TONIGHT: Girls Track Regionals & Softball Sectional

Your Charlestown Lady Pirates have a busy night tonight (Tuesday, May 23rd) as seven Lady Pirate Track & Field members will travel to Bloomington North High School for the 6:00 pm Regional meet.  Charlestown Girls Track Regional qualifiers competing tonight in Bloomington are Jenna Daniel, in the Shot put event; DeAsia King, in the Discus event; Tayte Motsinger, in the 100 meter hurdles event; Ashley Wright, in the 400 meter Dash event; and the Charlestown 4×100 relay team of Ilayah Keltner, Jenna Daniel, Mackenzie Byrnes, and Carley Conway. The Bloomington North Regional meet is fed by qualifiers from the following Sectionals:  Bloomington North, Jeffersonville, Seymour, and Terre Haute North.  Good luck Lady Pirates, congratulations on your Regional honor, time to bring home some State bids!

Additionally tonight, the Lady Pirate Softball team (7-12 & 5-4 MSC) will begin Class 3A Sectional play tonight, at approximately 7:30 pm, when the match up with Corydon Central.  This year’s Class 3A Sectional #30 is being hosted by Scottsburg High School, and is taking place just off Indiana 56, behind Meyer Gym via Jim Barley Way, just east of downtown.  The Lady Pirates narrowly defeated Corydon during their regular season match-up; best of luck Charlestown in defeating Corydon tonight and advancing to Wednesday’s Sectional Semi-Final.

Cancellations Tonight

The softball game between Charlestown and Eastern Pekin, and the baseball game between Charlestown and Brownstown Central has been cancelled due to field conditions. Softball will make their game up between Eastern Pekin during the West Washington Invitational on Saturday, May 20th. The Charlestown vs. Brownstown Central baseball game will be made up on Thursday, May 18th at 5:30pm.

Please be advised that the softball game at home against West Washington and the Track & Field invitational at North Harrison are both CANCELLED for tonight due to the threat of severe weather.

Softball will travel to West Washington on Saturday, May 20th to play in their invitational. More information TBA.

Smith Signs to Play Softball at Hanover College

SmithSigningRecently Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball Senior Mackenzie Smith gathered with family, friends and coaches to sign a letter of intent to play softball and attend Hanover College next school year.  During the past two seasons, Mackenzie has maintained a .505 batting average, logged 55 hits, 16 RBI’s and 47 runs for Charlestown Lady Pirate Softball.  Seated in the photo with Mackenzie are Assistant Coach Jeff Webster, her parents Lady Pirate Head Coach John Smith and Marci Smith, and Charlestown HS Athletic Director Chad Gilbert.  Mackenzie was also joined by three of her travel play coaches, standing from left to right Paige Dickey (holding Emery Lieberman), Dennie Jenkins, and Chelsea Jordan.  Mackenzie plans to major in accounting at Hanover and was attracted to the college because of its location, being close to home and its size.  When asked for advice for others wanting to play sports in college, Mackenzie commented the “putting in the work goes a long way and having confidence along the way, and not letting adversity get in the way.  Congratulations to Mackenzie Smith and best of luck at Softball at the next level.

Lady Pirate Softball Dominates Scottsburg 11-2

The Charlestown Lady Pirates traveled to Scottsburg (2-6) Thursday evening for an important MSC matchup with the Warriorettes.  Hot pitching by Kendall Cline and hot hitting by half the team allowed the Lady Pirates to dominate host Scottsburg to a 11-2 final.  Charlestown scored their 11 runs off 14 hits, committing only two errors; including jumping out to a 7 run lead after three innings.  Charlestown improved their record to 3-3 and 1-1 MSC play; as Cline got the win from the circle, pitching seven complete innings, striking out ten, walking one and allowing one earned run.  Lady Pirate Lexi Eblen led Charlestown offensively, going 3-4 from the plate, including two RBIs.  Charlestown’s Shirlee Hayes finished 2-4 from the plate, including a double, three RBIs and three runs.  Taylor Glover added another RBI for Charlestown while finishing 2-3 from the plate.  Charlestown returns to action Monday at New Albany.

All Events Cancelled – Thursday

Due to the rain yesterday and cold temperatures, all Pirate & Lady Pirate events have been cancelled for this evening. This includes JV Baseball at Lanesville, Softball at Corydon, Track & Field at Salem and Girls Tennis at North Harrison. The Charlestown High School Athletic Department has announced the following makeup dates for the postponed events:

Lady Pirate Softball at Corydon Central will now be played on Tuesday, April 18th starting at 5:00pm.

Lady Pirate Tennis at North Harrison will now be played on Friday, April 21st starting at 4:30pm.

Makeup dates for all other cancelled events have not been determined as of now.

Smith named CJ Athlete of the Week

On Tuesday, the Courier Journal announced that Charlestown Softball player Mackenzie Smith had been named as their recipient of the Courier Journal Athlete of the Week presented by Norton Sports Health. Mackenzie led the Lady Pirates to a win in their season opener against New Washington on March 22nd, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs and scoring three runs in their 12-0 win over the Lady Mustangs.
