Lady Pirates Drop Conference Game at Salem

The Pirates started the week off a bit rocky falling to Salem 8-1.

Being down 4-0 at halftime, the Pirates were able to put one up on the board in the second half by Tayte Motsinger. It ended up being 8-1 at the end.

“It wasn’t our night. Sometimes nothing goes your way. But, you can always pride yourself on effort and never giving up, and our kids kept playing until the end. In situations like that, that’s all we ask for.”

The Pirates take on Silver Creek at their place Thursday night at 6:00pm for the last regular season game.

Lady Pirates Drop MSC Game Against Warriorettes

The Lady Pirates ended up on the wrong side of the score in their last home opener of the season to Scottsburg 5-3 despite out shooting them 19-13.

Scottsburg caught the Pirates sleeping at the start of the game as Katie Horstman #11 dribbled behind their back line and found the back of the net.

“We came out flat tonight. We had energy in our warm up and seemed ready to go, but when the first whistle blew, we were asleep.” Scottsburg scored again ten minutes later, putting up an early 2-0 lead.

The Pirates are a team full of grit and fight, and it showed when Ilayah Keltner won the ball off of a goal kick and scored in the 15th minute narrowing the lead to 2-1. Scottsburg’s Mara Colson snuck in behind the Pirate defense in the 20th minute, taking the lead back up to a 2 goal margin at 3-1. Carrley Shreve put the Pirates back in the game with eight minutes to go in the first half, following up Tayte Motsinger’s rebound.

“It wasn’t the best half of soccer we have put together. We were a little disorganized in the back to start, and needed to figure out how to deal with their speed. Most importantly, we needed to find that extra energy and fire throughout our entire team to play a better second half.”

In the 68th minute, Scottsburg scored off of an own goal off a corner that wasn’t cleared out of the box. Tayte Motsinger answered back two minutes later, putting the score 4-3. Scottsburg sealed their win at 5-3 with five minutes to go.

“We are proud of our kids second half. They fought back and played with a lot more energy. It was tough losing this one on senior night, but we played hard.” Brenley Berger made 12 saves for us tonight, stopping a few breakaways to keep the score close.

The seniors that were honored tonight for the Pirates were Cheyenne Hawk, Alexia Castro, Ivon Guzman, and Stephanie Fielding, who had her best game of the season tonight.

The Lady Pirates will play North Harrison on the road this Thursday 9-22.

Jeff Squeezes Past Lady Pirate Soccer 2-1

In a close heated second half, the Pirates end up falling short to the Red Devils 2-1 at Home on Wednesday night.

The Devils got on the board early, scoring within the first seven minutes. They came out firing with speed, aggression, and willingness to win every 50-50 battle. The Pirates woke up about mid way through the first half evening the score at 1. Tayte Motsinger found an opening in the midfield and took it alone beating the Devil defense and finding the back of the net.

Jeffersonville continued to possess and create opportunities, finishing on one of them to be up at halftime 2-1. Jeffersonville goals were scored by Hazel Dickey and Kylee Luce.

The Pirates weren’t going down without a fight, and played a tough second half, nearly putting a few away, but came up empty handed. “We are very proud of our girls for the way they battled back in the second half. We fought hard until the very end, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Jeffersonville was a great challenge for us, as they connected passes and kept possession far more than the other teams we have played against. ”

Brenley Berger was busy for us in goal tonight and kept the score close as she made 12 saves from Jeffersonville’s 21 shot count.

“Every single kid that played in the second half for us gave 110%. Freshman Machayla Hawkins was a fireball up top for us tonight and lifted our energy in the second half.” We are excited to see improvements being made and how much our team has learned so far this season.

The Pirates will play at our last home on Tuesday against Scottsburg at 6:00pm.

Lady Pirates Drop 6-5 Decision at Southwestern

In a tough game, the Lady Pirates came up just short with a 6-5 loss Tuesday in their first away game of the season.

Southwestern started the scoring early 6 minutes into the game. At minute 15 Tayte Motsinger put the Pirates on the board, with sophomore Carrley Shreve putting one in the back of the net 1 minute later assisted from classmate Jessaca Rawson.

Southwestern did not go away quietly, as they stepped up their game and put three in before half by their number 10, Kayla Adkins. Going into the half, the Pirates were down 4-2. “Their speed up top really challenged us in the first half. We needed to find a way for our back line to step up higher to put pressure on their front line before they had a chance to turn.”

The Lady Pirates came out strong in the second half as Motsinger scored 3 minutes in with Carrley Shreve assisting Ilayah Keltner 4 minutes later, at the 47 minute mark of the game. Keltner put the Pirates ahead 5-4 as she found the back of the net after Ivon Guzman won the ball out of the air from the back line off a Southwestern punt.

Scoring off a PK with only 13:29 left, the score was once again even at 5 a piece. With only four minutes to go in the game, Southwestern found a gap in the Pirate defense and placed it past Berger in goal to win the game 6-5. Berger came up big for the Pirates tonight with 23 saves, keeping it a close match between the two teams.

“Our kids played a great second half. Kelsey and I addressed what we needed to fix from the first half at halftime, and our kids executed the game plan. We ended up on the wrong side of the score tonight, but that’s soccer and that’s sports. Hoping to be able to take the momentum from the second half tonight into tomorrow’s game against Jeffersonville’s Varsity squad. ”

The Pirates return home September 14 at 6:00pm.
