Braves Get All They Could Handle from Pirates

The game was as emotional as any rivalry game you can find, and the setting and atmosphere was nothing short of story-book style.  The Charlestown Pirate Football team, in the opinions of most statewide procrastinators, wasn’t expected to finish Saturday’s Lucas Oil Stadium Showcase within forty points of Class 3A #5 Brownstown……but that’s definitely not what type of game was played.  Brownstown Head Coach Reed May was quoted in local media stories, regarding Saturday’s game, indicating that his team didn’t “want the game” as much as the Pirates did, until the end.  Excuses can be made all day long; but to witnesses who watched the entire game between Charlestown and Brownstown, in the house that “Peyton built”, know different.  The Charlestown coaching staff, under new head coach Darin Ward, prepared a well designed attack of the senior laiden Braves; and made more than just a game of it.  The Pirates (1-1 & 0-1 MSC) and Braves both punted on their opening drives, before Sophomore Antonyo Gaddie capped a 13 play 97 yard drive with a one yard score (PAT failed).  Brownstown (2-0 & 1-0 MSC) then scored on their next possession, with 10:26 remaining in the second quarter.  Drives for both teams stalled twice leaving a 7-6 Brave advantage at the half.  Charlestown forced the Braves to punt after five plays to start the second half, but the Pirates fumbled the return and set up a three play seven yard touchdown drive for Brownstown.  Both teams stalled on two drives until late in the fourth when Charlestown recovered a Brave fumble at the three yard line; and scored on another Gaddie touchdown run.  The conversion failed making the score 14-12 Brownstown with 2:35 remaining in the game.  Charlestown’s Quinton Fetz executed a perfect on side kick, leading the Pirates to a two play 46 yard drive that ended with a Gaddie 23 yard touchdown run.  The drive took 14 seconds of the clock and gave the Pirates a six point lead.  Brownstown scored again with two clicks left and nailed the extra point to survive with a 21-20 win.  Gaddie was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC and Coyle Nissan Player of the Game; finishing with 185 yards of rushing on 30 carries and three touchdowns.  Senior Jason Houchens was named the Defensive Player of the Game after finishing with 12 tackles.  The Pirates will travel to Clarksville Friday to continue MSC play.

JV Football Pirates Dominate Cubs 26-8

Saturday morning, the JV Pirate Football (1-0) team hosted their Madison counterparts on Dutch Reis Field.  The Pirates stretched their legs on defensive and offense as they dispatched the visiting Cubs to the final tune of 26-8.  Junior Dacota Osborn got the scoring started for the Pirates after turning a blocked punt into a defensive touchdown.  The Pirate defense struck again when Sophomore Simon Woolridge intercepted a Madison pass, returning it to the Cub four yard line; before Junior Jaren Anderson run it in for six more.  Sophomore Trey Crace stopped another Madison drive with another Pirate interception, his second of the game, which led to a forty yard TD strike to Junior Dylin Taylor.  Two PAT’s by Sophomore Calvin McClelland and a Sophomore Amado Gomez thirty yard touchdown scamper closed out the Pirate scoring.  The JV Pirates are back in action at Brownstown on Monday September 1st.

Pirates Shut Out Cubs 21-0 in Ward Debut

The Charlestown Pirate Football team traveled to Madison Friday evening to begin their 2014 campaign; and try out their new coach in a game environment.  The Pirate defense played up to expectation; flying to the ball and executing open field tackles as if it were a season finale.  “Proud of the team, everyone did their job…..we saw some things we’re gonna work on; but overall it was a solid win”, commented Coach Ward after the game.  After a scoreless first half of defense versus defense; the Pirates found pay dirt when Sophomore RB Antonyo Gaddie broke free for a 24 yard touchdown.  The point after snap didn’t go as planned, however Sophomore Garrett Woods ran the ball in for a successful two point conversion; to make 8-0.  The Pirates (1-0) took a 15-0 lead to halftime after Senior Eli Daniel caught a Senior QB Tristan Chester pass for a 68 yard score.  The defenses squared off again in the third quarter, holding both teams scoreless.  Madison’s best drive of the night landed them on the Pirate 27 yard line after eleven plays and 48 yards; however when trying to connect in the enzone; a Cub pass was intercepted by Junior Tate Boley to stop the drive.  Midway through the fourth quarter, Senior Eli Daniel secured the Pirate victory when he broke free for a 43 yard touchdown to make the final 21-0.  The Pirates finished with 177 yards on 32 carries; 125 of which were courtesy of 21 carries by Sophomore Antonyo Gaddie.  Madison put another drive together late in the fourth, however Junior Christian Bates got the Pirates’ second interception of the night to end the Cub drive and secure the shut out for his team.  Charlestown finished the game with 282 total yards of offense, 82 more then Madison.  Eli Daniel was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC & Coyle Nissan Offensive Player of the Game while Sophomore Bradley Laffoon earned Defensive Player of the Game honors by Pirate Pride Sports.  The Pirates now look forward to their week two match up, next Saturday at 2:40 pm, versus #6 Brownstown, in Lucas Oil Stadium.
