CHS Track & Field Dominates in Season Finale

The Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Track & Field regular season came to an end Tuesday evening with a dominating performance, by both the ladies and gentlemen, over visiting Southwestern, Rock Creek and Christian Academy High Schools.  The Lady Pirates finished in first place as a team with 88 points, ahead of Rock Creek’s 55 points, CAI’s 38, and Southwestern’s 18 points respectively.  The Pirates also garnered a first place team finish with 114 points, ahead of CAI’s 44 points, Southwestern’s 35, and Rock Creek’s 22 points respectively.

Lady Pirate First Place finishers were:  Gabi Gagnon, in the 4×800 relay, and 1600M run; Alysha Flaget in the 4×800 relay, 800M run, and 4×400 relay; Whitney Andrews in the 4×800 relay, 3200M run, and 4×400 relay; Kelsey Lakes in the 4×800 relay, and 400M; Tatye Motsinger in the 100M hurdles and 300M hurdles; and Jenna Daniel in the Long Jump event.

Lady Pirate Second Place finishers were:  Jenna Daniel, in the Shot Put; and Tayte Mosinger in the High Jump.

Another notable Lady Pirate performance included Freshman DeAshia King, who finished the Discus event with a personal best distance of 76’4.75”.

Pirate First Place finishers were:  Eli Daniel, in the 4x100m Relay, High Jump and Long Jump events; Tyler Olsen, in the 4x100m Relay, 100m and 200m Dash events; Steven Delaney, in the 4x400m Relay, and the 110m and 300m Hurdle events; Luke Finchum, in the Shot Put; Tristan Chester, in the Discus event; TJ Jackson, in the 4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay, and 400m Dash event; Trey Woodward, in the 4x100m and 4x400m Relays; Andrew Shaw, in the 4x400m Relay, and Derek Walters, in the 800m Run event.

Pirate Second Place finishers were:  Brady Christman, in the Shot Put event; Garrett Woods, in the High Jump event; Syd Gieseking, in the Long Jump event; Mitchell Wurtsmith, in the 110m Hurdles; Derek Walters, in the 1600m Run; Andrew Shaw, in the 400m Dash; and Seth Parker, in the 3200m Run.

The Girls MSC Championships will be held at North Harrison High School on Tuesday, May 12th beginning at 5:00 pm; and the Boys MSC Championships will be held at Corydon High School on Thursday, May 14th beginning at 5:30 pm.  The Girls Track and Field Sectionals will be held at Jeffersonville HS on Tuesday, May 19th beginning at 5:00 pm; and the Boys Track and Field Sectionals will be held at Jeffersonville HS on Thursday, May 21st beginning at 5:00 pm.

The Lady Pirate 4×800 Team Betters their School Record

The Charlestown High School Lady Pirate Track and Field team participated in the North Harrison Invitational last Friday night, competing against at least a dozen other local schools.  The highlight of the meet for Charlestown was the girls 4 x 800 meter relay team bettering the school record they broke earlier in the season.  Gabi Gagnon, Alysha Flaget, Kelsey Lakes and Whitney Andrews placed 6th in 4×800; but also set a new school record of 11:12.09.  Additionally, Alysha Flaget placed 6th in the 800M and Whitney Andrews placed 2nd in 3200M to set a personal best time of 12:50.92.

The Lady Pirates also competed against Scottsburg and Austin last Tuesday evening at Austin High School.  Charlestown finished second to Scottsburg (59) and defeated Austin (42) with a team score of 43.  First place finishes include: 4×800 with 11:20 (Whitney Andrews, Kelsey Lakes, Gabi Gagnon, and Alysha Flaget), 4×400 4:43  (Whitney Andrews, Kelsey Lakes, Gabi Gagnon, and Alysha Flaget), Whitney Andrews 1600M and 3200M, Alysha Flaget 400M and 800M, Jenna Daniel Long Jump 14’7” (personal record).  Second place finishes include: Tayte Mosinger 300H 53.6 (personal record), Jenna Daniel shot put and 100M, Gabi Gagnon 1600M.  “Our distance runners ran well, and placed respectively in their events. Many girls contributed in their events which helped us to edge out Austin for second place by 1 point”, commented Coach Carroll.

