, Lost in Final.  Singles #2; Trey Woodward placed third, 2-1 on weekend with a good win over Silver Creek.  Singles #3; Jacob Doherty placed 4th, 2-1 on weekend.  #1 Doubles; Josh Copeland/Steven Delaney finished 5th with a good win over Scottsburg team who previously beat them.  #2 Doubles; Chase Wray/Aaron Meyer finished 7th place defeating Eastern Pekin.

Pirate Basketball Conditioning Opportunities Announced

Lady Pirate Soccer Takes Down Southern 8-0

The Charlestown Lady Pirate soccer team (1-1 overall; 0-0 MSC) hosted Southern High School from Louisville on Thursday night at Charlestown Middle School. The Lady Pirates played well, and took down Southern 8-0 on the hot, muggy evening. Illayah Keltner and Tayte Motsinger led the scoring with each having hat-tricks, followed by goals from Jessaca Rawson and Lexi White. Assists were recorded by Cheyenne Hawk, Illayah Keltner, Tayte Motsinger (3) and Machayla Hawkins. In total, the Pirates outshot Southern 18-2, holding them to the shutout. Southern fought hard until the end, with a young team and a small roster. “We saw a lot of improvement tonight from our first game last week. The kids implemented a lot of what we taught them in practice and executed it well. It was exciting to watch the girls work hard and with each other to achieve their first win in a few seasons,” commented a very proud Head Coach Chelsea Grover, picking up her first win as the new Lady Pirate Head Coach. “There were also lessons to learn from this game, to continue to improve throughout the season.” The Lady Pirates (1-1 overall) will open up conference play next Wednesday as they host the Corydon Central Lady Panthers. Pirate Soccer Falls to Southern

The Charlestown Pirate Soccer team (1-2-1 overall; 0-0-1 MSC) traveled across the bridge into Kentucky on Wednesday night to face off with Southern High School in Louisville. The Pirates played well in the first half, but ran out of gas in the second half and were defeated 6-2 by Southern High School. It was a tale of two halves, says Coach Wight. The Pirates were tied 2-2, but gave up four goals in the second half and were unable to recover. “Very proud of the boys, they left it all on the field. With this being our third straight game, our legs gave out in the second half. We our looking forward to these two days off. We will be back to work next week and get ready for Madison on Tuesday,” commented Head Coach Brian Wight following the match. The Pirates (1-2-1 overall) will be back in action on Tuesday night, as they host Madison. All CHS home soccer matches are now being held at Charlestown High School starting Monday.
