Two Charlestown XC Teams Medal at Hokum Karem

On another hot and very humid evening, the Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Cross Country teams traveled to Sellersburg for the Darryl Kingery Hokum Karem meet.  In the team format ( 2 runners are a team ), the Charlestown team of Whitney Andrews/ Katie Rhodes placed 6th overall and Alysha Flaget/Gabrielle Gagnon placed 10th to earn medals!  On the boys side it was Seth Parker/Skyler Elmore placing 22nd to earn a medal! ( top 25 earn medals ).  One spot out of medal contention was Molly Sumner/Erin Kimbrell in 26th. The Hokum Karem format is a relay where each runner runs a mile, then tags their partner who runs a mile.  Each runner does this 3 times for a total of 6 miles per team.  “I also want to say that I am proud of Bree Ward/Isabella Golja and Matt Fellows/Darian Zeice.  Everyone gave it there best tonight in some very tough conditions!” commented Coach Jerry Doyle.

Corydon Squeezes Past Pirate Soccer

Varsity: Charlestown 1 (Josh Wray Goal); Corydon Central 2: (Drew Uesseler Goal, Charlestown Own Goal)

The Charlestown Pirates opened conference play at home against Corydon Central. The visiting Panthers were dominated from the outset with the Pirates easily controlling the length of the game and putting shot after shot on goal. However, Senior holding midfielder Josh Wray was the only Pirate who was able to find the goal with just over 30 minutes remaining in the first half. The Charlestown team looked like much the better team, the Panthers were not able to mount a serious attack throughout the entire first half of the game, a desperation crack at the ball from 45 yards out from goal deflected up into the air off of the Charlestown defenders foot and managed to sail all the way back to the Charlestown net where it caught the home team keeper off of his line and unable to recover enough to get little more than a weak punch on the ball that only managed to direct the ball into the top of his own net to level the score 1-1 at half time. The Charlestown domination continued into the second half with shot after shot on goal finding no purchase, and just like the first half, very little in terms of an attack from the visiting Panthers until freshman Drew Uesseler placed the ball past the Charlestown keeper off a set piece to take the lead. Unfortunately the Pirates were unlucky to drop this important conference game and are now left hoping that someone else will beat the Panthers later on in the season and they can stay in the title race.

JV: Charlestown 1 (Demetrio Ortuno); Corydon Central 0

After a 30 minute rain delay that began immediately after the finish to the Varsity contest, the JV squads took the field for 35 minutes of action. Freshman Strike duo Anthony Carey and Jeremiah Paiz were connecting well with fellow freshman center midfielder Demetrio Ortuno and sophomore right wing CJ Ponder. But it was ultimately Ortuno who took control of the ball 20 yards from goal and dribble penetrated through multiple Panther defenders and slotted home his solo goal. This is the first goal of the season for Ortuno and it marks a long awaited return to form for the freshman who has been watched for several seasons coming up through the middle school ranks.

The Charlestown Pirates (2-1) will play next against Southern High School in Louisville, KY on Thursday August 28th before returning home on Tuesday after the long weekend against the Madison Cubs in another Varsity/JV double header.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Falls to Mustangs

CHS JV lost 18-25, 23-25; CHS Varsity lost 7-25, 26-28, 17-25

The Lady Pirate Volleyball Varsity started out lethargic in the first set, making some errors and couldn’t get together.  Line-up adjustments were made in the second set and the second group played with a lot of enthusiasm and heart.  Charlestown passed better in the second game and that allowed to run an offense; however despite lots of effort, the Lady Pirates lost a close battle 26-28.  The third match Charlestown just ran out of gas losing 17-25; as many of the girls in that second and third match, also played in the Junior Varsity match.  “I was encouraged about our play tonight.  Keeley Couch showed good leadership, and she and Maddie Nuxoll did a nice job of running the offense”, commented Coach Nuxoll.  Emalee Craven contributed 15 kills tonight for a solid performance on the front row.  “That is the most kills from a single player since I started at Charlestown last year”, continued Nuxoll.  “We were able to get her more sets tonight because our passing was better.  Shelby Goedeker, Emalee Craven and Chrissa Ledbetter led our passing efforts.  Sidney Goedeker, Hannah Vincent, Bri Harvey and Morgan Eldridge also made good contributions tonight.  I hope we can carry these improvements into our match against Henryville tomorrow.”

“Overall we played better tonight in both the JV and Varsity matches.  The JV started out slow, but started to gain momentum at the end of the set.  They carried that momentum over into the second set and lost a nail-biter 26-28. We just had small break downs in passing and serving which is improved from yesterday’s match.  I thought overall the play was more consistent. I was also proud of our bench tonight. Some players didn’t get in the match, but showed great team spirit” concluded Coach Nuxoll.

