Home of Pirate Football Player Signs On Sale Wednesday

Show your Pirate Football Pride and the distinction of having a player under your roof.  New “Home of Pirate Football Player” yard signs will be available for all CHS High School, CMS Middle School, and Charlestown Little Pirate youth player families this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30 pm, in front of the high school football field entrance.  These are double sided yard signs (with the adjacent design) at a cost of $10.00 each.  These signs have no dates or years on them so they’ll be good as long as the player continues to play for years to come.  Go Pirate Football at all levels in Charlestown!

Brownstown Street Closure Information of IMPORTANCE

Pirate Nation traveling to Brownstown Central High School this evening, Friday, August 24th, for the huge MSC football clash between the Pirates and the Braves; should be aware that Elm Street (along the visitor side of the football field and the easiest access to Brownstown High School’s north parking lot) will be closed from 6:30 pm thru game’s end.  Pirate Nation is encouraged to park in the North Parking Lot at Brownstown HS, using the routes highlighted in green on the adjacent map (including using High Street to Highview Drive).

According to INDOT, no construction work closures or restrictions exist between Brownstown and Charlestown via I-65 North to Mile Marker 41 (Uniontown), then Indiana 250 west.  The route from I-65 to Seymour and west on US 50 to Brownstown is also reporting construction and restriction free.

However as a reminder, construction continues on I-65 between Sellersburg and Memphis; and for those who like to take Indiana 135 north from Salem to Brownstown, there is a bridge construction lane restriction on that route.

If you can’t make it to tonight’s pivotal game; CHS Student Radio, WPMQ 99.3 FM will broadcast the game live on local radio and via internet stream….find the link at http://piratepride.blue/wpmq.  Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.

Lady Pirate Volleyball Opens with Hard Fought MSC Win

The Charlestown Lady Pirate Volleyball team (1-0 & 1-0 MSC) opened their 2018 season with a well earned and hard fought Mid-Southern Conference victory over the visiting Corydon Central Panthers (3-2) 25-21, 23-25, 25-20, 20-25, & 15-4.  The Lady Pirate Junior Varsity team also outlasted their counterparts (2-1) 25-15, 22-25, & 15-10 in the evening opener.
“Tonight was a hard fought match between two MSC Conference teams. There was lots of good play on both sides of the net, and I’m proud of how this young team played together in their first match of the season. Our program lost 8 seniors and only returned one starter, so most of these players are new to varsity volleyball.  Their composure in a five set match is promising and I’m glad to see how they stuck together and showed some excitement to get the win. This team shows a lot of potential and I’m looking forward to seeing what they can accomplish together. Preliminary stats show that freshman Kyra Sharp led the team in kills with 12 while Kayleigh Smith and Korea Tutt had 6 kills each. Lanae’ Crowe did a nice job setting for us. Peyton Crace contributed 7 kills and Abbi East led the serve reception. Savannah McClellan led the team with 6 aces and had 9 service points in the deciding set. We will work on a few adjustments in practice tomorrow before we play a tough Jeff High squad on Thursday”, summarized Lady Pirate Head Coach Tammy Nuxoll.

Boys Soccer: Varsity Falls-JV Wins Hosting River City

The Charlestown HS Pirate Soccer team hosted the River City Jaguars Tuesday evening on Dutch Reis Field.  The Junior Varsity Pirates were victorious over the visiting Jags 4-2; thanks to Pirate goals by Elijah Cooley (2 goals), Joseph Jensen, and Michael Jewell.  The Varsity team didn’t fare so well, logging a 1-5 setback.  Pirate Bryce Wray scored Charlestown’s one goal at the 38:39 minute mark in the 1st half with an assist from Eric Sipes.  Aric Hooker had 7 saves, and the Pirates had 14 shots with 11 on goal; while the River City Jaguars had 23 shots with 13 on goal.

“We started our season with a bad loss.  I did not see what I expected from the players, especially since we have been practicing for the last 2.5 months.  I did not see any passing or talking or any real physical work on the field.  After beginning the 2nd half, I did see some  improvement. I feel that the players slacked again towards the end of the game. We have 2 practices this week that will allow us time to work with the players and reflect on today’s game. On a different note, I am happy with the performance of the JV team. I know we will work hard to get back on track because I have a lot of faith in this group of kids”, commented Pirate Head Coach Christian Martinez.

Lady Pirates Defeat Creek on Links

The Lady Pirate Golf team matched up with Silver Creek Tuesday evening, defeating them for the third straight time 238 to 244.  Charlestown scores included Andrea McCoy’s 57, Kylan Burke and McKenna Harbin both shot a 60, and Lizzy Hill a 61.

“We improved our team score by 12 strokes from last match.  I am very proud of the improvement I saw today.  The girls are hitting the ball better, and it’s showing in their team scores”, commented Lady Pirate Head Coach Kim Carroll.

Next Match: Tuesday, Aug 21 against Silver Creek and New Washington
