The Charlestown Lady Pirate Basketball program will be hosting the Pre-Game Tailgating Grille before every home football game this season. The Grille will operate from 5pm to 7pm prior to each 2015 Pirate Football home contest, and selling Ribeyes, Angus Burgers, Smoked Sausages, Brats, Chips and Drinks. The Charlestown Lady Pirate Soccer team, led by new head coach Terrance Greer, fell to Jennings County 0-7 in their season opener Thursday night. The Lady Pirates never gave up and competed well against a good Jenning County team. “Great effort by the girls. They never gave up,” commented Head Coach Terrance Greer. The Lady Pirates (0-1 overall; 0-0 MSC) will be back in action next Thursday night, traveling to Southern High School in Louisville.

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Golf team competed against Silver Creek, Borden and Eastern on Thursday night in a match played at Hidden Creek Golf Course. Emma Sellers, Grace Sellers, Madison Scnell, and Brianna McCutcheon all improved their scores. Charlestown lowered their team score 15 strokes from Tuesday to Thursday night’s match. “The girls were contacting the ball better yesterday, and are improving their fundamentals each week,” commented Head Coach Kim Carroll. The Lady Pirates will be back in action on August 31st in a match against Providence.
The Charlestown Pirate Tennis team competed against their rival down Country Road 403 Thursday night. The Pirates were competitive against the best team in the sectional, according to Coach Matthews, but fell to Silver Creek 1-4. At one singles, Josh Newton defeated Miles Matthews (Junior) 6-2, 6-3. At two singles, Tyler Massie (Senior) defeated Noah Eckert 7-5, 6-0. At three singles, Jacob Bishop defeated Trey Woodward (Junior) 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. At one doubles, Nate Eckert and Jack Hawkins defeated Steven Delaney (Sophomore) and Josh Copeland (Junior) 7-5, 7-6 (11-9). At two doubles, Cooper Cundiff and Sammy Padgett defeated Austin Smith (Senior) and Jacob Doherty (Sophomore) 6-2, 6-1. “Matches were competitive. We have to learn how to close out sets and matches when we have that opportunity. We are close to being a sectional contender. Silver Creek is the best team in the sectional,” commented Head Coach Scott Matthews following the loss. The Pirate Tennis team (1-1 overall; 0-1 MSC) will be back in action Monday night, traveling to South Central High School.
Charlestown Cross Country competed in Seymour’s ten team meet Thursday evening. The girls were led by medal winner Sophomore Katie Rhodes in 10th place in a time of 22:03. The Lady Pirates finished 6th as a team. “There were a lot of nerves for our first meet, but I’m so proud of everyone’s performances”, commented Head Coach Jerry Doyle.
The boys were led by Senior Andrew Shaw, just one spot out of medal contention, in 16th place. The Pirates finished 7th as a team. “I am so happy that they (the boys team) can compete as a team this year! We’re already looking forward to this Saturdays meet at the Bulldog Classic at Prosser in New Albany!
Last night’s storms and heavy rain washed out any possible tennis match last night for the Pirates against Silver Creek. Therefore, the Silver Creek Athletic Department announced that the match will be made up tonight, Thursday, August 20th, at Silver Creek starting at 5:00pm. The match is the first conference match for the Pirates (1-0 overall; 0-0 MSC) and the first match overall for the Dragons.