Another Successful Pirate Relays….is in the Books

Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Track & Field hosted the annual Pirate Relays event Wednesday evening at Dutch Reis Field.  Pirate Relay events include the field events of shot put, long jump, high jump and discus; and track relay events including a shuttle hurdle relay, a sprint medley relay, and a 400-800 & 1600 meter relay.

The Lady Pirates tied Scottsburg for third place, with 50 points, in the overall team score competition; behind first place Corydon (86) and Crawford County (62).  Austin finished fourth with 42 points and North Harrison in fifth with forty team points.

The Lady Pirates were able to fill an entry in every event, which please Lady PIrate Coach Kim Carrolll citing that “it has been many years since Charlestown has had enough girls to accomplish this”.  “Some girls participated in events they had never done before, making it a great team effort”, concluded Coach Carroll.  Individual Lady Pirate second place finishes included the team of Jenna Daniel and Alysha Flaget in the Long Jump, and the team of Gabi Gagnon, Kelsey Lakes, Whitney Andrews, and Alysha Flaget in the 1600 meter Relay.

The Pirates finished in a tie with Crawford County for second place, each with scoring a total of 64 points.  The Scottsburg boys finished first (88) and set a new meet record in the Boys Shuttle Hurdles with a time of 29.58 seconds (the old record was 29.60 seconds).  Individual Pirate finishes included the Long Jump team of Eli Daniel and Garrett Woods, who finished first with a distance of 37′ 4″.  The Pirate 4 x 100 meter Relay Team of Tyler Olsen, TJ Jackson, Eli Daniel, and Trey Woodward also collected a first place finish with a time of 46.82 seconds.

Pirates Win Providence 4 way, Lady Pirates Set New Record

Charlestown Pirate and Lady Pirate Track & Field joined Henryville and Rock Creek at Providence High School Tuesday evening for a four-way meet.  The highlight of the meet was the Lady Pirate 4 x 800 meter relay team of Gabi Gagnon, Kelsey Lakes, Whitney Andrews and Alysha Flaget setting a new school record.  The new record time of 11:19.8, smashed the previously record by over 30 seconds.  Additionally, Charlestown Lady Pirate first place finishes included Jenna Daniel (14’3″ Long Jump), Alysha Flaget (400 meter Dash 1:06.7), and Whitney Andrews (3200 meter run 13:26.3).  Whitney Andrews also placed second in the 1600 meter run and Alysha Flaget finished second in the 800 meter run.  “All runners had excellent performances this early in the season.  The freshmen did an excellent job in their first high school meet” commented Girls Head Coach Kim Carroll.  The Lady Pirates finished third with 54.5 points, behind first place Henryville (72) and Providence (62.5).

The Pirates had a very successful meet, finishing first with 83 points, ahead of Providence (57), and Henryville (53).  Charlestown first place finishers included Eli Daniel (Long Jump 44’11” and High Jump 6’1″); Steven Delaney (110 meter Hurdles 00:17.5); Charlestown 4 x 100 meter relay team of Eli Daniel, Tyler Olsen, TJ Jackson, and Trey Woodward.  Second place finishers were Daniel in the Long Jump, Jackson in the 400 m Dash, Mitchell Wurtsmith in the 110 m High Hurdles, Olsen in the 200 m Dash, Derek Walters in the 1600 m Run, Delaney in the 300 m Low Hurdles, and the 4 x 400 m Relay team of Jackson, Delaney,  Andrew Shaw, and Peyton Bradshaw.  “We had several outstanding performances tonight and I am extremely proud of all the runners.  Great way to start what looks to be an exciting season in track at Charlestown”, commented Boys Head Coach Brian Stewart.

Charlestown will next host the annual Pirate Relays on April 22nd.

Lady Pirate Flaget with Good Run at Inferno

Charlestown Lady Pirate Alysha Flaget recently competed at the 5th Annual Jeffersonville High School Inferno Tack Meet last Saturday. Alysha ran the 800 mter run in 2:37.08, placing 8th overall; running against some very strong area competition.
The meet included over 600 competitors.  This was Alysha’s first meet of the season; and finished only 2 seconds off her personal best time of last year. “She ran well, is looking to improve her times during the season” commented Coach Kim Carroll.  Congratulations to Alysha and good luck the rest of the season..
