The Lady Pirates ended up on the wrong side of the score in their last home opener of the season to Scottsburg 5-3 despite out shooting them 19-13.
Scottsburg caught the Pirates sleeping at the start of the game as Katie Horstman #11 dribbled behind their back line and found the back of the net.
“We came out flat tonight. We had energy in our warm up and seemed ready to go, but when the first whistle blew, we were asleep.” Scottsburg scored again ten minutes later, putting up an early 2-0 lead.
The Pirates are a team full of grit and fight, and it showed when Ilayah Keltner won the ball off of a goal kick and scored in the 15th minute narrowing the lead to 2-1. Scottsburg’s Mara Colson snuck in behind the Pirate defense in the 20th minute, taking the lead back up to a 2 goal margin at 3-1. Carrley Shreve put the Pirates back in the game with eight minutes to go in the first half, following up Tayte Motsinger’s rebound.
“It wasn’t the best half of soccer we have put together. We were a little disorganized in the back to start, and needed to figure out how to deal with their speed. Most importantly, we needed to find that extra energy and fire throughout our entire team to play a better second half.”
In the 68th minute, Scottsburg scored off of an own goal off a corner that wasn’t cleared out of the box. Tayte Motsinger answered back two minutes later, putting the score 4-3. Scottsburg sealed their win at 5-3 with five minutes to go.
“We are proud of our kids second half. They fought back and played with a lot more energy. It was tough losing this one on senior night, but we played hard.” Brenley Berger made 12 saves for us tonight, stopping a few breakaways to keep the score close.
The seniors that were honored tonight for the Pirates were Cheyenne Hawk, Alexia Castro, Ivon Guzman, and Stephanie Fielding, who had her best game of the season tonight.
The Lady Pirates will play North Harrison on the road this Thursday 9-22.
