WPMQ Produces First Episode of “Talk the Plank”

The Sports Broadcasting team for WPMQ has been working this first quarter of school to produce a weekly sports recap and today was the release of the first episode.  Students have made major improvements to the aesthetics of their news cast over last year’s “View from WPMQ” already.  Their teacher, Melissa Stewart, said she is proud of their efforts to stay abreast of all the results of our Pirate athletics and to get this going, but she knows there is a lot of work to do to work on presence and poise, as well as the sports writing that is also contributed here on Pirate Pride. Lady Pirate Volleyball Falls to #3 in 1A Christian Academy

The Lady Pirates traveled to #3 in 1A Christian Academy last night and lost in three. Coach Nuxoll said, “CAI is a good team. There is a reason that they are ranked third in the state in 1A. We struggled with our passing and defense, but I felt like when we were getting passes and able to get good sets we were able to get some good rallies and hits against them. We also had some good blocks. Our offense was led by Kylie McConnell with 7 kills. Kayleigh Smith led the defense with 6 digs and Korea Tutt added 4 blocks. We will work on our defense and passing tomorrow to prepare for the New Washington tournament on Saturday.”

The JV team ended their season with a win tonight in three sets. Their overall record was 12-6.

Charlestown JV won 24-25, 25-12, 15-12
Charlestown Varsity lost 25-11, 25-15, 25-7

Pirate Tennis Downs Borden 3-2 in Sectional Semi-Finals

The Pirate tennis team avenged a mid-season loss to Borden in last night’s sectional semi-final when they pulled out three tight matches to overcome the Braves 3-2 in exciting fashion.

After losing the first set at #2 singles 3-6, sophomore Eric Wigginton was the first of the Pirates to emerge as a winner with a 6-3, 6-2 comeback. Wigginton looked as strong physically and mentally as he has all season which is good, not only looking into tonight’s championship, but also into next season for the young Pirates.

The #1 doubles team of freshman Brandon Broady and senior Jacob Roberts won their first set 6-4, dropped the second 5-7, but came back strong to win the match with a 6-2 third set. The #2 doubles team of freshman Alex Wright and senior Jase Smith ended the night, winning with lots of excitement.  They dropped their first set 6-3, rallied back to win 7-4 in the second set tiebreaker, then finished off the Braves 6-4 in the third.

Isaac Bates at #1 singles and Michael Gillooly at #3 singles were both defeated.

The Pirates will take on the Silver Creek Dragons tonight in the Sectional Championship at 4:30 at Silver Creek. Come out and support the Pirate Tennis team!

 

Pirate Soccer Gets Big Win on Senior Night

The Pirate soccer team hosted Austin last night in a senior night matchup at Dutch Reis Field, scored early and often, and left the Eagles with a 10-2 defeat. The Pirates’ ten goals came from Elijah Cooley, Ian Flora, Jackson Melton, Matt Parrella, Eric Sipes (x2), Pascual Gonzalez (x2), and Andrew Mattingly (x2).

Assist for the night came from Aric Hooker, Elijah Cooley, Gryphon Brading, Bryce Wray, Andrew Mattingly (x2), and Matt Parrella.

Charlestown ended the night with 31 shots with 25 on goal. Senior Matt Parrella had 2 saves and allowed 1. Freshman, Tristan Nethery had 2 saves and allowed 1.

Coach Martinez had this to say: “It was a good senior night for CHS. We recognized our five seniors Matt Parrella, Andrew Mattingly, Austin Cooper, Ali AlBawi, and Ian Flora. The team played good which lead us to a victory.  We have a Scottsburg tournament scheduled for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so we will use the momentum from the win to help us succeed at the tournament.”

The junior varsity also had a good 5-0 win.

Attention, Pirate Nation! The Pirate football team needs your appetite!

Tomorrow evening the The Big X Sports from WXVW will be live at 7:00 with Coach Hawkins, select Pirate players, and representatives from the Providence football program at the River Ridge Zaxby’s on Highway 62 for the Thursday Night Touchdown Showdown.

Here’s where you come in! Bring that appetite from 6-8, order a meal from Zaxby’s, sit back and enjoy the show! A percentage of the proceeds will go back to the school that eats the most Zaxby’s! Hope to see you there.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Improves on the Road in MSC Win

The Lady Pirates improve their record to (9-6 & MSC 4-2) after an impressive conference win on the road against Eastern (5-11 & MSC 2-4). Head coach Tammy Nuxoll was very pleased with her teams performance last night.

“We came out strong and Eastern made some mistakes to help us win the first set. The second set Eastern cut down on their errors and we had trouble stringing points together. The third set we played more consistent and were able to win. In the fourth set, we were down 15-21 when I called my last time out. After that we decided to wake up and play. Kayleigh Smith was unstoppable and earned 9 of her 19  kills for the night in the fourth set. Her offense was attributed to good defense behind her and good setting decisions. Peyton Crace really helped us with her serving in the final stretch of the win by earning  6 service points to end the match. I’m proud of the whole team for their efforts overcoming a 15-21 deficit in the fourth to win the final set 26-24. Kyra Sharp also contributed to the offense with 11 kills and Kylie McConnell had 8 kills.  Savannah McClellan, Kayleigh Smith and Alyssa Heal helped with passing and Kyra Sharp contributed 5 digs while Abbi East had 4 digs. We used a different line up tonight and I’m happy with the way the girls adapted and supported each other. We will be back at it tomorrow night at home against Lanesville.”

Pirate Tennis Sweeps MSC Matchup at Clarksville

Eric Wigginton at #2 singles returns a serve.

Coach Matthews and the Pirate tennis team traveled to Clarksville for a Mid-Southern Conference matchup and swept the Generals yesterday.

Senior Isaac Bates (#1 singles) won his match in three sets (6-4, 4-6, and 6-1). Sophomore Eric Wigginton (#2 singles) picked up his first varsity singles win in three sets as well, battling back from a 1-4 deficit in the 3rd set (6-3, 2-6, 7-5). To finish out the singles matches, Michael Gillooly (#3) prevailed in two (6-2, 6-2).

At No. 1 doubles Brandon Broady and Jacob Roberts won (6-2, 6-2).  The Generals forfeited the No. 2 doubles match.

The Pirates are back on the courts tonight when they host Providence at 4:30 P.M.
