Cochran Signs to Play Basketball with Lyon College

Recently, Charlestown senior Skylar Cochran was joined by family, teammates and coaches to sign her letter of intent to attend school and participate in basketball at Lyon college in the winter.

Located in Batesville, Arkansas, Lyon College is a selective undergraduate liberal arts college located in the foothills of the scenic Ozarks. Founded in 1872, it is one of the oldest colleges in Arkansas. Valued for its small class size, strong student-faculty interactions, and collegial atmosphere, Lyon has forged a singular identity by combining a deep commitment to outstanding liberal arts with a rich community setting. Undergraduates at Lyon can pursue degrees in 15 disciplines as well as pre-professional programs leading to careers in education, law, medicine, physical therapy, and more. Additional programs include the APPLE Project Upward Bound and Upward Bound Math-Science programs for high school students.

Lyon College competes in the American Midwest conference (NAIA Division 1) and is home to many varsity sports including Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country, Football, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, Volleyball, and Men’s and Women’s Wrestling, as well as Co-Ed sports archery, cheerleading, competitive dance, eSports, and Shooting Sports.

Cochran, who has received numerous athletic endeavors in cross country, basketball, and tennis over her career at Charlestown will major in forensic psychology. When asked about her choice to play at Lyon College with the Scots, Cochran said, “I chose Lyon College because the academics and environment are excellent. After arriving on campus it felt like home. I could tell they strive on building relationships with their students and athletes. I’m grateful for the opportunity to play basketball for a top ranked program. Coach Stewart-Lange and coach Church have been very supportive and helpful in the recruiting process. I can’t wait to become a Scot.”

Charlestown basketball coach (and Cochran’s stepfather) shared the following sentiments on Cochran: “Skylar has dedicated a lot to the sports she has participated in and we are appreciative of her efforts for the past four years.  We will miss her here as a Pirate, but wish her the best in this next chapter of her athletic and academic endeavors.”

The Charlestown High School athletic department and WPMQ, The Pirate Network congratulate Skylar and wish her a healthy and prosperous future as a Lyon College Scot.

Baseball

Monday, March 29 at Lanesville W 11-6

Eric Wigginton pitched four innings, recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed no earned runs on just one hit before being relieved by Matthew McCoy due to pitch count restrictions. Nathaniel Kimbrell hit a single, double, and bases loaded triple to collect 5 RBIs

Friday, April 2 vs Henryville W 5-0

Jacob Glover threw a no-hitter through six innings before being relieved by Brandon Broady due to pitch count restrictions. He recorded 12 strikeouts in the contest. The Pirates had six hits, including doubles from Matthew McCoy and Deke Brown. 

The Pirates’ pitchers (Wigginton, McCoy, Glover, and Broady) have combined for 31 strikeouts in the two games this week.

McCoy Inks with Hanover College for Baseball

Yesterday afternoon Charlestown senior Matthew McCoy was joined by family, coaches, and teammates as he signed his celebratory letter of intent to attend school and play baseball at Hanover College next year.

Nestled in 650 acres of a wooded campus and located on the banks of the scenic Ohio River, Hanover College is a private, liberal arts institution where brains and beauty truly intersect. Their rigorous interdisciplinary academic program with 34 majors attracts the best and the brightest from across the region and beyond.

Hanover College competes at the NCAA Division III level in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, including Anderson University, Bluffton University (Ohio), Defiance College (Ohio), Earlham College, Franklin College, Hanover College, Manchester University, Mount St. Joseph University (Ohio), Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology & Transylvania University (Ky.) Hanover is home to twenty varsity sports including men’s and women’s basketball,  cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field, men’s baseball, football and swimming, and women’s softball and volleyball.

When asked about his choice to play at Hanover College with the Panthers, McCoy replied, “Playing baseball at the next level has always been a dream of mine. Hanover gave me a chance to fulfill this dream. Not only does Hanover have a top tier program, but the academics and the environment is outstanding. Coach Bellak has been very helpful with the process of my future and my family and I are truly grateful for that. I look forward to playing for Coach Bellak and being a part of Panther baseball.”

New Charlestown baseball Brian Hester has not yet had the chance to coach McCoy as he is also a basketball player and hasn’t been able to attend pre-season workouts, but he has watched McCoy through the years of Charlestown baseball and had this to say: “Matthew is part of the strong foundation of all the good things about Charlestown baseball. He has the passion, desire, and work ethic to be great not only in baseball but as a member of society. Hanover will not only be gaining a quality baseball player but also an outstanding human being.”

Coach Jay Sorg, a long time hitting coach of McCoy’s, told those in attendance at the signing, “I am so happy for Matthew and his family. This is a great fit. Hanover is getting a great player and better person. I have had the privilege of seeing Matthew grow both on and off the field since he was a young kid. In all those years I believe this off season has been his biggest jump. He is ready to have a huge high school season and impactful college career. Words can not do justice on how proud I am of Matthew.”

Deke Brown Signs to Play Football at Hanover College

Last night while surrounded by family, friends, and coaches, Charlestown senior Deke Brown signed his celebratory letter of intent to attend school and play football at Hanover College in the fall.

Brown, who played linebacker for the Pirates and has etched his name into the record books for as one of the top three tacklers in Charlestown history, will major in secondary education with a focus on history. When asked about his choice to play at Hanover College with the Panthers, Brown replied, “I was impressed by Hanover’s football program and I know I’ll get a great education.”

Charlestown football coach Jason Hawkins told those in attendance at the signing that he expects big things for Brown at Hanover and said, “Deke was incredibly hard working all four years of high school football and he not only got better, but he made those around him better. He never complained about his role, practices, or anything else. He has just came out and went to work. We are very proud of Deke and wish him well as he continues his football and academic career at Hanover College.”

Crowe Signs with Grace College for Volleyball and Track

Recently, Charlestown senior Lanae`Crowe was joined by family and coaches to sign her letter of intent to attend school and participate in both volleyball and track and field at Grace College in the fall.

Located in downtown Winona Lake, Indiana, Grace College is an evangelical Christian college housing six schools: The School of Arts and Sciences, The School of Behavioral Sciences, The School of Business, The School of Education, The School of Ministry Studies, and The School of Professional & Online Education.

Grace College is competes in the Crossroads League at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA Division 1) and is home to nineteen varsity sports including Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Men’s and Women’s Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Men’s and Women’s Golf, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Softball, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, and Volleyball.

Crowe, who recorded over 1,000 assists in volleyball during her career at Charlestown and who won a sectional and placed 5th in the regional in the discus will major in nursing. When asked about her choice to play at Grace College with the Lancers, Crowe said, “I chose Grace College because they are a family based community. They strive on building relationships with students and making sure they feel at home. Playing college volleyball has always been my dream since third grade and I knew I could not pass up that opportunity. Also being a top competitor for track, coming in as a freshman made my decision easier.”

Charlestown volleyball coach Tammy Nuxoll shared the following sentiments on Crowe: “Lanae’ is a very hard worker on and off the court. I know that she will excel in the classroom and will be able to handle being a multi-sport college athlete. Lanae’ is a versatile player that will put in the work it takes to make positive contributions to the volleyball program.”

Charlestown track coach Jerry Doyle added, “It’s great to see Lanae have the opportunity to pursue her dream of being a multi-sport athlete in college! She is one of the hardest workers, and most dedicated athletes that has come through the Track & Field program in my time as a Coach! She works on her own time, year-round , on shot and discus, and has worked hard in the gym to get stronger. I look forward to this season, as well as following her in her college career! No doubt she will be a success in both athletics and academics!
