The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team (1-1 & 0-1 MSC) opened Mid-Southern Conference play Tuesday evening in the CHS Sports Arena, hosting Silver Creek (2-0 & 1-0 MSC). The defending sectional champion Dragons jumped out to a 19-7 lead after one quarter and paced themselves to a 31-12 halftime lead before taking the game with a 57-39 final. The Pirates shot just 33% from the field due to a quick Dragon defense. “Tonight we got off to a very slow start and had a very hard time recovering from that. In the second half we cane out fighting and played a solid half of basketball. We learned a lot about our team and will continue to work to improve” commented Coach Connell after the game. The Pirates were led in scoring by Senior Tristan Chester, who finished with 11, and Lex Smith, who added 9 points. The Pirates are back in action Friday night at Scottsburg.
The Charlestown High School Athletic Department will be recognizing and honoring the 2014 Pirate Football Sectional Championship team before Tuesday’s home Pirate Basketball game versus Silver Creek.
All 2014 Pirate Football players, managers, and coaches will be admitted free and should report to the home court level tunnel at the 10 minute mark of the varsity warm ups.
The Junior Varsity game is scheduled to tip off at 6:00 pm Tuesday, with the Varsity immediately following at approximately 7:30 pm.
The Charlestown Pirate Basketball team opened the Jason Connell coaching era with a 69-39 win over rival New Washington Wednesday evening in the CHS Sports Arena. The Pirates enjoyed a 44-18 halftime lead enroute to the season opener victory. Charlestown was led by Eli Daniel’s 13 points courtesy 5 of 9 shooting plus a trey. Junior Lex Smith 11 points, including a perfect 5 of 5 from the field. Gage Martin and Jamal Long added nine each respectively. “Tonight was a great night for our program. We got off to a great start because of our defense and rebounding, which was a total team effort due to playing together. When you have nine players score, its a great night, very proud of our effort,” commented new Pirate Head Coach Jason Connell. The JV Pirates also started their season out on a winning note, dispatching their Mustang counterparts 56-38 in game one of the evening. The Pirates will open MSC play hosting arch-rival Silver Creek Tuesday evening in the CHS Sports Arena.
Henry Parker returns home to his alma mater, Charlestown High School, November 26, 2014, to celebrate his historical single-scoring output of 42-points that took place 60 years ago. He was the Pirates’ first hoops cager to individually score that phenomenal amount of points in a single hardwood game.
The hoops clash was at the old Jonathan Jennings Gym, January 29, 1955 on the city’s square against a highly touted high school team from Kentucky. The Louisville Flaget Braves of Head Coach Jim Huter was the victim. Parker and his fellow Pirates manhandled the Braves, 100-60!
The final score also marked another first for a Pirates’ team. The 1955 Pirates, headed by the legendary Kentucky high school coach, Letcher B. Norton, hit the century mark!
In 2017, the Charlestown High School Pirates basketball program will celebrate 100 years of hoops action, and the return of Henry Parker to his alma mater presents only the beginning of a series of special Pirate tributes to other extraordinary coaches, players and teams, and their incredible moments on the hardwood.
There will be a “Meet-and-Greet Henry Parker” in the Charlestown High School Sports Arena where fans can extend their well-wishes and share some of their own reflections of Parker’s feat on that historical night 60 years ago.
Henry Parker will be recognized before the start of the Pirates clash with cross town rival New Washington Mustangs. Junior Varsity will tip at 6:00 pm and Varsity at approximately 7:30 pm; the game is the 2014-15 regular season opener for the Pirates…under new head coach Jason Connell.

The Charlestown Basketball Developmental League (CBDL) will host a FREE Basketball Coaching Clinic on Wednesday, October 22nd, from 6-830 PM, at the Charlestown High School. This purpose of this clinic is to help develop all of the basketball players among our community teams ; Schools (Elementary, Middle, High), CBDL, Travel Teams (CYP, CYLP) and our players that are in AAU programs.
Organizers are encouraging all current coaches to attend (all levels), with an open invitation to anyone that might be interested to coach down the line. This may be an opportunity for some prospective coaches to learn a little bit more before they jump into coaching the game, especially if they are sitting on the fence. This coaching clinic will include on-court demonstrations with local players; while performing some of the drills and skills that many of our current coaches use. Diagrams for participants to take notes on along with time for questions and answers will coaches will be made available.
