Volleyball Defeats Defending Champ Cats

McCoyServerCharlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball (5-6 & 3-2 MSC) hosted the North Harrison Lady Cats Thursday evening in the CHS Sports Arena.  North Harrison, the 2015 defending conference volleyball champs, and winners of four of their last six matches; is a team the Lady Pirate Volleyball program hadn’t beaten in over at least six years.  That changed Thursday evening, as Charlestown dropped the first set 18-25; before storming back to win three straight sets and the match 25-23, 25-13 & 25-19.  “We have a great win against a good conference team tonight.  Although we had a slow start in the first set, we were able to battle back and gain momentum as we played.  Our win was a total team effort.  We served well tonight which kept North Harrison from getting the ball to their key middle hitter”, commented Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Amelia McCoy was a key server for the Lady Pirates; establishing a 4-0 lead the third set and an 11-0 lead in the fourth set.   McCoy also ended the night with seven aces.  Kaia Reid let the offense with 12 kills, while Amelia McCoy and Hannah Thibideau each had five.  Hannah Thibideau was also able to get her hands on some blocks that helped slow down the Lady Cat middle attack.  Hannah Vincent led the Charlestown defense with 12 digs.  “Tonight was a good win for us, and I’m proud of all the players for staying focused and supporting each other.  This is a good win for us as we go into a tough Jeff Invite on Saturday”added Coach Nuxoll.  The Lady Pirate Junior Varsity team improved their record Thursday evening, also defeating North Harrison 25-22, & 25-18.

Lady Pirates Top Red Devils 4-0

Playing their second game of the week, the Lady Pirate Soccer team defeated the Jeffersonville High School JV team 4-0 at home. The Pirates came out strong, with Ilayah Keltner scoring in the sixth minute assisted by Motsinger. Motsinger found the back of the net in the 21st minute, followed by another goal in the 23rd minute, with Ilayah netting her second goal of the night in the 26th minute.

The Pirates found themselves up 4-0 at halftime. “We were combining and had good energy in the first half. Jeff had a few looks on goal, which gives us things to work on defensively next week when we take on their varsity.”

Credit does need to also be given to the back line of Hawk, Fielding, Wight, Guivas, Romero, Perez, Guzman, and Brenley Berger in goal for the shut out.

The Devils held the Pirates 0-0 in the second half leaving the game as it was at halftime. “It was a good win for our kids, with a lot of players learning new things. We did not come out with the same energy and intensity as the first half though. We will have to find a way to put together a full 80 minutes. Jeff played a good second half.”

The Pirates outshot the Devils with 20 shots on goal to 2.

We are looking forward to a tough match against their Varsity next week. Our next game is on the road Tuesday against Southwestern.

Volleyball Sweeps Hilltoppers 3-0

VBblocksThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team improved their season record to 4-6 Wednesday evening when hosting and sweeping the Madison Shawe Hilltoppers 25-14, 25-21, and 26-24.  “Tonight was a much needed win for us.  This was the first time we have played Shawe since I have been coaching at Charlestown and we were not sure what to expect.  The girls played steady through some different line-up changes and kept their composure to come back in the third set despite being down late in match”, commented Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  The Charlestown offense was led by Kaia Reid with 13 kills followed by Amelia McCoy and Kiersten James with 6 kills each.  Maddie Nuxoll helped the offense with 22 assists.  The defense was led by Amelia McCoy with 11 digs with Chrissa Ledbetter and Maddie Nuxoll a close second with 9 a piece.  Kaia Reid also had five aces while McCoy and Ledbetter had three each.  “It was a good overall team effort.  We will need to take this momentum into our conference match against North Harrison tomorrow night at home”, concluded Nuxoll.  The Lady Pirate Junior Varsity team also recorded the sweep agaisnt Shawe, winning their match 2-0 (25-8, & 25-13).  For more information about Lady Pirate Volleyball, go to www.PiratePride.BLUE/Volleyball.

Lady Pirates Top Corydon 4-3 at Home

Tonight in a hard fought match to the end, the Lady Pirates defeated Corydon 4-3.  Ilayah Keltner opened up the scoring for the Pirates bringing down a loose ball out of the middle and beating the Corydon defense to put it in the back of the net.  Corydon then answered back before the first half ended to tie it at 1-1.

Jessaca Rawson put the Pirates ahead at the beginning of the second half a couple minutes in, assisted by Motsinger.  Corydon fired back minutes later again evening up the score at two. Ilayah Keltner netted the third goal with an assist from Rawson to put the Pirates up 3-2. It was a back and forth battle as Corydon evened the playing field again at 3.

They had a lot of speed up top, that gave our back line some trouble and a run for our money. Their speed and willingness to win 50/50 balls brings up key points for us to work on. Tayte Motsinger broke the tie with three minutes left in the game, taking a shot from 25 yards out into the back of the net to end the game 4-3.

Brenley Berger came up big for us tonight in goal, making 13 saves. She handled 3 or 4 breakaways to keep us in the match as they had plenty of looks to send the score the other direction.

It was a great game and we are very proud of our kids. Corydon has speed and tenacity and really challenged our kids. We have a quick turn around as we host Jeffersonville’s JV at home at 6:30pm.

Lady Pirates Fall to #7 Creek 3-0

Lady Pirate Volleyball traveled to Silver Creek Thursday evening for a conference contest.  Charlestown fell to the Dragons 3-0 (15-25, 9-25, 6-25).  “There is a reason that Silver Creek is ranked 7th in the state in 3A. They are a very strong team and they are definitely the strongest team we have faced this season. I was hoping that we would be more competitive against them, but we allowed them to control the tempo of the game and we played tentative which allowed them the freedom to run their quick offense. We have lost some players to injury but are hoping to come back a little healthier next week”, concluded Coach Tammy Nuxoll. Kaia Reid led the team with 9 kills and 6 digs.  The CHS JV team also lost to Silver Creek 6-25, 18-25.
