IHSAA Announces New Sectional Alignments for the next Two Seasons

The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the new sectional alignments for Basketball, Football, Baseball, Softball, Volleyball and Soccer Monday.  The new alignment will be used for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school year athletic seasons.  Charlestown remains in Class 3A and generally in the same sectionals as currently assigned; with a few new opponents due to school size fluctuation and recent success factors.  The following outline the new and up-coming sectional alignments for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years:

Baseball:  #30-Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, North Harrison, Salem, Scottsburg, & Silver Creek;

Boys Basketball:  #30-Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, North Harrison, Salem, Scottsburg, & Silver Creek;

Girls Basketball:  #30-Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, North Harrison, Salem, Scottsburg, & Silver Creek;

Football:  #31-Brown County, Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, Heritage Hills, North Harrison, Salem & Southridge;

Softball:  #30-Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, North Harrison, Salem, Scottsburg, & Silver Creek;

Boys Soccer:  #28-Charlestown, Corydon, Floyd Central, Jeffersonville, New Albany, & Silver Creek;

Girls Soccer:  #28-Charlestown, Corydon, Floyd Central, Jeffersonville, New Albany, & Silver Creek; and

Volleyball:  #30-Brownstown, Charlestown, Corydon, Providence, Salem, Scottsburg, & Silver Creek.

Lady Pirate Softball Thumps Austin, 15-2

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team traveled to Austin for an important conference clash with the Lady Eagles.  Charlestown (9-4 & 3-2 MSC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings; highlighted by a Mackenize Smith solo in the park home run.  Austin added two runs in the fourth, before Charlestown put the game away with a seven run sixth inning before winning 15-2.  Charlestown played twenty-one players during the game.  Junior pitcher Carly Price got the win from the circle, allowing only two hits, and retiring ten batters.  Smith finished 2 for 3 at the plate (including a double and a triple) with two runs, Leah Sherrill went 2 for 4, and Kaitlynn Henning finished 2 for 3 with a double.  The Lady Pirates are back in action Tuesday at Corydon, in an extremely important MSC game; which will be broadcasted by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting beginning at 5:00 pm.

Lady Pirates Solid Versus Seymour

CarlyPriceThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team stepped out of conference play Monday evening; traveling to Seymour to challenge the Lady Owls.  The Lady Pirates (8-4) started slow, allowing Seymour to plate two runs in the bottom of the first.  Charlestown answered in the third, also scoring two and tying the hosts until the top of the fourth.  Brooke Adams, Kaitlynn Henning, Carly Price, Bethany Hall, and Kendall Cline all singled in the fourth to push their lead to 6-2.  Seymour answered with one run in the sixth before Charlestown plated two more runs in the top of the seven on four additional hits.  Carly Price pitched the complete game and got the win from the circle; as the Lady Pirates topped Seymour 8-3.  Price allowed only five hits and three earned runs, along with striking out three.  Leah Sherrill finished the game 3 of 4 from the plate, including a triple and two RBI’s; earning her the Coyle Chevy, GMC, Buick and Choyle Nissan Player of the Game.  Carly Price finished two of four with two RBIs, while Mackenzie Smith also finished two for four.  “I thought we started slow, but our defense really gave us chances as the game continued.  There’s alot of softball still to be played”, commented Heach Coach Kevin Zollman.  Seymour fell to 6-4, however have chalked up wins against Bedford-North Lawrence, Jeffersonville, Columbus North, and Colmbus East.  The Charlestown Junior Varsity team also got the win in the night-cap, defeating Seymour 10-8.  Lady Pirate Softball is back in action Thursday at Austin.

Lady Pirates Double Up Louisville PRP

SoftballThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team has had success with the non-conference Louisville programs it has played this year.  After dropping their season opener versus Holy Cross, Charlestown has since defeated Louisville Eastern, Fern Creek and now Pleasure Ridge Park (PRP) twice.  The Lady Pirates rallied in the sixth to beat PRP 4-3 in Friday evening’s game one of a double-header; then held on to win the second game 8-7 and improve to 7-4 on the season.  The Lady Pirates will travel to Seymour (6-2) on Monday.

