Pirates Ganged Up On, but Survive at Corydon 13-6

ChesterGaddieCharlestown has gotten the best of Corydon over their eleven football meetings, 9-2 counting Friday nights win; however sometimes the vacuum of outside forces ruins a good rivalry game, like Friday night at Corydon.  The Pirates were penalized eleven times, totaling 125 yards; while Corydon was penalized eight times for 62 yards….but no one had control of the game-especially the officials.  Words wouldn’t justify the impact the officials had upon the “game”…so enough about the ugly-here’s the good and the bad.  Charlestown scored first, on their second drive of the game, when Garrett Woods caught a 37 yard TD pass from QB Tristan Chester to cap a five play 71 yard drive.  Jose Arredondo added the point after to make it a 7-0 advantage, which lasted until 8:34 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Wind driven rain and falling temperatures complicated field footing and the passing offense of both teams.  A bad Corydon fourth quarter punt set the Pirate offense up on the Panther 25 yard line when Chester went to work again, hitting Cameron Hopson for an apparent 25 yard touchdown pass; but it was overruled as Hopson was called down on the three yard line-even though he caught the ball at the two yard line and back stepped into the end zone.  Chester run the ball in for a touchdown on the next play, however the two point conversion attempt failed.  Corydon (5-2 & 4-1 MSC) scored on their next drive, greatly assisted by three unexplained unsportsman-like conduct flags against the Pirates.  “Unexplained” in this situation should be defined as the officials unwilling to explain the penalty circumstances to Charlestown coaches.  The Panthers attempted a two point conversion run, which was snuffed behind the line of scrimmage by the Pirates…..Charlestown 13-Corydon 6 with 4:54 remaining.  The Pirates recovered the Panthers ensuing on-side kick and were able to run the clock out to end the game.  Charlestown finished the game with a balanced 237 total yards of offense (132 on the ground  and 105 in the air); while holding the Panthers to 198 total yards of offense (162 on the ground).  Antonyo Gaddie’s returning (from injury) numbers finalized with 103 yards on 25 carries.  Garrett Woods finished with four catches totaling 64 yards.  The Pirates (6-1 & 5-1 MSC) return home next Friday to host Providence on Senior Night in the Bone Yard.

Hopson & Parker Enter CHS Recordbook

SethParkerNewPirate Football’s Senior wide receiver Cameron Hopson and Pirate Cross Country’s Sophomore runner Seth Parker; both after big performances over the past two weeks, have earned spots in the Charlestown High School Recordbook.

Parker, while running a personal best time of 18:11 in Tuesday’s New Washingtion Invitational, landed on the CHS All-Time Top Thirty 5k Runners list in the Recordbook.

Hopson, while catching three touchdowns during Pirate Football’s CameronHopsonNEWwin at Salem last Friday, tied Charlestown’s existing record for Most TD Receptions in a Game; also held by Joe Crank versus Floyd Central in 1979.

Congratulations to both Cameron Hopson and Seth Parker for their outstanding work in competition; while leaving their record-setting mark in Charlestown Pirate Athletics.

Chester Sets New Passing Record vs Salem

TristanChesterSenior Quarterback Tristan Chester was put to test last Friday night, when the Salem Lions felt content to concentrate on stopping the Pirate rushing game.  Recognizing the situation, the Pirates took advantage by giving Chester plenty of passing plays to exercise his throwing arm……and exercise he did.  Not only did the Pirates rout the Lions 40-8, but Chester completed 18 of 23 pass attempts (totaling 253 yards); breaking a 2006 school record.  Chester now holds the “Most Pass Completions in a Game” school football record with 18, surpassing Andrew Smith’s 17 completions set in a 2006 meeting with North Harrison.  Through six games this season, Chester has completed 58 of 93 passes (63%) for 885 yards, and thrown 11 touchdowns.  Congratulations to Senior QB Tristan Chester, last week’s Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMC & Coyle Nissan Offensive Co-Player of the Game; and new Charlestown Pirate Football school record holder for most pass completions in a game.

The Pirates (5-1 & 4-1 MSC) are back in action this Friday in a very important conference showdown at Corydon (5-1 & 4-0 MSC).  Kick-off Friday is scheduled for 7:00 pm, for a game that promises to be another emotional contest.  DON’T MISS IT PIRATE NATION!

Pirates’ Air Attack Too Much For Salem

10614107_923914564290458_4967248049561445341_nCharlestown played spoiler to Salem’s homecoming Friday Night, improving their all-time series with the Lions to 25-21 with a 40-8 romp.  The Pirates (5-1 & 4-1 MSC), and again without leading tailback Antonyo Gaddie (healing a toe injury), switched to a very effective passing attack when Salem’s plan revealed an “all-in” stop run defense.  Senior QB Tristan Chester was cool, comfortable and very accurate in the pocket, completing 18 of 23 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns.  Charlestown ran the ball a mere 30 times for just over 100 yards, and mainly to cap big pass plays drives for touchdowns.  Jarren Anderson and Syd Gieseking lead the Pirates on the ground, accumulating nearly 50 yards and a touchdown a piece.  Charlestown put the first two touchdowns of the game in the first, one a 51 yard pass from Chester to Cameron Hopson along the edge of the end zone.  Salem put their eight points on the board midway through the second when they executed a halfback pass for a 41 yard touchdown that caught the Pirates off guard.  Chester answered with the Pirates before the half, hitting Hopson again for a 21 and a 12 yard strike to take a 26-8 lead at the break.  The twelve yard touchdown to Hopson was courtesy of a Salem turnover with just seconds remaining in the first half.  The Pirate defense dominated in the second half while Chester led the Pirate offense on long drives for touchdowns in the third and fourth to cap the 40-8 victory.  Cameron Hopson had a big night, catching six passes for 106 yards and three touchdowns.  Eli Daniel caught 5 for 66 yards and Garrett Woods four for 49 yards.  Chester and Hopson shared offensive player of the game honors while Quiton Fetz tallied 15 tackles and a sack to lock the defensive player of the game honor, sponsored by Coyle Chevy, Buick, GMS & Coyle Nissan.  The Pirates now prepare for Friday’s showdown at Corydon (5-1 & 4-0 MSC); what promises to be another emotional game as Coach Ward returns to the opposite sideline of his ole’ stomping ground.

JV Pirate Football Tops Dragons 7-3

Monday evening, the Charlestown JV Pirate Football (4-1 & 3-1 MSC) team made the short trip down Highway 403 for their turn at the Dragons of Silver Creek.  Silver Creek got on the board first, successfully kicking a 25 yard field goal to cap their first drive of the game.  The Dragons took their 3-0 advantage over the Pirates to the final seconds of the game when Charlestown drove the field to the Creek one yard line; which set up a Justin Farris touchdown run for the winning score.  Calvin McClelland added the point after with just 7 seconds remaining in the game.

Pirate Football is on the road this Friday at Salem (2-3 & 1-3 MSC) for another important Mid-Southern Conference contest.  The Pirates have out scored the Lions on the varsity gridiron 179-11 over their past five meetings.  Friday’s kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm at Salem, and will be broadcasted live by Pirate Pride Sports at www.CPPSB.com beginning at 6:45 pm.
