Pirates Rout Mustangs in Season Opener

jamalLong14The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team opened the Jason Connell coaching era with a 69-39 win over rival New Washington Wednesday evening in the CHS Sports Arena.  The Pirates enjoyed a 44-18 halftime lead enroute to the season opener victory.  Charlestown was led by Eli Daniel’s 13 points courtesy 5 of 9 shooting plus a trey.  Junior Lex Smith 11 points, including a perfect 5 of 5 from the field.  Gage Martin and Jamal Long added nine each respectively.  “Tonight was a great night for our program.  We got off to a great start because of our defense and rebounding, which was a total team effort due to playing together.  When you have nine players score, its a great night, very proud of our effort,” commented new Pirate Head Coach Jason Connell.  The JV Pirates also started their season out on a winning note, dispatching their Mustang counterparts 56-38 in game one of the evening.  The Pirates will open MSC play hosting arch-rival Silver Creek Tuesday evening in the CHS Sports Arena.

Charlestown Throttles Lady Mustangs 82-28

The Lady Pirates, since losing seven out of last eight meetings with New Washington, came into Tuesday’s game alittle bit hungry.  The final score was just one indication that Charlestown had had enough losing to their rival neighbors to the east.  New Washington’s youth and inexperience caused more than just match-up problems with the Lady Pirates; Charlestown’s defensive advantages all but smothered the few opportunities presented.  Charlestown (3-0), who celebrated the tenth anniversary of the 2005 girls basketball team that won the program’s fourth Regional crown; honored the team by bettering their 74-19 final over the Lady Mustangs (1-4).  Charlestown jumped out to a 19-0 start before taking a 41-8 halftime advantage to the locker room.  The Lady Pirates were led in scoring by Senior Kaitlynn Henning’s 35 points and was named CPPSB’s Coyle Player of the Game.  Senior Justice Burdin added a very solid 15 points; while Senior Shelby Goedeker finished with nine points and some of the game’s toughest defense.  Lexi Logsdon added eight for the winning team.  The Lady Pirates’ 82-28 victory was the greatest winning margin of victory since the fifty-five drumming of Clarksville in 2010.  The Lady Pirates will travel to Henryville this Saturday and to Austin next Wednesday.

Henning Named a Subway Player of the Week

Charlestown Lady Pirate Basketball standout Kaitlynn Henning is this week’s Subway IDCA District 3 Player of the Week!  The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, during each week of the season, pick three high school boys and three high school girls basketball players throughout Indiana who recently exhibited outstanding performances on the court.  Henning was honored after she averaged 25.5 points and 3.5 steals in a pair of season-opening victories for Charlestown.  She erupted for 31 points, four rebounds, three assists and six steals in the Pirates’ opener, a 58-38 victory over Corydon Central.  Later in the week, Henning followed with 20 points, one rebound, two assists and one steal in a 50-42 win over South Central (Elizabeth). Over both games, Henning was 20-of-28 from the field, 2-of-5 on 3-pointers and 9-of-14 on free throws.  This is the seventh season for the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Week program and the third season it is presented by Subway Restaurants of Indiana, a banner sponsor of the IBCA. Subway, in its fifth season as an IBCA sponsor, encourages athletes to “train hard and eat fresh.”  For more information, log on to www.ibcacoaches.com.

Pirate Great Returns to CHS Wednesday after 60 yrs.

2 Parker black and whiteHenry Parker returns home to his alma mater, Charlestown High School, November 26, 2014, to celebrate his historical single-scoring output of 42-points that took place 60 years ago. He was the Pirates’ first hoops cager to individually score that phenomenal amount of points in a single hardwood game.
The hoops clash was at the old Jonathan Jennings Gym, January 29, 1955 on the city’s square against a highly touted high school team from Kentucky. The Louisville Flaget Braves of Head Coach Jim Huter was the victim. Parker and his fellow Pirates manhandled the Braves, 100-60!
The final score also marked another first for a Pirates’ team. The 1955 Pirates, headed by the legendary Kentucky high school coach, Letcher B. Norton, hit the century mark!
In 2017, the Charlestown High School Pirates basketball program will celebrate 100 years of hoops action, and the return of Henry Parker to his alma mater presents only the beginning of a series of special Pirate tributes to other extraordinary coaches, players and teams, and their incredible moments on the hardwood.
There will be a “Meet-and-Greet Henry Parker” in the Charlestown High School Sports Arena where fans can extend their well-wishes and share some of their own reflections of Parker’s feat on that historical night 60 years ago.
Henry Parker will be recognized before the start of the Pirates clash with cross town rival New Washington Mustangs.  Junior Varsity will tip at 6:00 pm and Varsity at approximately 7:30 pm; the game is the 2014-15 regular season opener for the Pirates…under new head coach Jason Connell.
