Pirate Football to Host Corydon in Sectional

The IHSAA conducted its blind draw to determine the Sectional first round match-ups in the annual Indiana HS Football State Tournament Sunday evening.  The Charlestown Pirates, who have played in the Sectional title game in three out of the last four years, will host Corydon to open Class 3A Sectional #30 play on Friday, October 24th.  The remaining Sectional #30 pairing include Mitchell at Brown County, Salem at North Harrison, and Washington at Brownstown.

Band of Pirates Advance to Finals

The Charlestown Band of Pirates got a Gold rating at the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) scholastic preliminaries today (Saturday, October 11th). The band now moves on to the ISSMA finals on October 25th in Indianapolis. Great job Band of Pirates, best of luck next week at State!

Lady Pirate XC 3rd at Sectional, Regional Bound

XCsectional2014Charlestown Lady Pirate Cross Country team is REGIONAL BOUND! The Ladies team finished 3rd, only 8 points out of runner up at today’s Southwestern hosted Sectional meet. Charlestown was led by Katie Rhodes who finished 6th, and Whitney Andrews’ 10th place finish earning them All Sectional Honors. Lady Pirate Alshya Flaget finished 16th, Gabi Gagnon 31st, Erin Kinbrell 32nd, Molly Sumner 54th, and Isabella Golja 57th. “I am so proud of the effort today! They had a goal of beating Southwestern (who won the New Washington Invite over us) and Madison, and the girls achieved both of those goals today! We knew if we could finish in front of them, that we would make it to Regional”, commented Coach Jerry Doyle. The Pirate boys team recorded a notable and Regional qualifying performance from Seth Parker; who finished 19th. Parker returns to the Regional round for the second straight year! “I told him that he knew what he had to do, and he went out and left nothing on the course”, concluded Coach Doyle.

CBDL Hosting a Coaches Clinic October 22nd

The Charlestown Basketball Developmental League (CBDL) will host a FREE Basketball Coaching Clinic on Wednesday, October 22nd, from 6-830 PM, at the Charlestown High School.  This purpose of this clinic is to help develop all of the basketball players among our community teams ; Schools (Elementary, Middle, High), CBDL, Travel Teams (CYP, CYLP) and our players that are in AAU programs.

Organizers are encouraging all current coaches to attend (all levels), with an open invitation to anyone that might be interested to coach down the line.  This may be an opportunity for some prospective coaches to learn a little bit more before they jump into coaching the game, especially if they are sitting on the fence.  This coaching clinic will include on-court demonstrations with local players; while performing some of the drills and skills that many of our current coaches use.  Diagrams for participants to take notes on along with time for questions and answers will coaches will be made available.  Currently all high school and middle school coaches have been asked to lead the before mentioned demonstrations, and Coach Gilbert will be conducting a presentation at the clinic.

Rhodes Wins at Providence, Lady Pirates 3rd

ProvidenceInvitXC2014The Charlestown HS Cross Country team ran at New Albany’s Community Park Tuesday evening, in the annual Providence Invitational.  Frosh Katie Rhodes led the Lady Pirates and was the individual girls champion; for her second win of the year!  Senior Whitney Andrews ran 4th and Gabi Gagnon 13th to round out the Lady Pirate medal winners!  The Lady Pirates placed 3rd as a team; even without their #3 runner Alysha Flaget, who was under the weather.  “Had Alysha been available it would have definitely been a different (team) outcome, but we want her ready for sectional on Saturday” commented Coach Jerry Doyle.  The Pirate Cross Country team was led by Seth Parker, who medaled by placing 13th during the race.  “I’m looking forward to Sectional and qualifying for another Regional as a team”, concluded Coach Doyle after Tuesday’s outing.

Fall Sport Sectional Information

Pirate Nation several fall sports are preparing for Sectional play, and so should you….here the 411 you need to know.  Boys Tennis and Girls Golf Sectional play has ended, and unfortunately Charlestown teams did not advance.

Pirate Soccer will be begin Sectional #27 play at Columbus East High School on Wednesday, October 8th versus Scottsburg with a 5:30 pm start.

Lady Pirate Soccer will begin Sectional #27 play at Columbus North High School on Thursday, October 9th (7:00 pm start) versus the winner of tonight’s Scottsburg/Coumbus East winner.

Pirate & Lady Pirate Cross Country will compete in Sectional #28 in Hanover (hosted by Southwestern HS) on Saturday, October 11th beginning at 10:30 am.

Pirate Football will compete in Class 3A Sectional #31 beginning Friday, October 24th.  The blind draw for the eight team sectional will be announced on Sunday, October 12th, beginning at 7:00 pm.

Lady Pirate Volleyball will host the Class 3A Sectional #30 beginning on Tuesday, October 21st in the CHS Sports Arena.  The blind draw for the eight team sectional will be announced on Monday, October 13th, beginning at 8:00 am.
