Pirate Football will host MSC football rival North Harrison Friday night in the Bone Yard with a 7:00 pm kick-off and annual Homecoming ceremony taking place during halftime of the game. HAPPY HOMECOMING PIRATE NATION!

Lukes Runs 475 Yard School Rushing Record in 41-12 Rout

Charlestown Pirate Football (2-1 & 2-1 MSC) traveled to rival Clarksville Friday evening; with hopes of hanging a 12th straight varsity football victory on the Generals and make the all time series 27-22….mission accomplished.  Even though mother nature made Pirate Nation wait til her pregame light show was complete and put away; Junior Marion Lukes and the Pirates wasted no time when the game clock started.

Charlestown cruised to a 41-12 victory, leading 28-6 at the midway point of the evening.  Lukes was simply unstoppable and virtually ran the ball at will finishing the game with 475 yards on eighteen carries and five of the Pirates’ touchdowns; 320 yards on just ten carries during the first half alone.  Lukes’ total against the Generals set a new single game rushing record which had stood since Ryan Roederer’s 350 yard performance against Brownstown in 2000.

Lukes scored touchdowns on runs of 55, 49, 86, 51 and 77 yards; similar to the pregame lightning.  The Pirates also got scoring courtesy of a Devin Lukes touchdown, a Bo Braunecker two point conversion, and three Andrew Mattingly point afters.

The Pirate Defense was led by Sophomore Deke Brown, named the Defensive Player of the Game by The Pirate Network Broadcast on WPMQ 99.3 FM Radio.

“Marion really ran the ball well, looked like he was on another level this evening”, stated Pirate Head Coach Jason Hawkins of his Junior Running back’s performance.

The Pirates are back in action next Friday at home in the Bone Yard, against the defending MSC champs from North Harrison; the Cougars (3-0), who dispatched Corydon 42-7 Friday night.

Pirate Boys’ Soccer Falls 3-2 to Tough Opponent Madison

Pirate Junior Michael Jewell commands the ball.

On August 28th, the Charlestown Pirates’ Boys Soccer team fell to tough opponent, Madison 3-2. The first goal for the Pirates came from Aric Hooker at 29:45, while the second goal was achieved by Bryce Wray at the 24:33 mark, assisted by Gryphon Brading. Charlestown had 16 shots with 10 on goal, while madison had 13 shots with 8 on goal. Matt Parrella had 5 saves and allowed 3.

Per Coach Martinez, “Today was a great match. We kept more possession of the ball and had many opportunities with the ball. Unfortunately, there were a few mistakes that cost us the game. The Pirates fought hard, but feel there were some plays that we could have put in goal. Overall, I am proud of the team’s performance this evening. I hope the boys take to rest up and kick butt in our first away game on Thursday.”

The Pirates’ JV team did come away with a victory over Madison, 1-0.

The team will travel to Scottsburg on Thursday for a contest set to begin at 6:00 P.M.

Lady Pirates Outlast Lady Rebels in Last Night’s Volleyball Matchup

Charlestown’s Kaleigh Smith goes for the kill.

The Charlestown Lady Pirates (3-4 & 2-1 MSC) earned a hard fought victory against the Southwestern Lady Rebels (6-4)  25-19, 13-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-12.

“Tonight was a hard fought match between both schools. We came off two hard loses last week where we didn’t play our best, but I’m proud that the girls were able to regroup and play together tonight as a team. We played consistent the first match, but had trouble in the second when Southwestern started running their middle. The third set was a hard fought battle. We played well, but just had a few off plays at the end. Despite the close loss, it was good to see the girls not give up and play even harder to win the fourth. The final set we had a 5-0 lead, but let them creep back to 12-13. It was good to see us hang on to the finish. I cannot say enough good things about our passing tonight. Our primary passers: Savannah McClellan, Kyra Sharp, Abbi East, Peyton Crace and Kayleigh Smith stepped it up tonight which was a key to our success. All of the hitters had positive hitting percentages. Kyra Sharp led in kills with 11 and Korea Tutt was a close second with 10 kills and also had 3 blocks. Kayleigh Smith also contributed 8 kills. Southwestern always has a strong team so this was a good win for us. We will work to carry our positive start this week into our away match against Silver Creek on Thursday“, reported Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll. The Lady Pirates are back in action Thursday against rival school Silver Creek @ SC, with JV starting at 6.

The Junior Varsity Lady Pirates had a tough loss (4-2) 10-25, 20-25 in their home match-up.