Pirate Soccer Tops Hornets 9-2

The Charlestown Boys Soccer team traveled to Henryville High School on Monday evening for a Varsity and JV match.  Charlestown (2-0) won the Varsity match 9-2.  Seniors Michael Navetta, Colin Martin, and Brayden Cooksey each helped to put points on the board for the Pirates for the second game in a row as the attacking trio dominated the Hornets away from home.  Michael Navetta would lead all scorers on the night with a hat trick of 3 goals to go along with his assist.  Martin would again chalk up a brace of goals for the second game running as he finished the night with 2 goals and 1 assist himself and Brayden Cooksey worked the left side to great effect with a goal and an assist of his own to spread the attack across all fronts.  The Pirates playmaker, Junior Trent Wight, again turned in a phenomenal performance as he contributed 2 assists and a goal from the pocket of the attacking front.  Defensively Seniors Josh Waters and Konner Heil worked their spell in the heat and humidity providing good minutes and providing security through the backline.  Senior Esdras Hernandez turned in a noteworthy performance of his own as a holding midfielder as he dribbled circles around and through the midfield to create countless chances for his teammates and eventually find the net himself with a solo goal. Freshman holding midfielder Isai Galvan chiseled his name into the record books for the first time as he found the net as well for a solo goal.

The Junior Varsity contest that followed showed freshman striker Jeremiah Paiz notching his first goal of the season for the Pirates and very nearly earning an assist as he played a gorgeous cross to Anthony Carey who narrowly missed the opportunity to score; when a Henryville defender misplayed the ball into their own net, robbing both Carey and Paiz of the statistic.  With the Pirate JV squad up 2-0, Sophomore Austin Weatherford scouted out the top of the penalty box to return a rebound into the goal for his first goal of the season.  Charlestown JV win 3-0.  Junior newcomer Zach Higdon turned in an admirable performance for both the JV squad and the last 20 minutes of the Varsity match in his debut performance, having given up a single goal in the Varsity match and holding a clean sheet in the JV match.

Charlestown 9 (Sr. Colin Martin 2 goals 1 assist, Sr. Michael Navetta 3 goals 1 assist, Sr. Brayden Cooksey 1 goal 1 assist, Jr. Trent Wight 1 goal 2 assists, Fr. Isai Galvan 1 goal, Sr. Esdras Hernandez 1 goal).  Henryville 2 (Bailey Reister 1 goal, Christian Smith 1 goal)

JV Charlestown 3 (Fr. Jeremiah Paiz 1 goal and forced an own goal by Henryville with a stellar cross into the box, So. Austin Weatherford 1 goal).  JV Henryville 0.

The Pirates face conference rivals Corydon Central on Tuesday the 26th at home with the Varsity kicking off at 6:00 and the JV to follow.

Pirates Shut Out Cubs 21-0 in Ward Debut

The Charlestown Pirate Football team traveled to Madison Friday evening to begin their 2014 campaign; and try out their new coach in a game environment.  The Pirate defense played up to expectation; flying to the ball and executing open field tackles as if it were a season finale.  “Proud of the team, everyone did their job…..we saw some things we’re gonna work on; but overall it was a solid win”, commented Coach Ward after the game.  After a scoreless first half of defense versus defense; the Pirates found pay dirt when Sophomore RB Antonyo Gaddie broke free for a 24 yard touchdown.  The point after snap didn’t go as planned, however Sophomore Garrett Woods ran the ball in for a successful two point conversion; to make 8-0.  The Pirates (1-0) took a 15-0 lead to halftime after Senior Eli Daniel caught a Senior QB Tristan Chester pass for a 68 yard score.  The defenses squared off again in the third quarter, holding both teams scoreless.  Madison’s best drive of the night landed them on the Pirate 27 yard line after eleven plays and 48 yards; however when trying to connect in the enzone; a Cub pass was intercepted by Junior Tate Boley to stop the drive.  Midway through the fourth quarter, Senior Eli Daniel secured the Pirate victory when he broke free for a 43 yard touchdown to make the final 21-0.  The Pirates finished with 177 yards on 32 carries; 125 of which were courtesy of 21 carries by Sophomore Antonyo Gaddie.  Madison put another drive together late in the fourth, however Junior Christian Bates got the Pirates’ second interception of the night to end the Cub drive and secure the shut out for his team.  Charlestown finished the game with 282 total yards of offense, 82 more then Madison.  Eli Daniel was named the Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC & Coyle Nissan Offensive Player of the Game while Sophomore Bradley Laffoon earned Defensive Player of the Game honors by Pirate Pride Sports.  The Pirates now look forward to their week two match up, next Saturday at 2:40 pm, versus #6 Brownstown, in Lucas Oil Stadium.
