Lady Pirate Soccer Falls to Salem

Three Charlestown Lady Pirate seniors were honored on Monday night: Tayte Montsinger, Ilayah Keltner, and Aries Perez.  All three seniors started the game including Motsinger, who has been out for the majority of the season with a foot injury.  The Lady Pirates came out strong and scored within 2 minutes to go up 1-0 but they couldn’t muster another goal the rest of the game.  Salem was able to put away 3 goals in both halves to win 1-6.  Both teams played hard and there was great sportmanship across the field.  Charlestown honored the 5 seniors graduating from Salem as well.

“We appreciate Salem allowing Tayte to come on for kick off, even in her boot. They all stood around the circle and cheered for her. I know she will remember that. These seniors are incredible players and girls and they will be missed both on and off the field. Thank you Tayte, Ilayah and Aries for giving your time and talent to Charlestown Girls Soccer!  You girls have some bright futures ahead of you!” commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kelsey Rogers.
First half stats:  CHS 1 (Ilayah Keltner); Salem 3 (Kielynn Tally, Callie Beckherms, Leah Miller)
Second half stats:  CHS 0; Salem 3 (Elise Tally, Leah Miller, Samantha Calhoun)
Final Score 6-2 Salem.  Lady Pirate Goalie Brenley Berger finished the game with 14 saves.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Tops Rock Creek 3-1

VolleyballSeniors2017bCharlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball moved to 15-9 on the season Monday evening after outlasting visiting Rock Creek 3-1 (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, and 26-24); the Lions dropped to 21-5 on the season.  “Tonight was a great match against Rock Creek with both sides leaving everything out on the floor.  I’m so proud of my team for the way they played together to pull out the win.  Each set was very close with some of the longest rallies we have had this season.  It was truly a battle back and forth for each point. Overall we had a decent night passing, and when we weren’t passing well Maddie Nuxoll, did a nice job of running down passes to put sets up for the hitters.  We had several good defensive plays by our backcourt.  In the fourth set, we found ourselves down 2-8, but everyone battled back and contributed for the win”, summarized Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.  Senior Kaia Reid led the offense with 13 kills while Senior Maddie Nuxoll contributed 33 assists and 23 digs. Senior Molly Braunecker led the defense with 31 digs.  “We look to bring the same intensity to our last home match for Senior Night, against Borden Tuesday night”, concluded Coach Nuxoll.  The Charlestown JV team battled in the opener but fell to Rock Creek 1-2 (25-22, 24-25, & 6-15).

Tennis Earns 4-1 Victory Over Southwestern, Finds Out Sectional Draw

The Pirate Tennis team traveled to Hanover tonight for a non-conference matchup with the Rebels from Southwestern and earned the 4-1 victory, losing only at #1 singles in a tie-breaker. Steven Delaney lost 3-6, 6-2 (7-10). At #2 singles Alec Sipes won 6-1, 6-2 while Michael Gillooly rounded out the singles matches with a 6-3, 4-6 (14-12) tiebreaker win at #3.

At doubles, the #1 duo of Aaron Meyer and Chase Wray got the 7-5, 6-0 victory and at #2 Isaac Bates and Eric Wigginton won 6-2, 6-2.

Two freshmen, Gillooly and Wigginton, pick up their first varsity wins tonight and hope to fill the void that will be left when four seniors graduate from this team. Pirates Steven Delaney, Jacob Doherty, Aaron Meyer, and Alec Sipes will be honored on Senior Night tomorrow as they host conference rival Salem before heading into sectional play on Wednesday.

Silver Creek will host this year’s sectional.  The draw was held tonight and the Pirates will take on Borden, a team they beat 5-0 decisively this season. Henryville will face Silver Creek.  The finals will then be held Thursday evening.

Best of luck to our Pirate Tennis team as they wrap up the regular season tomorrow and do their best to make a deep run in the state tournament.