Kaitlynn Henning got Charlestown on the board in the second inning of game #1 with an RBI single that plated Brooke Adams and tied the game at one all.  The Panthers added two runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead until the bottom of the sixth; when Kendall Cline got the rally started with a lead off triple.  PRP walked the next Lady Pirate batter, Erin Kimbrell, before Brooke Adams doubled to score Cline and Kimbrell and tie the score at three.  Leah Sherrill, with two away, got her only hit of the game on an RBI single to plate Mackenzie Smith for the winning run after holding PRP at bay in the top of the seventh.  Carly Price got the win, striking out three Panther batters.

Charlestown jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second of game #2.  The Lady Pirates loaded the bases after Cline got a lead off single, Adams reached after being hit by a pitch, and Henning was walked.  Smith, Sherrill and Price each singled to plate all five runs.  PRP answered, scoring four runs of their own in the top of the third, for a 5-4 game.  Charlestown pushed the score to 7-4 in the bottom of the fourth when Bethany Hall doubled to score Sherrill and Price.  PRP answered again, plating three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the score at seven.  After holding PRP in the top of the seventh, Lexi Logsdon, the winning run, reached base on balls when leading off in the bottom of the seventh.  Logsdon was then plated for the win when Hall followed with a single and Kendall Cline hit a RBI walk-off double to end the game with a final score of 8-7.  Leah Sherrill had another big game at the plate, finishing 3 for 4; while Mackenzie Smith, Bethany Hall, and Kendall Cline all finished 2 for 4.  Cline started in the circle before Price got the save in relief of Cline in the fourth.

Lady Pirates Back to Form, Beat Clarksville 10-0

SherrillHRCvilleThe Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team traveled to Clarksville Thursday and ended a two game skid with a 10-0 conference win in five innings.  Bethany Hall got the Lady Pirates rolling in the second when she reached second on a Lady General error; but plated two runs.  Leah Sherrill then put the Lady Pirates in overdrive with a right center field home run that also scored two runs.  Charlestown scored five in the second, then two more in the top of the third when Hall and Kimbrell each batted in runs to make the score 7-0.  The Lady Pirates stayed in cruise control mode, deciding the game for the Lady Generals in the fifth inning.  Carly Price pitched the win from the circle, with six strikeouts, and allowing only three hits.  Lexi Logsdon and Bethany Hall both finished three for three from the plate, Erin Kimbrell two for two, Carly Price two for three, and Leah Sherrill two for four…including the home run.  The Lady Pirates (4-3 & 2-2 MSC) return to action Friday hosting Louisville’s Pleasure Ridge Park HS for a Varsity doubleheader beginning at 5:00 pm.

Lady Pirates Cruise to 5-0 Shut Out Victory Over Madison

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team improved to 4-2 on the season as they had little problem defeating the team visiting from Madison High School.  The Lady Pirates got their five runs courtesy of six hits, Mackenzie Smith, Leah Sherrill (2), Carly Price (2), and Lexi Logsdon.  Carly Price got the shut out win from the circle (2-1), pitching a complete game in 6 1/2 innings.  Madison (1-6) twice loaded the bases; however the Lady Pirate defense caused them to strand all their runners off four hits.  Leah Sherrill finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate, including a double; Carly Price also finished 2 for 3 and hit a RBI triple in the bottom of the third.  Lexi Logsdon finished 1 for 3 at the plate; however led off in the third with a big triple that begun a two run inning for the Lady Pirates.  Charlestown will next travel to New Albany on Monday for a non-conference clash with the Lady Bulldogs, a game that will be broadcasted live by Pirate Pride Sports Broadcasting beginning at 4:45 pm on www.CPPSB.com.

Lady Kats Rally to Beat Lady Pirates, 7-6 in Nine

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball team (3-2 & 1-1 MSC) hosted the North Harrison Lady Kats Wednesday evening and jumped out to a 6-2 lead before allowing sixth inning rally by the visitors.  North Harrison tied the game in the top of the sixth, scored the winning run off two ninth inning doubles, then held Charlestown in the bottom of the ninth to steal the win and move to 2-4 & 1-0 MSC.  Mackenzie Smith finished the game three of four, including a double, plating two runs; Carly Price two of three, including a double and a run scored; and Kaitlynn Henning finished two for four.  Carly Price began the game in the circle and was relieved by Kendall Cline in the middle of the top of the sixth inning.  The Lady Pirate Junior Varsity team topped North Harrison in the second game, 6-5.  The Lady Pirates are scheduled to travel to Scottsburg on Thursday for a 5:00 pm start.
